I enjoyed crafting in the cauldron! It took me a while to find the recipe card but once I understood what I was suppose to do and where to find the new recipes enjoyed the experience. Would be nice to have forage take all automatically so in my lazyiness i can just spam one button. :D

Yeah I'm thinking I could have done a better job in guiding to the recipe cards.  Maybe some indicator pointing at the cards at the bottom of the screen to start.  Doesn't need to be a tutorial, but getting people to start there and know where to find it next time makes sense.

I really like the idea, and enjoyed cooking the witchy recipes! I wish it had some more feedback for when you screw up a recipe, and the UI can be confusing at times. Great job overall, though!

I'm a sucker for following recipes, so this was a fun little time!

I did find the controls a little tough to get a hang of as there was lots of different click combinations to remember in order to do everything efficiently. And I also wasn't quite sure how the foraging was actually working, so I was just spamming f -> r to pick up tons of stuff with seemingly no drawback.

But it was fun building up cash to buy better and more complicated recipes, I could definitely see coming back to something like this with some more depth and refinement. Great work!

Glad you liked it.

Yeah It ended up being a button mash experience for foraging but I feel like there could have been a way to have the raw ingredients have value/scarcity.  The natural balance in a survival game would be a ticking clock like food running out or the sun going down, but I didn't really want to include survival mechanics here.  You don't really want to time gate resource generation in a game like this unless you're trying to get someone to enter their parent's credit card for crystals.

Hot tip: if you alternate between one of the keys and mouse on the other button, you can mash forage/take all quite fast.

Once I understood the instructions, I had quite a bit of fun! I did run into a few issues with the audio crunching a bit (It may have just been the browser version).
I will agree with some of the other comments, that there were times were the controls slowed down my experience, however, I feel as though this game has a lot of potential!

Glad you had fun playing.

It'd be good to track down where the audio was crackling in-case it's something I did with the samples.  The bubbling/fire sounds were ~5 seconds or so, was it like clicking regularly like at the end of the loop or like when lots of things were playing?  Also if you don't mind, which browser were you using?

After looking at the instructions and fiddling with the controls a bit, I got the hang of this cooking game and really enjoy it!  The game loop of gathering resources -> craft things -> unlock better tools / recipes -> gather more resources -> craft more things has always been super addicting for me, and this game has it down.  (Games with crafting mechanics have a place in my heart, haha.)

I also like the flavor of the game. The recipe book (with instructions from two clearly different authors) was a nice touch.  Instructions to "eat with piety" and similar remarks made me chuckle.

My only main complaint is that the controls felt a bit clunky, which slowed down the gameplay for me. For example, I think you could have gotten away with using the same button for entering and exiting a scene, instead of 2 separate buttons.  Same with picking up and dropping in ingredients with the scoop / flagon - it would be great if this could both be triggered by left-click.

Overall, I had fun with this game.  I think it has a lot of potential!  It just needs a little more polish and more streamlined controls, and I would be completely down to play it for hours.

Glad you enjoyed it.  Yeah I've had many a game where the resource re-investment loop hooked me too.

Yeah the controls ended up a bit awkward in places.  A lot of the core of the game was inventory management.  I was going for the feel of baking/cooking while following a recipe i.e  measuring ingredients, reacting to feedback as it cooks.  I think it would have benefited from more tools, so there could just be a 1-cup measuring cup that picks up and drops with left or right click if you prefer that, or something else with different control features.  The flagon and scoop ended up more like a chemistry pipette in that you'd pickup 4 cups, drop 2 hear and drop 2 there.  Maybe a shift-click with the empty hand to type in a count for people that prefer that.

I can see how the E to enter Q to leave is awkward if you're used to E to toggle.  I was thinking you could get a faster rhythm going as you get familiar but sticking with the conventions probably makes more sense.

Yeah I think there's potential for a larger game, not sure if I'll be interested in revisiting at some point.  A lot of feature creep was cut.  Ovens, purchased equipment, different prep types, egg cracking technique, more creative recipes, non-mashing forage mechanics, etc.

I found it quite confusing trying to figure out what to do.  After foraging in the two map areas that were open, I tried putting some of them into the cauldron but had no idea what to do next.  There didn't seem to be any way to brew anything.  And even though there were some recipes available in the market, I had no money to buy them.  Starting the player off with a few starter recipes would be a good idea.

Also, the processing table just added an icon to some of my items which then vanished after I sorted my inventory.  I can't tell if it had any sort of effect.

Developer

Hey thanks for trying the game out.

Sorry you ran into a block.  At the bottom of the screen you should have some recipes and notes to start with that will give you an idea of where to start.  Maybe you're playing at a resolution where they're cutoff?  There's also instructions in the pause menu that will give you the basics.  Let me know if you can't find them as it's likely a bug I haven't run into.
