Game Title
Bilge Junction

Developer Name
Bilge Rats

Short Promo Blurb
A surreal real-time survival game addressing climate impact and community action in Alaska.

Full Description
My body burned in the cold,

until I felt nothing.

When I opened my eyes,

I was back where I started...

Welcome to Bilge Junction, population 8: a dying town on the arctic highway. With the promise of a cheap roof over your head, you ran from your problems and wound up here.

But winter's setting in, and the fire keeps burning. A storm is on its way. There's something lurking in the pipeline that built the town.

Enter a world with a life of its own. Survive, explore, earn the townsfolks' respect, and discover what lies beneath the surface of Bilge Junction.

And whatever you do, don't let the fire go out.

Artistic Statement / Use of Theme(s)
BILGE JUNCTION drives players to CHANGE THE STORY. The game reckons with the colonial past, turbulent present, and bleak future of Alaska, taking inspiration from lived experience and making it accessible through a pop lens.

BILGE JUNCTION seeks to impress upon the player that they live in a living, breathing world for which they are personally responsible, that the world exists beyond their home, and that meaningful action works both on and beyond the individual level. We hope to raise awareness of the real climate disasters facing Arctic and sub-Arctic regions and drive players to question themselves in an accessible way, counteracting disinformation, ignorance, inaction, and the diffusion of responsibility.

Development Summary
Our team of 5 was able to meet most of what we had wanted in our initial concept. We had a few really compelling quest ideas we had to cut, as well as some characters and locations.

The most difficult hurdles in the project were version control and Unreal bugs and some scattershot availability issues. Surprisingly, optimization went smoothly during production, although character behavior and the real-time system could lead to obscure bugs.

The team credits early work, unified direction, consistent meetings and troubleshooting, and dedicated team members as high points of the project.

Release Plan
The current version of BILGE JUNCTION represents a polished releasable MVP version, including all three days of the narrative sequence and relevant events and gameplay for each day.

We'd like to do additional bug testing playtesting, dialogue, animations, characters, locations, audio, cutscenes, special events, and objectives if we were to work on the game further in the future, but we're content with what we have in the current release.

Really love the artstyle of this game with the 2d models in a 3d space. I also enjoy the writing of the characters and the dialogue system. The controls of the player feel nice and fluid, and the animations along with it are great, though the walking animation seems to be scaled slightly bigger than the idle animations. The player's size overall is also slightly too big I think. I ended up getting pretty lost trying to understand what to do with the resources I was picking up with the fuel depleting, so maybe making the objective slightly more clear from the start would help. Adding a titlescreen and other menu UI would bring the game together polish-wise. the sound design is also great!

I enjoyed the blend of 2D and 3D elements in your game, and the animations fit the game nicely. I found the snowy environment atmospheric, though at times it was challenging to navigate in the dark, which caused me to get easily lost even with the flashlight on. It could be helpful to have clearer guidance or objectives on what actions advance the game or clear what progress has been made other than picking up logs. The game was a bit heavy on my computer, which made it difficult to run smoothly. Adding a pause menu could be a great thing to add so players can restart if needed. A brief tutorial or explanation of the objectives might also help the game and clarity! Overall, the game has a fantastic concept, and I loved the environment and narrative you created in such a short time. Great work!

I like the 2D characters with 3D backgrounds. Seems like you put a lot of work into the story, but I also feel like it could have been fleshed out a bit more (more emphasis on the point of the story). Some of the textures made me feel a bit dizzy (the repeating and glow effects), and when it was dark it was to see without a map. Would be interested to see if you all chose to continue developing the game, where it goes from here.

Posting this from Discord: This game was super cool to play through, and also incredibly ambitious at that. I loved the 2D composited style, and was super impressed to see the game open with a whole cutscene. I thought the narrative was really cool, and the interactions with Kat and being able to act as an eldritch being. Very well done!

This is devastatingly lonely and really well done. The atmosphere and artstyle feel fittingly lonely, and I liked observing the town as I played. The climate of the region and how the characters live within it feels very real, and the way you present this game is unique and fresh. It's environmental without having to place values on the environment itself, if that makes sense. A few bugs prevented me from completing the game, but I'd really love to take a good chunk of time to finish it in the near future.

I really love the direction you went in here, and it's really impressive what you've managed to achieve! You've made a lot of really smart choices with the visual and sound design, and it comes together into a really cohesive and atmospheric whole. The 2d characters on 3d backgrounds works really well, the sounds effects as you run around collecting wood are fun, the music and the pipe noises are the perfect type of creepy, the dialogue manages to pack a strong storytelling punch in a fairly small word-count (and I really liked how game control prompts were "disguised" in text), and the simple mechanics of managing your body and fire heat give purpose while setting the scene. I agree with you that the current version is already a polished and releasable product (more than a "minimum viable" one in my estimation), but would love to see the additions you've suggested and then a price tag on it.

In terms of your itchio page, your trailer and promo images capture the vibe of the game very well—and as a consumer, if I stumbled across the them on steam I would be inclined to buy the game!—so it'd be great to see a banner and background added to reinforce the overall visuals.

In case it'd be useful, here are the bugs I encountered while playing.

  • I accidentally clicked on Kat a few times after talking to her for the first time, and the game stopped letting me interact with anything or move, and I had to reboot it
  • Upon reloading it wouldn't let me select any dialogue options with Red-Eye and I couldn't back out of the dialogue, so I had to reload again
  • On reloading this time, it displayed Red-Eye's name as "NPC" for a few bits of his dialogue
  • The game crashed just after the credits, so I'm not sure if we find out what's in the pipe

Really nice game. I like the character design and the sound effect when walking . I did notice tiling issues on your landscape texture . You can  a distance blend with  far  texture that is less detailed and near texture that is more detailed and you plug to the texture sample uv this will help with the tiling .

One tool that i recomend using for langscape is gaea . It is free landscaping tool that can easily generate 3d landscape along with the different layer allowing unreal to blend the texutre really well

Really cool game! The surreal feeling comes across very nicely with weirdly proportioned objects and paper-like characters (a very cool art direction). I like the story quite a lot, and it feels really enticing. However, I did run into a few bugs here and there with the dialogue boxes (sometimes I could get stuck, not being able to select any dialogue options if I don't finish the dialogue before the cutscene ends). The body heat and fuel stats are a pretty cool mechanic, but I feel like more interesting interactions could be done with that. Other than that, a solid entry!

I’m sorry that I couldn’t play your game because I don’t have a Windows computer. However, I really enjoyed the dashboard and promotional video you created for the game. Especially the video, where the unsettling music and editing style gave me a sense that there are many hidden secrets in the town and a conspiracy buried within. The screenshots and promotional video made me very curious about what’s hidden in the town. (Take my money,Plz :))As a suggestion, if the characters and scenes in the game could have a unified style, I believe it would greatly enhance the immersion in the game. Nice work!!!

Aesthetics and overall tone of this game are very well done and feel cohesive. I instantly felt a connection to the locale and mood of the story.

Mechanics could be more fleshed out, wondering if you can collect more than just wood at some point. Would love to see this game worked on in the future. :)
