This was pretty awesome, man. I had issues with the fact my laptop struggled with framerate unfortunately, but think that's a me problem haha. Fantastic idea and execution, I really enjoyed the time I had, thought it was really well executed and fitted the whole theme perfectly. Definitely could maybe redesign the controls a bit, though cos of my laptop struggling and framerate dropping, obviously it just made the control system hard to operate, but that's not to say it doesn't work on a decent PC. Considering how short a time we had, I think this is incredibly impressive and definitely an idea well worth pursuing :D

Thanks! Awesome to hear that you liked it!

I also had an issue with the controls, like everyone else stated. :) I would have been ok with either WASD movement or maybe movement where the character always faces the mouse pointer, but rotating based on the mouse was a bit awkward.

I also tried with the controller, but it was just as awkward, if not more difficult to control.

I loved the music and overall theme of the game. I happen to be a huge fan of the Thief games, which this game might have some inspiration from I would say. ;)

I didn't quite understand how far the guards could see... I'm ok with not having clear cones of vision, but at least some indicator of how hidden I currently am would be good.

I think it's amazing that you found the time to make a tutorial within the bootcamp's timeline! You're definitely much more advanced than me at least. :D

Can't wait to see what you make of this.

Yeah Thief was definitely part of the inspiration haha.

I'll definitely improve visibility feedback one way or another once I've got more time to spend on the project.

Thanks for playing!

Digging this game and the lighthearted feel it has. The music is spot on and is helpful to get the player in a flow state where they're stealthing around, picking or dropping objects, and just exploring the game area. Aside from the controls breaking a bit that flow state, I think you've got something on your hands here and nailed your goal in the Adventurer track: the game is fun and well polished.

I won't beat around the bush too much with the controls since everyone has already said something. I did find two other issues. 1) Dropping items doesn't seem to always work, I have to hit the numbered keys multiple times until the item actually drops because a single press doesn't work. 2) I got stuck on the wooden platform leading into the castle, around the side. I seemed to have fallen into a hole that I couldn't get out of. That stopped my playthrough then after spending some time getting comfortable with the game's controls and rules.

Looking forward to further updates on this project! Do you plan on adding gamepad support? That would be amazing!

Developer(+1)

Oh bugs, exciting! The logic for dropping items prevents it in case of collision in front of the character. I'll patch that platform collision, thought that no longer happened, if there are no collision a single press should do it, I'll investigate it. Yes, gamepad will absolutely be supported, very straightforward to do too.

Fantastic idea and, as usual, incredible level design! The place really feels believable and inhabited. I also REALLY appreciated the lighthearted mood choice - stealth gameplay can easily become too tense, but the Fable-like vibe (greatly empowered by the music, but also by the relaxed / unrealistic interpretation of line of sight etc) made it appealing to me. I was also very curious about where the cult book would lead as soon as I saw it listed as an objective. Like: ok, the random objects robbery is just an initial layer of gameplay, but it's actually about uncovering some dark secrets and ending up in dark, creepy places! I can totally see this being developed into a commercial release. I had trouble with the tank controls too, especially because it doesn't feel like they added something specific to the gameplay and could be replaced by more traditional 8 directions control without losing anything - but this is the kind of stuff that is super easy to fix. At times I also had trouble with clarity of rules: can I go over a certain area, or does it count as being withing the torch's reach? In some other situation I thought I was stuck, having an object that appeared to be a key item within the radius of a torch, but hadn't been introduced yet to some way to handle that situation yet (probably easy to fix with an intermediary level design beat where I'm taught whether or not that can be handled with my current resources). Anyway, super cool idea and excellent vibe; I'd definitely play a refined version! Oh, also THANKS for the great feedback you left for other bootcampers - really appreciate it! <3

Developer

Awesome to hear, now I'm very curious about the situations where you weren't sure about the rules!. The controls feedback sure was a blind spot, as it works so smoothly for me,  but that tells me that I failed at following the recommendations and providing an earlier version where I could have found out about the pain point much earlier. I absolutely took it for granted that it was not an issue haha.

I love the look and sound of the game, but because of the weird controls, mainly using the mouse to aim the character, I couldn't even get passed the first room of the tutorial without getting too frustrated and giving up.

Developer

Oh wow, sorry you found the mouse rotation so frustrating. This never bothered me but seems pretty anonymous, will update it soon!

Congratulations on making your game! I really like the look of this and I think it is presented very well.

I'm with Darkgecko on the controls, using the mouse to rotate the character doesn't feel very intuitive and made it harder to control the character than it really should be, to the point where I gave up rather than struggling to make it through the level.

I think you've got a solid base here and I'd love to try again if you do change the controls!

Developer(+1)

Thanks, sure thing, changing the controls shouldn't take me too long!

I'll get this out of the way, the controls were infuriating.  It would feel more intuitive to use the keyboard for all directions since there was no mouse cursor to indicate my rotation value.

That aside, it was compelling gameplay.  Consistent look and a fun execution of concept.  This definitely seems like something worth pursuing.  I happen to like stealth games in general so it scratches a particular itch there.

Developer

Awesome! I had not realized the character rotation could such such a pain point, thanks.
