Theme incorporation
I incorporated three of the themes, first Solitude : Your character is alone in a strange ruined world, there is no npc to talk to, only hostile creatures, you also have no party members like in many Dungeon Crawlers, here your are all alone.

The theme Cosmic Horror has been integrated in two ways, first you have a mind bar, used to cast magic, but it also serve as a sanity meter, if it deplete your character will start to see strange creatures. If it hit 0 you will turn insane and die quickly.
The boss and creatures of the cosmic ruins are also pretty lovecraftian in appearance, and will try to turn your
character insane by devouring his psyche.

The theme Ruins was incorporated in terms of general feel, you are exploring a world in decay, futhermore the cosmic ruins, are well, ruins. Lathria's Dungeon area is also pretty much a ruin too.

My laptop sucks too  much to run this game (Seriously, it's a genuine slideshow for me), which is really unfortunate cause I was really interested in playing this one (Obviously not gonna rate it since I literally can't play it).

I will say tho, the art style looks really nice imo. As I'm familiar with the MV RTP, I tell a lot of it is heavy edits of it, and it's done really well. Nice music at the start too. I just wish I could comment on the game itself.

Edit: It does run on my phone, but that method doesn't really help since it wasn't designed for that and I can't move (I can open the menu, since MV has a way of doing that by default, but that's it).

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you liked the art style even if you were unable to play. I will try to post a downloadable updated version post jam, maybe it will work better on your computer !
Oh and yes the game doesn't work on phone 😬

"And so [I] left"

The game was fun. The visuals are very pleasant, you managed to give a common coherent style to  the two different packs and I probably like the 3D part more than when it's not black & white. The tunes are nice. I like that the game is not too easy, I needed to apprehend a few things, such as which order to deal with the different areas seemed like the most natural one, and restarted a couple of times before finally playing a real run to the end. Several areas you can deal with in any order but whose difficulty does not have to be equal is my favourite kind of structure so I really like this one. I like the orthogonal power of the different pieces of equipment which can all be bad or good depending on what enemies you're fighting, and the same can be said of skills, choosing in which order to unlock the skills and switching between different pieces of equipment depending on the area was really fun. Typically using the Lost Flame against the zombie prisoners is cool. The encounter rate is perfect, I like abusing Meditate+Heal and also like that it's not super efficient (it takes time) and that you don't have to and the game is well balanced, the boss fights are satisfying. Finally I like getting 3 torches all at the very beginning and using them whenever I want, that's typically the kind of thing which might scale weird (I mean it might make you play weird) to a bigger game but can be a very cool feature of a small game.

This a cool entry, thanks for sharing.

Developer

Really detailed feedback, thanks a lot ! I'm glad you found the game balanced because I struggled to make it nor too easy nor too hard.
Indeed I wanted every items and skills to be useful but situational. I'm happy you enjoyed the bosses too !
Yes 3 torches can work here because the game is small, If I make a bigger dungeon crawler I will have to think of an other system !
Thanks for the feedback!

1-bit artstyle looks very cool. I especially liked the enemies. There's a Dark Souls vibe in the game like the camp fire mechanic, music and overall art. The music is also very good, fits the mood of the game.

I think you also got the difficulty from Dark Souls :) The enemies have too much HP and they don't die forever. You eventually die after 2 or 3 fights bcs you don't have any healing item left. You also cannot avoid enemies bcs they appear randomly it's a good thing that the frequency of encounters is low at least.

Overall an artistically good looking game with punishing difficulty. A pretty solid entry. Nicely done!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback ! Yes indeed the game can be difficult at first but once you've bought some skills a got some items things start to fall in place, multiple people finished the game so i'm pretty happy, but yes it's not easy haha.
I'm glad you liked the art and ambiance too !

I really liked the mono 1bit graphics - well done on that front. Sound is find.

I found the tile size to be a bit small, and missed the ability to strafe, also wasn't a fan of the combat, as it takes you out of the scene and jars a bit.

