This was cool! The music and the premise was fun. I always find these kind of games kinda difficult to balance right because the higher dmg is always just more fun. I dont know if theres a fun benefit to doing the more defensive version or the one where you turn into a rock. Ultimately you are still playing the game the same way  but one way drags it out a lot and the other way makes it more fun which dont feel much like option, maybe if the different lvls had different powers to use? Either way, I think overall the core gameplay is solid and its a fun experience with the red version :)

edit: also, the sounds and music are amazing for sure

This was a very cool concept for the theme!

Theme:

Use the mouse wheel to quickly switch between giving up attack for defense or vice versa. Not entirely original for use of theme, but the way you implemented it was! switching between both states on the fly was fun and engaging .

Visuals:

The level designs looked nice and clean, which was good because the slime trail the player leaves and the blood of your enemies leaves a nasty mess everywhere.. It is a very colorful and vibrant game which looks pretty amazing! The visual changes that occur between strong defense and strong attack is also very noticeable and works so well with the game mechanic!! I was a fan of going full attack though myself!

Innovation:

The concept of trading one stat for another was entirely original, but the way everything was implemented was  very sleek. The  scroll of the mouse wheel and you could super strong, or a flick in the opposite direction and your were like fort knox! Implementation was innovative!

Sounds/Music:

The game had solid sound effects and pretty bopping music.. There was a variety  in the music, but I think it would have been awesome when you switched between  having a strong attack or more defense the music would change accordingly!

Overall:

I had a lot fun of playing this! I just kind of zoned out and kept playing through. This was solid all the way through. The only major thing that felt weird to me was the character and enemy designs. I would have liked to know some type of backstory to know why we were playing as a blob killing blob bunnies and snails lol Totally worth the check out!

I streamed it here, starts at minute 47:

Thanks for the detailed feedback and also including a video it means a lot to me :D

The characters are animals who have been experimented on so they became monsters. Our character was an animal as well but the scientists kept on experimenting on it until it became a blob.

Thanks for playing :D

That's a pretty cool story!

The premise of this game is cool, less defense = more attack, but sadly it isn't balanced: having more attack is always a better option than having more defense (defence is only usefull with the explosive bird imo) for one simple reason: increasing the attack also increases your speed, and having more speed means dodging attacks/escaping enemies more eastly, thus taking overall less damage, while on the other hand if you increase defense your speed also drops making it harder to escape/dodging enemies thus taking  overall more damage

Another things is the corpses: there were some times where i wanted to shoot at an enemy behind a corpse and the corpse was basically a meat shield for the enemy. Also the corpses can be easily mistaken for an alive enemy from far away (especially when you have low health), and when there is a bunch of enemies in the room is really hard to see who is alive and who is not without getting too close (but in doing that you put yourself at risk of taking damage, and when you have 1/2 of defense that's a huge risk that usually isn't worth doing)

Overall this is a great game!! Good Job!!

Thanks for the feedback :D

I couldnt playtest the game becouse of the time constraits. I agree that playing defence is worse compared to offence. I am working on a post jam version and will fix these issues.

I wanted corpses to be an obstacle while making them but i can see how it can be annoying to deal with them i will update the corpse sprites so it will be clear to the player :)

Thank you for playing :D

This game was pretty fun, but as I looked at the screenshots after finishing the game.. I realized I was missing much of the core game mechanics. I knew the numbers and color bar at the top of the screen was supposed to have meaning, but I couldn't figure it out while playing. So, I beat the game in my base form, hahaha. There must have been instructions in-game that I must have sped by.

So, the controls were very responsive, and the movement felt buttery smooth. The art was also appealing in a way, even though the background felt like it had a different style from the player and enemies. The bookshelves and desk reminded me of Pokemon for some reason.

The music and sounds were great, but maybe the background music could have changed every 3 floors or so, that would have keep the experience fresh.

So, the only problem I would say is, for players like me, make the intended game mechanic clear as day, otherwise we will jump right into the game and miss the most important parts.

Well done!

