What a great game! Loved the art, music, and overall design. I found it to be pretty challenging to time the bombs. The hit boxes seemed a bit unforgiving at times, too. One of the ghosts spawned right above the player character, resulting in an unavoidable collision. But overall it's an impressive submission!

Developer

I think I Def need to be a bit more generous with the collision of the full version!

Takes me back to bubble bobble on the commodore 64. At some point the lives must have broke because I could not die and make it to the jumping dudes on level 11 which I barely was able to beat then level 12 had more of them.

I really wanted to to like this game more but the controls felt a little awkward - in partial jumping and  the bombs where just a little to hard to control also the hit boxes seemed really bad. Definitely has a lot of potential if these items are addressed.

Really did enjoy playing it though, thanks for submitting.

Fun game! My best score was about 21000, dying at level 7 at my 3rd attempt.

I like to go in fully blind in game jam games at first to see what happens, so the first attempt it took me a bit to figure out what to do with the bombs and beams, but after that point the two-step process felt intuitive and the gameplay was challenging in a good way. Level 3 seemed like a bit of a difficulty spike, and I feel like on level 7 the screen was a bit cluttered with enemies jumping and shooting several fireballs to dodge all of it, but I like the variation in enemies and thinking of how to adjust your strategy to hit each one, which one to take out first, etc. Putting the bomb down instead of rolling it was much easier to hit the enemies with, it's a neat extra option.

The visuals were cool, and pretty detailed for a game jam imo (love the chain physics in the background).

I didn't really pay much attention to the powerups, since I was usually too busy with watching out for the enemies, so I didn't always know what the upgrades did or whether it was just a random collectible.

Also the skeleton ghost that slowly chases you is great, reminds me of the great stress of taking too long in a Spelunky level. The hitbox of it seemed a bit big though, or at least one time I died without actually touching it it seemed (?).  And one time it spawned in a place where I jumped into it, so I'd add something like a warning or gradually appearing silhouette so you know to get out of the way there.

Overall I enjoyed the game! In some ways was a bit reminded of the single player mode of Towerfall (sorry to be one of those "that reminds me of" people, but it's meant in a good way).

Developer

thanks!:your right level 3 was a pain in the butt and thatbwas after I added extra platforms in the middle to make it a bit easier!the screen does get rather cluttered which is why especially with adding 2 player coop going forward with it there will be a lot more screen real estate.thsnks for the great feedback tho!

Kind sad I can't play this as it's not working for me on Mac :(

Fun game! I like the hanging chains haha, I know how tricky they can be!

A lot of polish you have put in there. I like all these small but cool juicy elements! Good Job on this!

Developer(+1)

thanks Xandruher, the juice is the best bit after the intial build !

The art and 8 bit feel is Awesome! Quite fun as well. It could've used a tutorial, though. The controls were a little difficult to figure out. Good sounds too!

Developer

thanks Dude, it totally needed a tutorial but i just ran outa time!

Really nice game, at first i died a couple of times while figuring out the keys to press, the art it's beautiful but feels a bit saturated, and the pixel art was not consistent with the background (but thats just mi opinion, your artist look realy talented). Any way i like your game.

Developer

your correct theres a number of aspects of the  art that didnt use pixel style which made it all not quite gel - thats the time restraints of the jam tho!

This is an amazing entry! Took me a minute to learn the flow of the bombs and exorcise but once I did I had a great time. I'd love to know how you made the controls/movement feel so good!

Developer(+1)

thanks! its all down to a couple of simple tricks - use coyote time and jump buffers on the player script - this`ll get you heading in the right direction!

Good job, fun and pretty graphics, and a good music too.

A very nice remix of  pac man, but in a platformer ! Controls are good, animations are very satisfying, music and sound are cool... I just don't understand very well the bomb an exorcism mechanics, maybe you should have put a tutorial in your game, but overall very cool entry !

Developer

we wanted to put a tutorial in but we ran out of time!

A fun and functional game with cool sounds, sprites, and atmosphere. The mechanics are simple but do the job, and you can have a really good time progressing through the levels.

However, there are a couple of things that could be improved to make it more user-friendly. For instance, the "start" button displays the letter/button "A," but when I press that key, nothing happens (I guess it's for playing with a controller, right?). Also, on my keyboard, the key for exorcising in the game isn't "M" as stated in the itch.io description; in my case, it's "," and it took me quite a while to find the right key to perform actions.

Developer(+1)

thanks Caprog!

Thats odd, its def M on both the machines I tested it on! - as for the start it should be either A on the joypad or spacebar

Great game!

Controls are snappy, animations and sfx make moving feel great. Played with controller.

It takes a bit to get used to bomb delay, but it's a nice feeling when you do hit and it's meaningful with the amount of enemies on level.

I'd maybe make first level a bit easier to get used to controls, and not have the ghost spawn there.

It's a nice thing that the optimal strategy seems to be to stay low (with enemies not being able to jump down and bomb aiming). With most games you get an advantage if you go up, but not here - took me some time to realize it, and that was a nice "puzzle", when you get a hang of the gameplay element.

Love the pixel art, very detailed. With chains moving and all the details in environment.

Some props I think had incorrect Z index - i.e. tombstone would be in front of the player, just a minor visual bug.

Cheers!

Developer(+1)

thanks for the great comments! with regards to the z access on the tiles, thats as it was ment to be a level of background, level of playforms and a layer you walk behind!

Submitted

Might not be a bug then.

I just noticed with tombstone, it being so big that the player character is completely hidden behind.

With other, smaller props being drawn on top, it looked very nice.

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

yeah,as intended tho not the best for gameplay! Id made a last min change to the height of the player and enemies so that didnt help!

Submitted(+1)

Z indexes are a pain. :D Any change is hard to test fully and can make the game unplayable if you put something in the wrong order :D

Developer(+1)

your not wrong!, the amount of faffing about to get the game hud and all the extra stuff was infuriating!

Submitted(+1)

Had a great time playing this - great aesthetic and graphics. Love how juicy the gameplay feels and really nice feeling movement.

Gets really tough in later levels! I found it quite hard to get the bomb timed perfectly, as the enemies move quite fast, but really satisfying when you land it and then get to blast them with a swift exorcism!

Congrats on a fab game!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thanks Goosesoft, your right it does get tough! expanding it into a full title its goign to need some balancing!

Submitted(+1)

Had a good time with this game!

Music reminded me of Jump by van Halen, "go ahead and ascend, ASCEND!"
I felt that timing the bomb with the walking of the enemies was kind of hard to master. Did you learn to consistently clear first level in a short time? Although 2nd attempt went much faster, but it felt more like chance for me. 3rd level was a mayhem, haha it turned really hard. How many levels did you make?

Nice touch with the ragdoll chains and the lights.

A very wellmade game, good job!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

thanks WigHz! you can drop a bomb where your standing as well by crouching 1st - makes it easier! but I can clear the 1st few levels with my eyes closed now - playtesting for you!

15 levels in total - it does get rock hard tho!

Submitted

Ah, I missed that mechanic, I'll give it another try knowing that

Submitted(+1)

That's a really nice game.
