The visuals are fantastic in this game. There was some inconsistency in the pixel art styles but understandable! The gameplay kind of reminded me of a top down legend of zelda game. The lantern mechanic was interesting, but felt a little sluggish at times. I also found some buggy collision detection. But overall, nice work!

I streamed it here for more thoughts of the game!

Developer(+1)

Just watched your stream. Thanks for playing our game, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback. The take on less is more was that when there was less light you could see more of whats alive in the garden :-)

That makes sense now! Thanks for clarifying that!

Absolutely love it! The art is really good and the neon bloom with the music really make the atmosphere. I also like how you can slightly pull the statues if you mess up.

Developer

Thank you! Was super great to make the music for this, felt very inspired by the artwork from my fellow Sam

Love this idea! I included it in my Blackthornprod GAME JAM #3 compilation video series!

Developer

Thanks so much for playing and commenting! Sorry you had to pull that gargoyle around the whole time... seems that feature was maybe a bit confusing. You can push them haha!

Alright buddy, so this game is great.

I really liked the way you created the visuals and music/SFX for this game - I did that as well. I think the puzzles are good, I like the mechanic. I think the movement of the player might be a little too slow, but that would be the ONLY thing I'd change, everything else is great.

I'd love to see this game expanded.

I would be glad if you take 5 minutes to review my game bro, I think I did well as well, (but not as good as you btw ;) )
Cheers!

Thanks for your kind review, we have Sam and Sam our Composer and Artist to thank for how amazing the graphic and sound design turned out. We will check out your game for sure!

I love how this is Phrased lol Sam and Sam

Very simple game, but I really liked the art, especially when the lights are out. Well done!

Good puzzle design maybe too easy and it justy lacks mechanics and variety but thats fine for jam game. Sound and visual designing was very good and fishes on dark were so amazing,

I also streamed your game on my twitch https://www.twitch.tv/tipu_real you can watch it afterwards if you want.

Developer

I watched your stream. It's great to see other peoples play styles and hear their commentar. Thanks for checking it out and for streaming The Night Keeper!

so stoked to hear this reference - I’m a huge ghibli fan

One of my inspirations when we were brainstorming ideas and fleshing out the night keeper was the feeling I get when they are exploring the abandoned city in Laputa. We wanted to capture that sense of wonder and mystery. So it's really nice to hear that some of it shines through!

This was a nice and relaxing experience. Great job!

Really good work dudes. Interestic puzzles, original atmosphere that combines perfectly with beautifull art and  music, everithing is amazingly polished. I really like this following statues for avoiding gameplay blockades, very clever solution. Fantastic overall mates, amazing work!!

If you could check my game it would be an honour for me.

Developer

Aw man, thanks so much for these kind words. Going to check out your game right now.

Awesome little game, loved it :D

The music and the visuals fit perfectly with each other: slightly gloomy yet peaceful. Bonus points for glowing frogs !

As for the puzzles, they were simple but very enjoyable, and also fit well in the overall experience. The heavy contrast between the puzzle elements and the rest of the visuals also helps a lot in bringing them forward, while being nicely tied to the lantern mechanic.

I think there's a pretty nice opportunity to push the concept further along the line, this is a great stepping stone !

Cheers and well done !

Super cool game! Congrats !!

I loved all the little details you put into the game :) The ambiance, the fishes and frogs moving around, the animation when you reach the light ..

This all makes for a very complete and polished experience.

Cheers, loved it :)

Congratulation you make a great game. Detail:

+ Ambience : This is the strength of your game
+ Music reminds me of Zelda, it fit perfectly with the game
+ Arts: Spectral animals adds a lot to the ambience
+ Un-stuckable statues

- 1st level : Some hint that the statue can be move (like a shake/blink) will be welcome.
- Repetitive: need some variety. (For instance: use 2 statues, first open the path for the second, and then the second open the path for the first. And other things like that...)

Well done !

I love the animals when you turn off the lantern!

great job

This was very nice and also a great concept! I got stuck fairly fast though! But find my gameplay footage below: 1:26:34 The Night Keeper

Hey Bastian.

Firstly I wanna say thanks for including our entry in your review video on youtube! It was so great to watch someone else play and see what you liked and didn't like in real time!

Secondly, I'm going to tell you what you missed on the lake level and I think you're gunna kick yourself. On level 1 & 2 when you placed the statue on the glowing mark it locked into place. But on level 3 the first statue did not lock after you placed it on the yellow fish. Once the bridge is raised you have access to the second yellow fish and you can push the first statue onto it and then it locks and raises the bridge that gives you access to the glowing blue mark! The link is that the one statue is responsible for both yellow marks ;-)

KBoss did a full walkthrough of the Night Keeper if you want to see what I mean or check out what you missed in the remaining 2 levels. But I'd love it if you went back and gave it another try   😂

Oh wow that is how it worked lol!

The atmosphere was really nice, i loved the music and sound effects ! I loved how the statues were moving a bit towards you, it adds something to the game. The fact to be able to walk through walls and trees was a bit strange, or at least their implementation.

Very good job guys ! Keep going !

I loved the atmosphere and the music, the gameplay was absolutely beautiful and peaceful. I got confused with the statues though, the following thing made me feel like they were enemies and I had to avoid them initially. Would love to play more levels, great job 10/10

Developer

hmmm this is a good point about the statues - we wanted it to be mysterious but we don’t want players to deliberately avoid them! Thanks for your feedback, really glad you liked game.

Submitted(+1)

I like the atmosphere the music fits really well. My only concern is the character really breaks the immersion of the game. I suggest you to make a bigger sprite rather than scale it up.

Developer

Thank you! It was so much fun to create the music for this, I found the visuals really inspiring.

Submitted(+1)

The atmosphere, music and gameplay were nice. I really like the way you use darkness for your theme. I only have two real critiques:

  1. the artwork doesn't feel consistent on some things like the trees in particular.
  2. the follow distance on the statues is super tiny. Now it's also on me for not wanting to touch them until I got cornered at the first fish but I had assumed that being touched by them was bad.

I do like everything else and can see the game expanding from that if you added harder puzzles.

This theme was a hard one and I feel like by taking away your "sight" you were providing the less and the more was in the hints you provided by doing so?

Either way I enjoyed that experience and that's what games are supposed to be, experiences. Your team did good and I hope to see you guys do more in the future :)

Developer

Thanks for playing and leaving feedback! I hope you'll consider rating our game!

Submitted(+1)

I did. I just resaved them to be sure, but i was pretty certain I had rated already.

:)

Developer

It went up by 1 so thanks for taking the effort!

Submitted(+2)

I'm not so sure why the statues are kept being attracted by me but that really turned out great when i did a silly mistake, the art is amazing and love the animals that show only in dark, but in terms of gameplay i don't see why you should move if you have the lantern off because you can't see a thing so i would probably just make him stationary, apart form that great game, you really are a great team.

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the great feedback! I love your game so much, I was playing a ton of it yesterday.

At one point during development we discussed whether we should add a "pull" mechanic to the game. We were running out of time and instead decided to make the statues "creep" toward you. It felt like the right choice because it makes the statues a bit more eerie. This is definitely not a perfect solution and is one of the first mechanics we'll revisit if we make updates to the game.

For being able to move in the dark, that's definitely a good point. From our testing it seemed to depend on a person's play styles. I watched some turn the lights out and move in the dark (remembering where they were) and others only move in the light while checking for clues in the dark.