Thanks for the feedback :D

Instructions were written in the tutorial levels floor but i can see how someone can miss that i will be careful about that next time :)

As for the similarities to pokemon is I was playing soul silver and i liked how the tables looked like so i used them as a reference when drawing my tables :d

I wanted to add each floor its own music  but there was no time left :/ (That is why there is a tutorial level music :D)

I am glad that you have played and gave feedback to my game. Thanks for playing  :)

Great game! I really liked the graphics and all of the little bits of polish added up for a well-tuned experience (eg the trail, the little elevator animations, the scene-transition etc...)  Also, the music worked really well! Sometimes when you were firing backwards you couldn't see your bullet because it blended in with the trail, so maybe just a slightly different colour for the bullet might have been nice: that's a really minor thing though... like really minor in such a good game! Overall, I really enjoyed playing!

Well done on managing to create so much content for your game in such a short space of time! To do all the art work and music and then go on to create as many levels as you did was great, I was pleasantly surprised with how much there was to play through. Nice design choice for the different enemies too, Initially I didn't think I would have any reason to not use higher attack, but then the enemies you threw at me made me realise how important both were and I frequently switched depending on the situation. Very nice implementation and the music was great, I got into it straight away haha.

Nice job :)

Really cool game with a lot of polish that went in, love all the little touches like the heartbeat effect when you're angry / low life, the slime trails everywhere, and how the enemies will go after you if you attack them outside of their vision radius. The explosive birds are also a great design idea, and when you started mixing all the mechanics together it's where the game really started picking up steam for me.

The only 2 critics I have is that 1 - I think I realized the snail enemies protected themselves only for the final level, before that I was kind of like "hmm this is buggy". So making it clearer with either a more visible animation or a color change would've helped a lot and 2 - I think the main character doesn't have a lot of personality compared to say, the birds or the rabbits? It's pretty much a blob that's spiky or blocky, and I think you really have something cool you can play with here considering the defense mechanics.

I'd love to see a version where you have more variety / powerups for your own attacks too, but considering the time you had, I'm impressed you managed to make something so coherent all by yourself. Kudos to you! Really cool game :)

Thanks for the detailed feedback :D

I agree that snails need a visual indicator when their defence increases it was in my mind but i forgot to implement it :/ To be honest the player sprites that im using were just placeholders that i made when planning the game. B ecouse of time constraits i couldnt redesign the player.

I will definetly work on this thanks for playing :D

This game was just amazing. The enemy variety combined with the art was great. Everything was complemented by the music. Then there were some extra things like the Snail hiding in the shell if we got too much near them and the sprite of the main character changing with how much attack or defense we had. Really really great game. It just shows how much hard work was put into it. Thanks for such an amazing game!!

Please consider playing and rating my game as well. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!!

I love the use of the jam theme, prety solid and useful. I like the artwort it has a lot of personality and the use of red or green for the enemies combines perfectly with the mechanic. As only complaint there is a room ther that gum rabbits are too near from the player so they blocked and it seems a bit unfair. Anyways, very good job, I really enjoyed it!

Very polished this one, a solid experience through and through. One of the most enjoyable implementations of the theme - swapping between the different states has a really satisfying flow to it, one second turtling up to defend against a barrage of attacks, the next cranking your damage up for a full out assault. The visual feedback for it was very well executed too, having unique sprites for each state, and a very easy to read green to red colour gradient, which also carries over into the enemy design.

I only really had a couple of minor issues with the shooting - the slime trails look awesome, but because they're roughly the same colour as the projectiles, I had a hard time seeing them once I'd been moving around for a bit, and the floow was getting covered. I think this game would also really benefit from a custom cursor - I kept getting my tiny white arrow lost against the floor tiles, whereas a nice, meaty crosshair would really fit in with the aesthetic, and give the player a better idea of where they're shooting.

This is one of my favourites that I've played so far, very nicely done!

Thanks for the detalied feedback i aggre with you  how it can be hard seeing the cursor definetly will work on that.  I am currently working on the colors so that is done :d I am glad you had fun with my game :D

Very cool mechanic in my opinion but i got scared whenever i turned him red.I also didnt die fast with the full red slime and i like the particles on the ground but not to much of them overall it was a good game jam submission great job.

Your game blew my expectations out of the water my guy! The subtle trails of goo or whatever and the mixture of enemies kept the gameplay intresting. The mechanic of choosing more defense or offense was really cool and put to good use throughout the game. There is a lot of polish on this game and it shows. Great job!

very cool game! i liked the scrollwheel mechanic, that was a very cool implementation of the theme and a game mechanic at the same time! the only thing that i would change, is the shot sprite, when it's yellow it's almost invisible
