Thank you for letting me know about this game. this was really fun!! You've got nice simple mechanics but they work really well and the pacing was spot on!!
Really amazing game, The art is really good and so is the use of sounds. Its cool how you practice then get into a routine of performing like a magician would. When I saw the third card it scared me as I thought I would have to a trick blind, would be cool if you added random events to the shows that tried to mess you up. Would be cool if the royal court was inside the throne room to make it feel different. Nice that there are different animations if you fail, I also like that the bunnies help the magician. Well done on the game really fantastic!
Thank you for commenting and playing our game! Yes we thought people might panic when them see that third card last minute, we decided it would be wise to let it run itself instead giving anybody heart attacks. ;) It would be cool to have a much different background for inside the castle for sure! I wanted to add more noble looking audience as well.
The art looks great and I like the music, wonder if that's actually how the bunny trick is done :>
LOVE this game - stunning art of course, I love the use of sounds, especially during the performances. I almost felt that rush of adrenaline. What a great way of presenting this and having everyone stare at you while you perform magic tricks. Love the twist at the end too! And the hints of what to do were perfect. Lots of fun!! Well done!! Can't wait to play your next game :)
Thank you for the fantastic comment! We were a little disappointed that we weren't able to put more tricks in, but so happy to hear people still feel like a magician anyways while playing. :D
What a fun game! I definitely ended up feeling like a complete wizard wowing the crowd by the end of it. The visuals and sound design were amazing, so well done.
I know so many magicians, this game, this atmosphere is really into it... nice music, nice gameplay!
I Like it.
Love seeing Sophia's art every jam :) whether it's pixel art or more traditional, it always stands out! And she has quite the team too, letting all elements complement and enhance each other.
This was both a wonderful idea and an amazing execution, I loved the idea of practicing your tricks, which serves to both give you a sense of mastery over the game's mechanics, makes you know what happens in the box when you're tapping, and makes you feel like the magician opposed to the crowd. I can see how much attention to detail went into each trick's animation and execution, so I can understand that there were just the two. If you ever do decide to add an additional trick, I'd be very happy to playtest. Not sure how a full arsenal would fit into the awesome twist ending, maybe a continued game where you continue performing?
Just one thing with the first trick, when I took my time with clicking the circles, I'd get a miss on the third circle when I clicked the second one.
Aw that's a super nice comment! Willowblade. It is definitely a team effort, I agree. Art by itself doesn't stand out in a game if there isn't codes there to make it dance, or sound there to give everything life. :)
Very happy to hear you mention like seeing how the bunnies work inside their box during practice but not seeing them during the show. It was a rather complicated idea that we weren't sure if we were going to pull it off, since it require so much from both art and codes. We are happy that it is working and you noticed it.
Oh, we might take you up on testing a third trick... assuming we don't get lazy like we usually do after a jam.
P.S. I ran into that same bug you experience during testing, not all the time, just sometimes. John couldn't debugged it last minute because it doesn't seem to happen to him. But now there's two of us, maybe he'll do more looking. :P
It is a really unique experience :) The atmosphere, sound, and visual presentation are all really nice. I needed some time figuring out how the tricks and controls are supposed to work.
Please consider rating my game too. :D
I got dizzy xD
Fun and unique game, everything looks in place, every element compliments the other, good job!
WHAT A TWIST!
The first thing that stood out was the super polished presentation. Really impressive! Obviously there are only two tricks, but I can see the potential for expansion - its a really solid foundation. The concept is really interesting and creative. The sound, art, and visuals are really well done. Overall positive impressions - a lot more polish than I would expect for a jam game.
Glad you liked the twist! I wasn't sure if we had time to work it in, but John insisted so we did. :) Not sure how far we can go with this game at the moment considering how difficult it was to just do two tricks. But we are definitely considering implementing a bit more base on your comments and others. Thank you!
What a fun game lol! Abracadabra! Alacazam! A brilliant creation that you've made for this jam!
I really loved the ending, it was a nice little twist! Pretty impressed by size of the game, with multiple locations each with their own backgrounds and so on.
I'll need to replay the game in the summer to see those dragons though.
Ha ha, I have to give credit of the crazy town names to my brother Paul, who coded most of the game. John and I gave him super vague direction at the beginning for the map, so he made up most of the town and village names by himself and probably thought we would change it all out later.
Guess now we have an excuse to do a sequel. :D
This game is amazing and very polished. The ending was also nice :)
Haha, that ending. Tricks get a little repetitive but I see from another comment that more tricks were planned, and time was short. I get that!
Yea, when we realized that we didn't have time for more tricks we tried to compensate by making the game a fair bit easier so that folks would be able to win faster to at least see the ending. Glad you enjoyed playing. Thanks for the review and rating!
@jmbjr once again excellent work!
That ending :D
Graphics, SFX and gameplay was great!
Unfortunately.. it does become a bit repetitive after a while... Maybe there could have more variation on the magic trick itself (random yellow circles instead of fixed yellow circles?) Maybe even a little bit more stories in-between locations?
Also I couldn't go from Wachovia Berg to Yorechannel on the map? Might be a bug?
Anyway, great work :)
Thanks for playing! And yea, we overscoped the initial idea (which had a plan for 10+ tricks that you'd mix and match for each show) but had to start cutting stuff early to ensure we were able to finish. I think our original idea had some of the ideas you suggested.
And whoops! yep, looks like the connection between those two cities was broken so, uh, I suppose that's just the result of crumbling kingdom infrastructure :) Thanks for reporting that!
I'm impressed you were able to get some much content in the span of this game jam, really great job. The artwork and use of sound effects / music was wonderfully done. I thought it was an adequate challenge, and the linear story line kept me engaged.
I did have a black box appear during every "banish" phase that was a little jarring, but maybe that was a browser problem. Here is a screenshot:
Thanks! yea, our secret, apparently, is No Sleep. Glad you enjoyed the challenge. Adequate is the perfect word. On one hand the game is trivially simple once you've practice a bit, but on the other hand, it seems kinda overwhelming at first. Balancing jam games has proven to be very difficult.
We've never seen that particular graphical glitch so that's somewhat concerning. We mostly used Chrome browsers. If you don't mind sharing the browser and/or OS, I'd appreciate the info. Definitely hope it's isolated to just you (sorry!) but I'll fire it back up and see if I can figure out what's going on.
Thanks again for playing and for the feedback
"our secret, apparently, is No Sleep." : Lol!
Good News! we may have figured out your graphical glitch issue! This appears to be a WebGL issue. The textures for the banish trick are HUGE (> 9000 pixels. blame bad jam design decisions!). WebGL has a value called: Max Texture Size. Often this is set to 16384 pixels, but we've noticed that sometimes this value can dynamically change. You can see the current value for your browser by heading to: https://browserleaks.com/webgl. If the value is 16384, you'll be able to play OK. If the value is 8192, then it won't load properly. The weird thing is, we've seen it at 8192 (causing the black box issue) then if you close all browsers and applications and open a fresh browser, it goes back to 16384 and the game plays fine, so while The Internet says this is a value set by the GPU, it seems like that value can dynamically change.
So one solution is to just close all applications and reopen everything. Or play a downloaded version.
Anyway, sorry for the issue back when you ran into this but at least you'll know what the issue might be if you run into anything similar in the future.
