Great work with this submission! I really liked the dialogue with the little Flame guys and the aesthetics were nice, too. However, I did find the crystal system to be a bit frustrating to use properly. I needed to restart levels several times mainly because I just wasn't getting how to use the crystals properly. Good job all around though. Keep it up!
Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I've been getting that sentiment a lot from people. Crystal reworking is officially a go. But after the jam is over.
That was super enjoyable! The dialogue was hilarious. Reminded me a little bit of Douglas Adams writing style. (And I love his writing!)
The third? fourth? level was definitely the most challenging - the one where you have to jump up a couple times first while collecting a blue and purple crystal. Maybe that should've been the final level. The rest was pretty doable. I really enjoyed the mechanic of "hidden" rooms/gems. Reminded me of Wario 3, which I played quite a bit on my gameboy back in the 00's :D
If I were to give you some feedback it would be to definitely maintain the dialogue. I didn't care too much for the crystals and the specials, it's mostly in the dialogue, finding the hidden souls in the secret rooms and opening the portal to advance. Maybe up the soul requirement for the portals to open so that you're forced to grab more of the souls.
And maybe (going by the wario 3 analogy from before), set extra portals in a level that you can only open with more souls and would require you to go back to previous levels after gathering more! But that's a whole other development path surely.
Thank you for a very pleasant experience! I'd read books of the writer if they-d have any.
Thank you very much for the feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I am surprised a lot of people are enjoying the writing. I was thinking that was going to be the weakest part. But I'm glad the efforts were not in vain! I'm also happy to see that you found the hidden rooms and gems. I was also worried people would just complete the levels without exploring but I'm glad that you found them enjoyable!
Thanks for the feedback!
Hey, I love the Art of the Game. Its really beautiful .
Think the "wall of Text" at the beginning is a little bit too much.
Overall a very very good game. Had a very good time to play it!
it would be nice if you would test my game too. Although I didn't quite finish it, I put a lot of time into it. https://itch.io/jam/gamedevtv-jam-2022/rate/1539557
Hey, thanks! I actually recently made changes to the game to address the "Wall of Text" issue. I definitely think it was too much also. So, hopefully, now it won't be as intimidating to read through! :)
I really like the way you put the story together, you seem to have a talent for that. Overall the game is good but that is what stands out to me.
TYSM!
Cool concept, did have a hard time figuring out how the crystals work or getting them to work. Got stuck in a hole after the dialogue about if the souls were actually real. Good game, enjoyed the dialogue a lot. Definitely echo the suggestion on messing with the look ahead, always felt like I was blind as to what was around the next jump.
Good job! Seriously enjoyed it.
Thank you! I'll probably end up uploading a new build to make those changes. i hope that's not too out of scope for what they said was allowed. It's just QOL changes, so I think it's fine :)
I think you're good. I would consider those hotfixes. It's not like you're adding additional content. Will replay when the new fixes are in.
Cute game, I didn't make it to the end because I got stuck down a hole, I tried the blue crystal but I guess I didn't get the timing right and I couldn't remember what the flame said about how to restart!
The opening dialogue was a little long IMO (and it says press E to continue even when there is no more dialogue), the breaking of the 4th wall did give me a chuckle though. I think we can all related to having only a short time left and having to compromise on things!
Maybe I missed it in the instructions but it wasn't clear that I had to press 1 (and later 2) to select the crystal I wanted to use. I pressed F a lot and nothing happened!
I thought the lag/damping on the camera move was too much for me. I ended up going through a portal before I finished the level because I went all the way to the right of my screen and it was just off-camera
These are all great tips! When I was watching my brother play I saw some of these issues. The portal thing happened to him a lot. I think I could add a look-ahead time for the camera. That would definitely be helpful. The dialogue was also at parts cutoff. I definitely think I can take your advice and fix up the game to make it better. I also watched my friend play it and I think the beginning dialogue made him scared to talk to other people because it was so long. Thank you!
Great games. It's difficult to use the power-ups tho
Thank you! Yeah, I might have to rework the power-ups.
I love the soul sprites and the flame guys! Great job!
Thank you!
Got to the end! The controls/power-ups were difficult to use, but managed to get it working with me (with lots of restarts).
Yeah after watching a few people play, they are definitely more difficult to use than I anticipated. Thanks for sticking it out for the whole game! :)
Nice game, a bit difficult using the power-ups, I lose them a few times XD.
Haha, thank you. Yeah difficulty is hard to gauge when I was making the game. I was trying to make it easy but I fear that I overshot
Nice game, a bit difficult using the power-ups, I lose them a few times XD.