There seems to be some form of issue with objects not being centered correctly on tiles. when you are next to the they sort of rotate round the tile and not pivot in the centre

But I do really like the presentation and the graphics :)

Developer

Thanks for the feedback i'm happy you liked the visuals !
Yes your right strafing would be great, I will add it after the jam if I have the time !
Indeed objects are not well centered, I didn't saw it at first but your right !

Cool art style and atmosphere, I didn't realise you could do this type of game with RPG Maker, very cool plugin, it's been a long time since I used it.  Very surreal and nice level layout and I liked the torches idea for the campfires that you had to save game with sparingly.  It did give the game doom and gloom feels doing it that way, which added to the atmosphere.  I also liked the timed spiked floors and hostile plants.  Good jam game, nice work!

Developer(+2)

I'm glad you liked the game ! Indeed this plugin is very cool, with it you can go 3d while keeping a top down view or go first person like I've done here.
Yes I thought it would be cool to limit the number of saves, it's an interesting challenge and since the game is not very long it's not too oppressive imo. I'm happy you enjoyed the spikes and hostile plants too, I wanted to give each area a very distinctive identity.
Thanks for this nice feedback !

The very familiar JRPG-style control scheme made it easy for me to get into and figure out systems.

Developer

Thanks for your feedback, yes I wanted a pretty simple combat system so I could focus more on building the atmosphere and world design !

Submitted(+1)

Nice black and white graphics. Not really fond of RPG maker combat, but it works. Good submission.

Developer

I'm glad your liked the game, thanks for the feedback. Indeed the RPG maker combat is a bit simplistic without some plugins/script edit, I tried to make it more suited for playing only one character using action points but it's still pretty similar to the original combat, it's not a combat system I love too, but I wanted to try it !

Submitted(+1)

REALLY good this. It needs some fine tuning, but you'd expect that being only given a week. What you've created here in that time is tremendous tbh!

Yeah, I'd like to be able to strafe left and right. And it's not always obvious where you're going, or what you can interact with.

But who cares. Easy 5 stars for me this one. Well done!

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for this really nice comment !
Indeed the game need some tuning and balance, I will maybe make some tweaks post-jam to improve upon it.

Yes that's a bunch of stuff in a week lol , RPG maker easy to use systems and premade combat allowed me to create things very fast, with an other engine I would not have been able to make as much stuff alone in a week, (I also had ton of free time this week so it helped a lot).

I will likely add strafe if I make a post jam update, I had multiple feedbacks on this subject.

Thanks a lot for the 5 stars ! it means a lot !

Another fantastic entry in this jam. The monochrome graphics fit the atmosphere perfectly, to go along with the mysterious setting and moody music. The movement is perfect and I like how you can turn and move simultaneously (thats how it felt anyway). The combat has tactical depth and lots of options to buy new skills. The 3 torches might be exactly right for the difficulty although I screwed up and went to the jail first, wasted one recovering and kinda set myself back.

Unfortunately I had a string of bad luck trying to complete the jail shardbearer (i managed to complete the forest). My first go I got executed for 100 damage when I had maybe 1 more round to go. The second attempt I defeated them, but died to bleeding and my items were grayed out for some reason, so that was a bummer. I'm gonna let it be for another go later. Hopefully it saves to local data because I really want to finish this one.

Awesome job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for this great feedback, I'm glad you liked the game !
Yes the jail is probably the hardest area to go first, while it's still manageable you quickly need to buy some skills (especially some dealing magic damage) to be able to defeat the enemies efficiently.

Yes like you saw the jail executioner has an execute attack that can instakill you, however he only uses it when your hp are low ! (under 25hp)

And yes I found that there is a bug with out of combat items, sometime when you exit combat you have to walk a few steps before being able to use items again, I'm not sure what cause this bug for now and I will investigate, like you said it can be really annoying if you are close to death and bleeding, so I'm sorry for this  unfair death.

Normally except if you play the game on another browser you should keep your save !

First off I'm in love the visuals here, just really great. Overall atmosphere is excellent, creating a really cohesive vibe. The world is intriguing and I wanted to know more about it, helped along by the writing. Also the game is just generally polished and complete. Great job for a jam game.

