Very strange game. Does not really hit the the theme in my opinion, but I liked it. Mostly because of the crazy good levels. The quality of the puzzles made it very addictive. Difficulty curve was also very good. Not sure why illuminate must be manually turned on. Wouldn't I always want that on ?

Very creative idea! Played it all the way to the end, really fun :)

I design puzzle games and let me tell you, these were the best puzzle designs I've seen in this jam! You know how to teach the player without telling them anything and the difficulty curve is perfect. I made it to level 17 and only stopped because I didn't know how long it went on for. Some of them had me scratching my head for a bit. Very well done!

Developer

It's almost 40 levels! And in my notes I had 15 more  or so  specific ones that I couldn't do because of time (or without fixing my crappy, hacky code) and a bunch more in vague-ville. If you wanna see something else, Hazelden always does great PuzzleScript games: https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/462806 & http://www.draknek.org/. Already I can see a bunch of weak, unfinished and repeated ideas in my submission, and that first border-pushing level could definitely be made a bit more explicit; time makes fools of us all. It looks like I might be making a full version at some point, too, so it might be a whole lot better pretty soon!

Love the jam puzzles like this, requires some lateral thinking to finish the puzzles. Difficulty curve seemed good, you done did good :D

its mechanics are confusing and unexplained, to really enjoy this game you need to go in knowing how to control the "screen" and what the boulders can do to it. not mentioning other possible mechanics.

otherwise this game is a good little game jam time waster that makes late-night energy-drink-infused me cry play the game get stuck cry leave come back cry without playing the game leave come back play the game cry and pass out. I don't know if this is the games fault or my own personal problem but either way its still good.

I liked this, pretty original. But I couldn't really understand what was going on at first. Got stuck at a certain point (level 10?). Didn't really understand the new block type introduced in level 9. Would have got stuck earlier if not for the ability to illuminate the map.

Cool little puzzle.

Here's mine if you can spare some time playing it. Many Thanks:

Super good puzzle game. Is not my type of game, I realize after I got stuck at second level of water. But really like it. Maybe I'll come back to this to finish it.

This is really good! I'm impressed you were able to come up with a novel puzzle mechanic idea and also implement many interesting puzzles in the timeframe, while adhering to the theme. Great job!

My only complaint is that the mechanic could have been explained, but it was kinda fun to figure out how the stones worked myself.

I recommend trying to remake this in a proper engine with better sprites and sound effects. I think this concept could work as a full game.

Developer

Yeah, I wasn't sure if just the first level with a stone and the border would be enough, or if I should have forced it to move on the earlier level with the first stones. I figured it was probably better to not introduce two ideas at once.

I'm slowly working on my own basic C engine for another game, but like 80% of the annoying parts that both would need to do are shared, so I'll probably wind up just incidentally making this a real game on my path to something more ambitious!

Enjoyed it - great game! Fun and original puzzle concept that is definitely worth expanding on. I agree with others that the illumination mechanic makes the solutions a little too obvious, but with some touch ups in another engine this concept could really shine!

I'm currently stuck at the first level containing both grey and red rocks. I think I cheesed the last level and now I don't get how the red rocks are supposed to work?
Otherwise great game! I'm amazed how you made so many levels in such short time.

Developer

Right, yeah, I see that easy win on the previous level. The red rocks are pushed by the border when you move it, even if they're deep inside it.

Thanks! Speed's just the benefit of using something like PuzzleScript: I started like 10 hours before the (original) deadline so it was only 2 hours or so to program everything and then the rest was made fast by the simple level editor.

I think the concept is really cool, but having the ability to turn the light on all the time, in my opinion, kinda ruined the experience / design of "One Screen". I also think this game feels a little too similar to other box pushing game in terms of mechanics, which prevented me from giving it a 5 star. The added difficulty from laps and water doesn't really ties to tat theme of "only one..." But I have to say that the levels are pretty cool, especially considering that there are so many of them. Thanks for those puzzles, I had a good time! (0 v 0)

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, if I had the free time to do some actual programmin' instead of relying on puzzlescript (which can't even do translucency for some reason???) that border woulda looked a lot more convincing. Couldn't think of a good way to show what was in the darkness, and just having it be black for almost 40 levels would have been unplayable. My thinking for the "only one" was to make that the border, and then have all the other stuff interact with the border in weird ways - but I guess the water really doesn't accomplish that at all! Oh well, hindsight's 20/20, eh?
