Oof, this one is rough! Communicating to the player what is happening is the game's weakest point: the story doesn't really give enough context to let me know what is going on or why I care, several battle mechanics are handed to me right away with no explanation, and it's not clear that I have accomplished the goal of defeating the green enemies when I did because they continue to fly around after their defeat - no text popup saying I did the thing, nothing in my inventory, nothing until I check the end door again and am told I can proceed.
I appreciate that you were trying to make a sci-fi game - which I respect and love the idea of - but the execution just wasn't there. I still appreciate that you entered and hope your future endeavors fair better.
Thanks for the totally fair review! (it's SO rough, but I decided that I was going to submit no matter how well put together the end result was going to be, too many jams beforehand where I didn't submit. So while there many bugs that would even have been easily solved, It was better for me to post this as it was I think then to drop out)
While technically there actually is an indication of how many info cards you have BUT that's only mentioned (if I remember correctly) when going to the portal too soon... You're right that it wasn't clear. The player should be told that getting those is the goal and that they actually received them. And the rest of the game suffered from a similar lack of communication.
The future 'definitive edition' will certainly address all issues in some fashion.
Overall: Very strong potential here, it's just a shame that you didn't have the time to fully realize your vision.
Gameplay: Unfortunately pretty buggy, although I do like the SRPG-style foundation. Encounters would trigger at random even if no enemies were near me. I also lost track of one of the green drones because it clipped through a wall. Enemies pretty much blowing through your entire HP meter in one turn is frustrating. No game overs was nice at least.
Music: Cool spacey tunes, but unfortunately hampered by no music playing through half of the game. I'd win a battle and the music would just cut out entirely.
Story: Started off really cool, but I guess time got away from you and forced you to put in a M. Night Shyamalan-level twist that just made no sense.
Graphics: Dope all around. Did you make any of these sprites or are they all from elsewhere?
Comedy: Not much to go around.
Thank you for such an indepth review!
Sprites, both ship and harold, were made by others (though the plan was to make my own, at least through plenty of modification using these sprites as a base) I'd have to double-check for specific names :P (can't remember atm).
All the bugs will definitely be squashed if I can manage it >:)
I've learned half the jam experience is fixing those bugs and releasing that Definitive Edition.
It would be nice to see this idea fleshed out more in a future release! :)
Here's the VOD of when I played it (since I can't put comments on the main page):
Thanks!
And you can now place comments :P (I don't know why it was disabled)
Felt pretty pumped about the space theme, but I couldn't get the game to work well. I kept killing green ships but they wouldn't disappear and I couldn't seem to progress. Seems like it was at a very early dev stage.
Agree that it feels cool but technically not working properly.
I really liked the ideas but can only score based off of the (unfinished) state of the project.
I'd like to see this fully realized at some point!
Overall: I had a hard time (With my old lady eyes) seeing this game because I could not full screen, but it did look neat.
Gameplay: The controls were a bit slow, but the system wasn't too hard to figure out.
Music: Had a good vibe.
Story: Very Sci Fi, much space adventure.
Graphics: I really liked the look of the game. It fit it's theme nicely, even if it was far to small.
Comedy: Wasn't much from what I could see.
Fun little jam entry.
Do you know how to fullsceen Vx Ace games? (I really should have provided instructions I guess) Alt-Enter I believe does that If I remember correctly (I do it automatically so I forget at this point XD)
Thank you for all the kind words tho!
That would have been helpful! I have old lady eyes.
Interesting little title, but I had a bug where my ship disappeared. I feel with a little more work and story, it'd be something really fun.
Cool sci-fi theme! Unfinished as you mentioned already. Not sure if it was buggy for me but the enemy drones keeps disappearing and randomly reappearing on the map - sometimes spawning right on top of me triggering a battle. But anyway, sounds like still was a work in progress!
yeh, that was a glitch I knew about but didn't have time to fix. It was meant to be a pause in movement for the enemy drones after each battle, but I think in the newest drone version I messed up the graphics stuff.
This game has a good premises, but it seems the game is unfinished. When I reach some map, suddenly there is a summary about what might happen and some spoilers. I also found an NPC who will roll credit when interacted.
Well, I hope the dev would have a good rest and continue developing this game in the future.
Thanks for the feedback (and encouragement to rework this sometime).
Yeh, I really messed up my time management, i.e. not deving when I should have, so all that I got out was this unfinished thing. I'm glad at least that everybody thought the premise is interesting.
This was a cute and odd little title! I liked the theming of controlling little drones, and there was a bit of depth to the combat.
It felt a little short and I was a bit confused by the story. I actually am not certain I didn't take a wrong turn somewhere, the credits just suddenly kinda rolled.
Still, pretty neat entry!
Thanks for the kind words!
It's totally my fault for wasting earlier days in the month, then trying to rush it out the door on the last day XD. (This leading to loads of issues that any proper testing would find ':D ) Suffice it to say that the current state of this entry is far from any of my plans :P
