Game description
The vampire Desmond woke up from his long sleep and attacked the people of the village of Burnsley.

A knight sent by the realm, will go to the vampire's dwelling to settle this matter.

Form room to room, he will have to face the enemies and take the different secret passages of the castle to be able to face the terrible Desmond!

Theme interpretation
I based my game on the successive progression of rooms. To this, I was able to integrate secrets and hidden paths that allow the player to progress through the rooms.

The way you approached meeting all the conditions of the jam is truly impressive! The visuals, music, game design, and overall direction are top-notch. I particularly want to praise the design of the puzzles—they always made me think and pay attention to specific details and possibilities. I had to put in some thought, but I never felt stuck, which is fantastic. Overall, I'm simply amazed—this is a very well-made game. My only suggestion would be to improve accessibility, such as using a more readable font or adding options for people with poor eyesight. Excellent work!

Developer

Hi! Thanks for playing my game and for the kind words!

I agree with you about the font issue, you're not the first to point it out and I should definitely replace it in the future!

Thank you again for your detailed feedback! It really means to me!

It's a funny game. But... I have poor eyesight and it is difficult to read such a font. The hero strikes towards the cursor, not towards the turn. Is it necessary or is it a bug?

Developer

Hi! Thanks for playing my game!

I can understand that the font is difficult to read, I didn't think about it when I created the game.

I'm not sure I understand your second problem, the hero strikes towards the cursor and normally, the turn (around the player) should rotate towards the cursor as well.

If your game looks like the gifs I posted on the itchio page, then it's not a bug.

I hope I've answered your question correctly.

Really cool game, the graphics are really good and the music is pretty good too, the only thing I think could be improved a bit is the gameplay, the enemies feel a bit dumb and with most of them except the ranged you can just stay still and spam attack to kill them, but this is still one of the best games I've played in this jam, good job!

Developer(+1)

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to play my game.

I agree with you about the behavior of the enemies. For me, it is not an annoying thing to fight against them, but it's definitely not fun either.

I don't know if you managed to fight the final boss because his behavior is a bit more fun to play.

Anyway, thank you for your feedback!

No I didn't get to the bossfight, I died a couple of times before reaching him and I had little time yesterday, I'll give it a try now to see if I can reach him

Game feels really nice! Visual, audio and gameplay have good connection between them. I like how you outplayed dialog window. But is there only one level, or I'm just unable to see some doors?

Developer(+1)

Hi! Thanks for taking the time to play my game.

There are 30 rooms in total. In 10 of them, the next door is hidden and will only reveal itself if you interact with the elements in the room.

I definitely should have made things more obvious.

Thank you for your feedback!

Amazing job! I love the whole experience: the art style, the map design, the music. The gameplay concept is simple but it is super well executed. Look forward to see more of your works!

First off: Well done!
Of all games I tried this is my favourite so far.

The music is good, the colour palette looks amazing and the animations are butter smooth. I would have never guessed that you used Unreal for this (shows your skill and how flexible this engine is). As of now I had only one playthrough so far, but definitely coming back to it the next days.

Ran into the bat room almost immediately and got stuck. Looking through the comments gave me the solution. You could perhabs add some expression mark and delay (maybe an exclamation mark) to let the player know that the bat reacts upon you approaching. But this is just a small suggestion.

You did a fantastatic job in the given time and delivered a well polished game! Huge congrats!

Developer

Hi ! Thank you for your comment, i'm glad that you liked my game !

-I think the bat room is really problematic, i should make things more obvious.

-The idea of an exclamation point with a delay is very good, I hadn't thought of that, it will make things clearer that the player should not get too close to the bat.

I will try to bring this in the next update.

Thank you for your sugestion and for taking the time to play my game !

Fantastic entry.

First off, the visuals are really nice. Animation is fluid. Even though the character can only attack left and right, with all the other FX going when while attacking during an actual fight, I don't ever notice it; it feels right.

The dialogue write speed could have been faster and I would have liked a way to skip the Desmond cutscene after the first time seeing it. Although, it is nice that you can skip the dialogue with the old man after seeing it the first time.

Gameplay felt smooth. Going room to room and attacking things felt nice. The ranged and tank enemies add some nice variety to combat; mainly the ranged enemy who forces you to dodge more.

I'm playing on a 2K monitor so the screen was rather tiny for me and fullscreen didn't have a 2k resolution option and 1080p looked too blurry on it.

It's ludicrous that this was made with Unreal Engine. I didn't realize a 2D game like this was realistically possible with Unreal. Kudos.

My playthrough went something like the following:

  1. When through intro
  2. Explored a few rooms then got stuck in the pit trap room
  3. Restarted, went through the intro again
  4. Explored a few rooms, found the invincibility cheat
  5. Found the bat room and couldn't get past it
  6. Restarted again, went through the intro again again
  7. Explored a few rooms got stuck on the bat again
  8. Restarted, explored several rooms, found the pit trap again and abused the invincibility cheat to figure out how to get past the pit
  9. Explored a couple more rooms
  10. Went into a long outdoors hallway after a boss room
  11. Found ANOTHER BAT and got stuck again
  12. Turned off invincibility and backtracked to the pit trap room to kill my self and update my score on the scoreboard

The bat room was frustrating because the only solution I knew to it was to restart. I'm not sure if I missed something or if it was just unlucky RNG.

Regardless of the bat, fantastic game. Simple but smooth and fun combat. Fun running from room to room, cutting down enemies or solving quick little puzzles. Finding gold was fun too, I broke every single vase I saw. Cool that you added a story too.

PS

I'm genuinely surprised this has garnered such little attention so far. The game is fun and the screenshots and cover art look visually attractive.

I hope more people see it soon.

PS PS

The SFX were nice, although the writing sound could have used some more pitch randomness.

The music is nice, I really enjoyed it and the death screen homage to Funeral March was not lost.

Hi ! I really have appreciated your comments !

-Firstly, I agree with you for the first dialogue in the hall, I will find a way to skip it in the next update.

-For the resolution, i have a 1920x1080px monitor and i have not thought about higher ones. I understand that it could be annoying. I will try to fix that too.

-I've made Desmond's Castle with UE5 but to be honest, it is a mess working with this engine for a game like this, especially with blueprint only. I should have used Godot or Gamemaker studio, but i don't know how to use them as well than Unreal Engine.

-For the bat room, (this one room can be tricky) you will have to not get close to the bat. You will need to get around it until you will reach the next door. Normally, you will never get stuck in room. Each room will lead you to the next one untill the boss, and you don't need to go back or to restart your game. I think i should have to mention it in the begining of the game or something like that to make things clearer to the new players.

-I hadn't thought about randomizing the SFX, it is a good idea and i could definitely do that in the next update !

-Thank you for your detailed feedback and taking the time to play my game.

My english is not perfect but i hope you will understand anyway !

The animations are fluid and lifelike, I love the nostalgic feel and the animated backgrounds, the breathing UI, everything feels natural and just looks so good. I can't believe you incorporated so much in such a short time. Bravo!

Developer(+1)

I'm glad that you liked it !

I like spending time working on small graphical details like animating backgrounds or HUD elements. The fact that the game is low resolution (character is only 15px wide / 18px tall) and has only 4 colors makes things faster to draw and animate, saving time to work on other stuff.

Anyway, thank you for your feedback and for taking the time to play my game !
