Great work, this was a lot of fun. I'd definitely play a more filled out version of this!
Nicely polished and really delivered on the story experience. Great ending. Sad, but kind of made me chuckle, too. I liked that the theme played a role in the mechanics, even if taken very literally. I liked needing to drop the candle in places to continue forward. Also, the lighting was well used and enhanced the atmosphere.
I would agree with others that the controls felt pretty dated. I also think I encountered a bug where the grate would not respond to interaction.
Overall, fun experience, with some impressive cinematic qualities to it. I look forward to seeing what you make next!
Thanks for the great feedback Maaack.
Would you mind expanding on the control issues was there bindings you would change or was it the controlling of the character and them feeling rigid when moving against walls?
I'm also curious about the interaction bug. Was the grate in range of the candle when trying to interact?
Cheers
I really enjoyed the atmosphere of this game. The sound did a great job to improve it. There were really only two issues I had. If I was walking against a wall, I would get stuck instead of slide if I was trying to walk diagonally. The other was when I would have to drop the candle to pick up a grate, I couldn't interact with anything after dropping a candle until I replenished a candle. Seems like a bug to me.
I admittedly did a pretty poor job on my character controller. The non-sliding being the biggest problem so apologies for that.
As for the 2nd issue, if I'm understanding it correctly, the ability to interact is tied directly to what the player can see in the light. So if an interaction is too far out of the lights range you wont be able to interact.
I'm glad you enjoyed the atmosphere, it seems a little rain audio goes a long way :)!
Nice puzzles and exploration here! Good use of anticipation. Lovely detail that some puzzles couldn’t be done with a small candle.
Thanks for playing. I'm glad the small candle limitation wasn't lost in my mad rush to finish the game. I very much wish I could have done more puzzles and have a nice ramp in difficulty. In a way I'm glad I didn't have the time because I'm bad at thinking up fun puzzles!
This was a treat to explore. The wonderful music and atmosphere complemented the story very well.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed the atmosphere, I wish I could have written more complex music but the deadline crept up on me :).
Sadly I was unable to run it in any browser on my $6000 MacBook M3 Max. Not sure how to make it work but it shows error about shader memory. Perhaps adding Win/Mac export might help.
Project setting "rendering/limits/global_shader_variables/buffer_size" exceeds maximum uniform buffer
That's a shame. Reading about that error it seems to be a Mac specific issue with Godot's defaults.
My game is fully 2D with no complex shaders and only using the default 2D lighting. It's odd that the default project settings values are at odds with Mac. If this is a consistent problem for Mac users I'll see if I'm allowed to change that setting and rebuild.
I loved the short story (although the hat at the entrance gave it away very quickly). The star of the show here is the sound design. The music fits and loops so well and the wind and rain really add to the overall great atmosphere. Good job :)
Doh, I knew that might not be subtle but I wanted to leave some clues lying around. Ah well, lessons learned. Thanks for playing and for your feedback.
I ran out of time to improve the music, I wrote and recorded a rough version then only had time to make it loop and clean it up. I'm happy some of the atmosphere came through!
The music and atmosphere are great. Now I'm extra impressed that you wrote the music while making a story based game. It takes a lot of work
Great work! The mechanics of placing the candle to get around obstacles was really well done. I could see how you could build on this more too, with more puzzles revolving around the candles. The lighting and intro animation were also very well done.
Thanks for the feedback LGWV! I'm a programmer but trying to slowly get to grips with other disciplines. I wish I had more time this jam to fully flesh this out into a better game but I'm glad it gave a somewhat positive impression.
