Okay I have to say that this is probably the most solid platformer I have played throughout this jam so far, the movement is smooth and it feels great to control, generally the character controller is just so well done. I really like the parallax background it looks really crisp, though I can't say the same about the foreground that looked oddly cheap compared to the background. I wouldn't say it is the best interpretation of the theme, but the game feels really great to play. I would say the biggest strength in the game is how fun it is, but its biggest weakness lies in its theme interpretation. But congratulations you probably made the best feeling platformer I have played in this jam

Developer

Hi thanks for the feedback! I spent a lo of time making sure the movements are solid so that i have good structure to build on. But i will see now after the jam to make more solid platforms, Although do you think the characters look cheap too or only the ground?  My interpretation of the jam was to think of it as Turning of bomb. But i can see how it was confusing. Thanks for the comment again!

I am unfortunately not a huge fan of the ground/platforms and the characters. But the game seems to work really well using squares and simple shapes so I really think you should lean into that. I would recommend looking at other games that also use simple shapes to create appealing visuals.

Here are two games for this jam that I think does that really well:
Switch https://itch.io/jam/gdevelop-game-jam-4/rate/2216920
Switch Puzzle https://itch.io/jam/gdevelop-game-jam-4/rate/2209769

I also made a game using only squares and simple shapes if you want to take inspiration from that https://atomicpotatoemil.itch.io/shapely-shootout Though I think the before mentioned games did it better.

I can also recommend looking at a commercial game called Thomas Was Alone that made awesome visuals using only squares.

I hope some of this helps, I am very impressed by your first jam game, and I can easily see the quality of your games increase exponentially in a very short time frame. You already got a great handle on mechanics, now it is just about practicing to create appealing visuals :)

Wow, I really love the feel of gameplay, it is so great! Really smooth controls, I wish more games felt like this. It is extremely relaxing to triple jump and float upward then wall jump, soar through the level. Nice work, thank you for sharing!

And if you get a chance to check out my game Foxy Boom Boxy, I would love any feedback, thanks!

I like the attempt of creating a replayable platformer with engaging movement, the addition of triple jump, wall jump and body slam were truly great. However, the presentation could have received some improvement, I was not really sure what I was looking at most of the time. But the foundation of the game is really solid and I would like to see a new version of this game with better graphics.

Developer

I was trying to make a different and unique experience. Can you please provide me with what better graphics could mean to you, thanks for playing regardless!

Submitted

A way the graphics could be improved would be to rethink the utilization of the color palette, while black and red are two good colors to mix together, it felt like there was little to no contrast nor balance between both. One simple way to balance both colors would be to use one of them for the platforms and obstacles, while the other is used for the characters. That way it would be easier to differentiate elements in the game; however, this is just an example, not a rule. There might be other ways to improve the graphics aside from the example presented in this reply, and I would admit that I respect and encourage your choice of trying to recreate a unique experience.

I loved using the triple jump! It was very fun flying up the stages. The quick fall was also fun, although I'm not sure if it being uncancellable is particularly helpful.

I love that I'm given no context for the story unfolding. It's very organic storytelling. Though, the script could use some proofreading.

While I like the strange, crimson worlds, the graphics could be doing a bit more. Maybe a visual cue indicating jumps left?

Great work!

That's a great idea!  With the jumps clue. The quick fall needs a quick reaction time to use and great timing so its for when people get more advanced. I'm still not sure about it though! You can see here how i use it

Your comment was super helpful thank you a lot!

Wow, that's smooth!

That's how i want people to play my game but I'm not sure how to let them understand the gameplay.

I HAVE MASTERED THE SAUCE

Developer (2 edits) (+1)

Congrats, i really tried to make it hard but you got it, Do you have any personal advice or stiff that needs to be added or improved? Since you mastered it of course

The fast drop can not be canceled, I tried to use them over pits and I can't jump out of them.

I love the move mechanics and how you can jump in midair for a couple of times, wall kick a bunch of times, and fast fall for speedrunning purposes. It's hard to get a good score, however, especially when I'm trying to get used to the controls.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks, i.m happy you enjoyed! All the A ranks are more than possiable  when you get used  to the controls, ALthough i tried to make them as hard as possiable so people can perfect there movements!

Submitted

The controls took a little while to get used to, but when you get it, it's a blast. Great job!

Developer

Thanks, I was worried about getting used to the controls. When the jam ends i will add a better tutorial.

Amazing. Not sure yet about the theme of the jam but so far the best on my list.

I would change the colors between the left and right buttons.

Developer

Defusing a bomb is kind of like turning it of xD. Yeah maybe it wasn't the best game for the theme.

Good game but the graphics could be improved! Well done :)

Developer(+1)

I tried to make the look special  by drawing it in a certain way, i will see how i can improve on it and yeah your game is very good!

You've definitely done an excellent job creating this game, and I had a lot of fun playing it. The game mechanics flow smoothly, and controlling the character feels easy. However, the vibrant colors and attention-grabbing sprites you've used can sometimes make the game a bit challenging to play. To further enhance the experience, I'd recommend revisiting the color scheme. Additionally, implementing a well-designed main menu could significantly contribute to making this game even better. Keep up the great work!

Fun game! (after I figured out you can keep refreshing your jump infinitely on the walls, you should really explain that mechanic). I actually kinda wanna steal the idea of an endless wall jumper myself!

Not sure how it really fits with the ON/OFF theme though...

Developer

Hi thanks for trying it should be related to the theme in the way you turn of the bombs and get ranked according to your time!