Developer(+1)

What a nice comment, thanks for the feedback I'm glad you enjoyed the game this much ! I worked a lot on the atmosphere so your words really means something.  I'm glad you enjoyed the writing since it's one of the first game I've done with some sort of narration (even if it's very vague), I will probably work the lore a bit more and use it as a basis for a dark fantasy TTRPG scenario I will play with my friends.

I. Have. Ascended! Pretty complete game! Monochrome graphics are great, though sometimes the billboard effect on doors can be confusing. I liked that items actually did something and helped depending on the area you're in. Overall a good atmosphere and good gameplay! I liked the addition of the demons after defeating the bosses, though they still spawn before fighting a shard bearer if you say no. Nice job!

Developer

Oh wow i'm really happy you've finished the game, and thanks for this great feedback ! Yes indeed the billboard effect can be confusing at time I will try to improve this if I make a post jam updated version.
Yes I really wanted items to be able to help you depending on the zone, magic resistance item being great for the cosmic ruins for example but almost useless in the dungeon, same for the skills, spells are powerful against the dungeon's armoured foes but pretty useless against the ruin's wizards.
The atmosphere was one of my main focus so I'm happy you enjoyed it !
For the demons they are actually not triggered by defeating the bosses, they spawn when your mind stat is low (at 20 or lower to be exact), it's to show you start to go insane and have visions of cosmic horror like creatures but it can be a bit unclear indeed !

Submitted(+1)

I love the polish on this. Combat feels great. Music and art feel cohesive. The billboard sprites are sometimes annoying to read. I would love if people implemented a toggle to swap QE/AD for turn/strafe.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback i'm glad you liked the game ! I really wanted to create a cohesive experience with a great atmosphere so I'm glad you liked that. Yes billboard sprites can be annoying at times and the turn/strafe idea you mentioned is really good, I will try to change this in a post jam updated version !

Submitted(+1)

This is one of my favorites so far. Overall great, cohesive vibes.

Developer (1 edit)

Wow thanks for this really nice feedback ! I'm happy you enjoyed your times with the game, building a good atmosphere was one of my main focus !

This feels a lot like a complete game, very impressive (to me) for a game jam entry!
I love the monochrome palette! It works nicely here.

Developer(+1)

I'm glad you enjoyed the game, I added most of the things I wanted (just had to sacrifice some hours of sleep lol) so I'm really happy you found the game complete !
I love game with monochrome palette, it  makes me nostalgic of a time I never knew, I always had a thing for indie games with similar art style so I wanted to make one too ! I'm going to check your game the art style looks nice too !
Thanks for the feedback !

Submitted(+1)

Great atmosphere and very cohesive art style. The game's visuals were very strong.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback ! I'm glad to hear that, building a good atmosphere was one of my main focus so I'm happy I did well !

Submitted(+1)

Good atmosphere and a very complete game. Menus, skills, everything and the kitchen sink ;)
I like the 1bit aesthetic very much and the sound is very nice, too.

Developer

Thanks for playing, I'm glad you enjoyed the game and found it complete ! There are still things to polish but I've added most of the content I initially planned.
And yes i'm a sucker for 1bit aesthetic, it makes me feel nostalgic of a time I never knew haha, same for Dungeon synths musics.
Thanks for the feedback !

Very good dungeon crawler, loved the atmosphere and the game play!

Submitted(+1)

Nice job! great presentation and atmosphere! great artstyle

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback, i'm glad you liked the atmosphere, it was one of my main focus I should say, I really wanted this retro dark fantasy vibe with some cool dungeon synth in the background !

Submitted(+1)

Very very cool! Everything being black and white really works well for the mood you're going for. The combat and object you pick up are also interesting. At first being so limited in resources/heal was a bit stressing me out, but there is not so much random encounter. Very nice entry.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback ! I'm glad you enjoyed the game !
Yes the beginning can be a little rough, especially depending on which zone you start, but by killing some enemies you can quickly gain some resources to heal yourself or restore your MP, after that you usually have enough points to get some skills and start kicking ass !
Nice for the random encounter, at first I feared putting too much of them because it's can quickly get annoying if you have to fight every 10 sec in this type of game.
