I cant tell you how upset I was to load the game to find maths! :P Honestly I got kinda confused by the premise at first, but I did manage to do a few once I understood.  What I liked was that it was challenging enough to give it a few gos and it let you retry the levels  when you failed, plus the timer and music worked together to make it more intense.

My brain hurts now! Also quite funny for a review video as you can see how bad I am at Math lol

31:10 Is video review!

Developer(+1)

Aw, thanks for the time you spent! I'll go watch the review!

Really interesting game! The transitions were a bit slow, and the sound effect on them was a bit annoying, but the music elsewhere was great! The game was fun (albeit a bit too challenging for my tastes), and it really gives off a hectic vibe in a nice way. I loved the visuals of being in a notebook!

Developer(+1)

I'll fix the speed, I swear XD also.. Really? That SFX is sooooooooo satisfying for me, the page flip. But I could do some sort of volume to turn it off. I'm glad you enjoyed the game, and liked the idea nontheless! Also, you're one of the few people who actually like the music!

Submitted(+1)

Really cool and original take on the theme! Pushing it further into a WarioWare type of game sounds genius. The music was sooo stressful!

I thought the transitions were too slow and the difficulty curve far too steep. Maybe start with just classic math problems without the gimmick to warm up the player?

Developer(+1)

Transitions are slow, that's a common complaint, although it should be a quick fix! I'll see if some normal math problem can fit, thanks for the advice! Glad you liked the rest, and the idea! With this game I'm relying much on the originality of the take on the theme and the idea.

It reminded me of Wario Ware but with Maths haha quirky and fun i liked it

Thank you so much!

You've managed to make me as stressed as I would be during an actual math test which I hope is what you were going for lol. I'm personally not a fan of math puzzles, so it didn't resonate too much with me, though regardless of that I think it's a really original take on the theme out of everything I've played so far :)

Echoing the feedback so far, the time constraint is really tight, even if that's by design. One thing I'd do is maybe start with more time, and try to adjust it to the player's performance? Like if the player succeeds in less than 10 seconds the max timer is reduced by 10 seconds, and if they're taking a long time next timer is extended. But I hear you if you're in a "the stress and frustration is supposed to be part of the experience" mindset

I didn't read the page description before playing the game and was a bit confused to be thrown into the action just like that, I find it always useful and good QoL to have an in-game tutorial, although obviously it's not always possible due to jam constraints. Bringing this up just in case

Developer

Nonono, you've got it wrong. I think the stress IS supposed to be part of the experience, but not the frustration. Also, as another commenter suggested, I think I'm going to replace the limit with a score system so that I can get the most possible stress with the least possible frustration.

I would have loved to make a little introductory tutorial (as well as a volume slider) but I couldn't.. I tried kinda replacing it with a very easy, "I teach you the mechanics" kinda level, with X > 0, and 0 is 7.  Hope you liked it nontheless! One of the main goals was to have an original take on the theme, sooo.. I can say I'm happy!

AWESOME! the gameplay is very unique!

Thank you so much!

Damn, I enjoyed this a lot. Very innovative. The main menu was really cool, too, looks well polished. Well done :)

Developer

Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked it!

I understood the concept. It was a great game and the tension of running out of time was always there due to the music and sound. I do think some problems weren't giving the right answer. But honestly, the art and Background music kept the game up. Thanks for a great game!

Please consider playing and rating my game as well. I would really appreciate it!

Developer(+1)

It could be the case, I made the majority of the levels on the last 2 days and I only playtested myself (unfortunately), if you tell me the levels and the supposed results I can fix it after the jam! I'm glad you liked my music cacophony, and the art, though!

As soon as I have a bit of time I'll rate your game, too!

Is this Asian reference?
lol   can only clear lvl.1.
I'm too bad at math   but the game is ok.
Music is far too loud while you need concentrate and It keep distracting XD

Developer

No, it isn't an Asian reference XD

I really wanted to make a Volume slider (as I'm perfectly concious my music are loud and usually discordant), but I didn't have the time :(

Glad you enjoyed it nontheless!

Very creative idea and a brilliant fit for the theme! To approach the theme with a game where literally 'less is more' is brilliant haha.

I enjoyed the maths puzzles, I think maybe I could have done without time running out during an attempt though? Sometimes I was just trying to figure out what was being asked before I could answer and time ran out. Maybe this could be modified so that you get more points the faster you answer and there's no time limit for answering a question? So the points you earn go down the longer you take which still makes people hurry and panic, without essentially saying 'you lose'.

Honestly though a brilliant idea and the tune is going to be stuck in my head for quite a while lol. Interesting art style too to have the game actually take place within a maths book, you're clearly a very creative person! Nice work :)

Developer(+1)

I'm really glad you liked the idea, I'm shaking! Thanks!

I wanted to put the timer to make a sense of urgency, but a score system would have been better, you're right! I tought that since there wasn't any real penalty for "losing", it wouldn't feel so bad, but I get the sense of "aww, I lost". Definetly a change I'll make at the end of the jam!

I'm glad you liked the "math book" artstyle (it IS my math copybook, after all) and the idea, thanks!

Submitted(+1)

Very fun game! I really love the visual, fit perfectly with the game. The gameplay is simple but very challenging and satisfying. Very creative and unique take on the theme, overall I think this is a really nice game! Well done!

