Very nice game! The game was well-scoped for a gamejam and I liked the artstyle! But I think the game really shines in the game design, there are a lot of choices there that I appreciated, like:

  • Enemies don't hurt you but instead act as a bounce. That was really nice cause they were pretty hard to avoid, but still add a good challenge.
  • Falling offscreen doesn't kill you, it hurts you but then you have a nice recovery window and can go through some obstacles. Makes the more chaotic moments more forgiving.
  • Almost every platform jump will drag the screen high enough to remove the last platform. Keeps from allowing the player to slow the pacing down and recharge the platform charges, better for game pacing and challenge (especially for a high score game).
  • Indicators for the offscreen hazards. Very helpful, would be hard to excel at the game without them. Puts more of the onus of failure on the player.
  • Platform charges. Adds a lot to the push-pull of the game! The timing of recharge feels just right, and it does a lot to push the player to explore options for playing the game. Also reins in the power of being able to put platforms wherever.

Great job!

Nice artwork and the concept is pretty sound. The general idea of placing platforms during the action works well. A couple of minor frustrations: the camera moves up but not down? A few times the wisp "fell off" the screen and didn't always come back. The other was the mousewheel to rotate the platform. Laptop users with trackpad might need an alternative, and the sensitivity was high on my Mac mouse so it was hard to control. You could do a two-step process: place, then rotate. But maybe at speed that doesn't work. In the end I just didn't rotate at all and the game worked fairly well without it.

Overall some nice touches, especially around the aesthetics.

Fun game! Very nice pixel art too. It's really pretty (especially the title screen)

I got 1980!

Hard game! I got to 660.

Using the scroll wheel was a bit awkward. I often forgot which way was which!

It was a simple and good core game idea you came up with on the theme.

Very good looking entry too, well done!

Hm, any other control methods you would have liked? I feel like using keyboard keys would have had the same kind of problems, but i'd love suggestions.

Thank you!

I don't mind the scroll wheel, I was able to get used to it pretty fast :)

One thing that comes to mind is placing it on button down and while holding down you control its rotation by moving the cursor, and then button up completes the placement. Might work, no idea :-)

Thank you, very kind!

DEUS Nubes is a fun, challenging game with magnificent pixel art. Additionally, it has a complete gameplay loop: menu, game screen, and integrated highscore screen. This is the style of game that is easy to understand and play but difficult to master. If there's any extra functionality to add, it would be integrating an online leaderboard among players. Do you think you can add this in the future?

In any case, excellent work!

Thanks for the feedback! I usually don't do much updating on Jam Games, but i am considering it for this one.

If i do decide to come back to this a leaderboard would be very high up on the priority list, i think it would add a lot of replayability.

Thank you!

Great, detailed pixel art.

Reminds me of icy tower, although the gameplay is different :)

At first I wasn't sure what flashing triangles are for. I thought they were collectibles, because they had the same color as pixie. With them flashing, I couldn't notice "!" written on them :) Having different colors for danger and enemies could help here (rather than the same as pixie)

I checked the menu audio settings, I think you are using slider value to set audio bus volume directly. You should pass it through linear_to_db (or db_to_linear, to go in reverse; accessible in global scope) to make the whole range of slider (which should be in range 0-1) usable. Now changing it slightly results in almost muted audio.

I found a way to cheat - if you spawn cloud inside pixie, you get a turbo boost and fly up very fast :)

Cheers!

Thanks for the detailed feedback!

The triangles were made pretty early in development, and by the end i just kinda deemed them "good enough", they could use some polish/clarification tough. For the colours i tried limiting myself, i do see the advantage different colours would have had tough.

The advice for the audio setting is highly appreciated! I noticed the problem, but didn't get around to tinkering around with it some more, definetly something learned for next time.

Yeah, that "cheat" is real weird, i am limiting maximum velocity and it just ... exceeds it anyway. Honestly, it does make you so fast, you can't really control where your going, so i didn't stress too much about it. Almost a contender for the Icarus Wildcard haha.

That's also a skill, to deem something good enough, leave it and focus on something else - something I definitely struggle with :D

Developer(+1)

To be fair it was more me, wanting to work on more important parts, not me being truly happy with it, so i get it :D

Strong resolve and probably a good choice :)
