Hi,

Coca-Cola :D

Interesting controls for a desktop. At first it was a bit strange, but once you got used to it, it became quite interesting :). I think it would fit perfectly as a control for phones.

Regarding jumping, as a possible improvement, it would be nice to be able to not only increase the power of the jump, but also reduce it if you change your mind, for example, using the right mouse button, or when it reaches maximum power, it starts to decrease and so on cyclically.

Checkpoints are a good idea! They are located where you need them, taking into account the frequency of possible losses in different parts of the map.

Sound effects are also good, as are the graphics.

The Easter egg at the end was fun :).

I would like to see a little more innovation. Maybe add a level with an ocean or sea, in which fish swim, which can be caught similar to the points collected during the passage

It was fun playing as a polar bear. Congratulations!

This is a pretty fun entry, especially when playing on a phone or other touch screen device.

I made it all the way through although with quite a few tries. My main advice would be to make the collision box on the bear smaller so that it doesnt get hung so often on objects that you are trying to jump on or past.

Other than that I think the control scheme and overall feel is pretty good. It could definitely be refined more as with any jam game, but as it stands it works pretty well.

Control was a bit tricky to get used to at start, but once I got the hang of it it made me want to get better. I felt the flags were well placed since it allowed me to retry each section. It was satisfying to finish! I also liked the idea of having the instruction as part of the level (perhaps it could be styled to match the level). Not sure if polar bear matches the action type (I don't associate them with high jumps), but I guess it's festive!

this game was tough, i couldn't make the jump towards the first platform with collectibles for about 15 minutes. but then, i discovered its best to jump straight up to gain height and then move towards the platform as you are ascending/descending from the jump. once i got that figured out the game was pretty manageable,  i did manage to beat the game, although i would've heavily preferred arrow/wasd controls on pc.

Oh, touchscreen. That makes a lot of sense. It was quite tough for me using the mouse. Got to 45 thingies, but the last jump seemed impossible (as I would hit my head on an invisible wall). Quite the improvement since yesterday!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I wonder what could make it easier to use with mouse? Maybe I could put a different cursor in. The last jumps are really tricky, the hitbox on the bear is not great, but it would require a major rework to fix it and I didn't have time before the jam ended. To get out of the last tunnel I've found the most consistent way is to spam tiny jumps, basically tap frantically on the screen.

Great Game!
The controls of this game were fun and challenging.
I enjoyed playing this game more using a touch screen than I did playing with a mouse. The way the polar bear moves just feels great using handheld controls!

Developer

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that. I feel like the mobile market has a distinct lack of quality games and I always love finding new ways to use the touchscreen to make fun games.

I really like this one! The pixel art looks great and the controls feel really good which is hard for a game just using the mouse. A few small suggestions...

- You can setup your game on itchio to start automatically without needing the user to click run game. always good to remove barriers from the player.

- Put a little effort into your start screen. You already have some great art to use, just draw it big, like an animation of the player running. Instead of just Click to Start, make it say the name of your game "Polar Bear Jam". You can click to start smaller below that if you want, or put your name there instead.

- I like how it shows the text of how to play in game. You might even do that more by first bringing the player through some obstacles that dont require the super jump to get them used to that. Then show them how to use the super jump.

- Maybe add something to avoid? Thin ice you have to run over.

- Try adding something to the background. The easiest way is taking a look at the Sky object in the platformer example and tweaking it to suit your game

- There is a little texture bleeding in some of the sprites. There are a few ways t o fix that, the easiest is to setTileFixBleedScale(.5) which will crop half a pixel from around every sprite. Another better way is to add 1 pixel of padding around your sprites and use the padding setting of the tile function. The platformer demo was recently updated to include this. it's pretty minor though, just something you can fix if you want to..

Great work! You can always continue building it and adding more stuff to extend the level. I'll be keeping an eye on how it develops!

Developer

Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. I was wondering how to fix that texture bleeding, but I just had so much more to do before I came back to it. I am planning on adding a few more things to the game before I'm done, more level, better background, some particle effects :-) , and I'll work on making the start screen a little nicer.
BTW, it plays pretty well on touchscreen, give it a shot on your phone if you get a chance.