Developer

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!

Cool game! I suck at maths so I couldnt get far but I really like the visual style of the text on paper. Obviously fits the theme in more ways than one haha, well done!

Developer

I already rated  your game and everything but I didn't want to leave your comment without a reply, so... THANKS!

Warning: Be careful before playing this game as you can get a serious heart attack.

But anyway, I had a lot of fun playing it :P what a simple, but wise idea.

Theme:

Oh that's probably my favourite theme idea on this jam by now. Literal, simple, but very well developed and fun.

Visuals:

You can't call it a AAA game, but visuals are very well paired with the climate of the game.

Actually for the first time, I have no idea what to advice, as I have no idea at all what could fit the style :P Just one simple thing that got me confused was the 'power' sign. I was almost sure that in writing form it's '^', so I didn't really know for several rounds what I was supposed to do, but when I indentified this little dot, I could play further.

Innovation:

Definitely it's innovative. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it would be the type of game that you could work on to publish on steam, but I might be mistaken and if you make me wrong, I will buy it (unless you put a ridiculous price for that xD)

SFX:

Sounds are really good. As for music I really enjoyed it, but it would be good if you worked on blending a bit, so that it loops well. You really got me with speeding up pace on Play, that was amazing!

Gameplay:

It's a lot of fun, even if those equations are very simple, they are really intense xD (I've studied IT, so I had a lot of maths out there and still struggled a bit with this time pressure). I've got stuck on one with X + Y . I'm pretty sure I've solved it well (tried several different possibilities), but I couldnt get to the next one, so I might have missed something. But it was fun nevertheless :P

Great entry, my first impression was rather mediocrate, but you positively surprised me and it's one of the nicest entries I've played. Great Job!

PS: And sorry for so little constructive feedback, I really don't know what to advice for the first time :P

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

I think it's normal not knowing what to advice, it's pretty far away from the standard idea of a "game".

For the graphics I tried going for a "drawn on the copybook" kinda vibe, I would have loved to draw and scan all of the assets, but I didn't have the time :(  I managed to put in a photo of my copybook as the background, to sell the idea.

I don't think it's a Steam kind of game, and it isn't meant to be, BUT if I had to find it a spot in the world, it might be a free resource for middle school teachers to teach basic equations with X and Y to students in a "gamey" and interactive kind of way.

I definetly have to improve my musical skills, I promise I'll try blending it nicer next time!

Tell me the one you think you solved, and what were your results, because I might have rushed and not have found all the possibilities! It happened in the past with another level I ended up scrapping, nothing new!

I'm really glad you were positively impressed, I'm shaking! And (as I once read on a YT comment somewhere) thanks for the internet-triggered dopamine! <3

(P.S.: Also I'm from Italy, so maybe we write the "power" in a different manner, I didn't want to just make it a smaller X or an * though)

(+1)

Ciao! (I'm not Italian, but trying xD)

I really enjoy your idea with free educational resource, it's truly amazing!

As for equation it was something like X + Y - 5 = 6 or sth like that. So I did try several situations: mostly setting Y with the same value as -5 to make them reduce to 0 and then X to 6. So for instance 6 - 5 + 5 = 6

Maybe in Poland we write "power" in a different way too, have no idea :P If you ever want a multicultural version, you can study how this thing is called in other cultures :P and make a choice in a menu, so that people can choose the one they want :P

I'm glad you could have some dopamine from me, it's good to smile a lot in life :)

Developer(+1)

It should be X =6 and Y = 5 in that level, I think.. I'll replay it, maybe I broke something!

After the jam ends, it could be cool to make a little of a language menu, thanks for the advice!

I hope you have a good day! Ciao!

Submitted(+1)

Fun idea! ^^

Thank you so much!

Great game! Love the UI style, and that intense feeling! Sometimes it could get confusing lol, Only thing is,in the credits, the button Menu could have a different colour to differentiate it! Other than that its awesome! Please do try my game as well :d

Developer(+1)

I'll definetly change the button color! Thanks for pointing out!

Submitted

Np, also would be glad if you could check my game! Thanks

Submitted(+1)

The music was a little overwhelming and discordant, but I think that may have been what you were going for. I definitely got test vibes and felt the time crunch. Well done!

Developer

I swear I'll learn how to compose passable music.. eventually.. I'm glad you liked it nontheless! I'll play and rate your game, too!

Submitted(+1)

Fun idea. Needless to say, I could even see it turning into an educational game. I also like what you did with the art style.

Developer

Thanks! I really wanted to make more levels, but it is what it is, I had to scrap about 5 or 6 of them due to logical problems or the inability to have a y = (x-2) answer in my code (I hate strings why did I use them). Really glad you liked it!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, this is awesome. A really unique take on the theme! The music makes it really intense and the puzzles stay hard and fun! It reminds me a bit of the concept behind Baba Is You. Well Done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! The name and type of puzzle sound very similar to Baba is You (which I really like!), but since the take of the game on the theme, didn't have any ideas on how to remove the similarity.. I'll just roll with it, I guess!

Submitted(+1)

I would appreciate any feedback on my game if possible :)

Developer(+1)

Obviusly! In Italy (where I live) is almost lunchtime so I gotta eat, but I'll play your game as soon as I can!

Thanks! Enjoy your meal!
