Did you work in a team?
I did everything myself and from scratch.

Source code (plain C): github.com/TheStrupf/Lowrezjam22

Was the resolution a challenge?
It was difficult to balance sprite details and viewable gameplay area.

What did you learn?
I learned to cut nice-to-have features in favor of the core gameplay if necessary. Made a game which isn't a simple movement based platformer or top down shooter so it was interesting to work on rail based train movement including docking and undocking waggons without crashing anything.

This game took a while to understand and get into but once everything made sense it was fun and a real challenge. There also were some bugs where the cart would overlap crashing the game but all in all great entry.

Congratulations on making this game !

I've played your game during a live that you can watch here :

The live is timestamped so you can go directly to your game.

I hope the feedback and live reactions will be useful. Keep it up !

(don't hesitate to follow me on itch, twitter and youtube if you wanna help!)

Cute puzzle game. The challenge of properly orienting the train is a cool concept and it's done well. The visuals go together well, the train and the expressive particles look crisp. Overall good experience.

Great job!

Interesting pathing puzzler, it was neat how you had to think in advance to make sure you were facing the right direction. Funny how you could crash into trains with no permanent damage.  There was some lack of stakes due to the lack of failure state, but it was still a chill experience. The first time I tried to run this windows thought it was a virus, but otherwise it works great for a game coded outside of a major engine.

Wow, the miniature train sprites are so crisp-looking! Love the smoke effects as well! Gameplay wise, the game started showing its potential to me when I bumped into another train, causing its wagon to unhook! Love that kind of chain reaction stuff! Another person mentioned it’d be great to have full keyboard control over the game and I agree! Looking forward to playing this game again if you continue developing it after the jam. Shoutout for using C and shipping the source :)

Oh my gosh I was so hyped for this game. You did a phenomenal job with the ar and the music is really really good as well.

The core idea here is good, but with only one change of a few I think it could be even better. If there was a way I could play without using my mouse, that would be optimal, as trying to fiddle with onscreen buttons while attacking opposing trains and trying to race to get the cars they dropped can be frustrating. I think that optimally using something like HJKL or even just up and down arrow keys would be a better way to go with this. OR when you're no longer limited by the 64x64 screen size, you could do a further zoomed out game, where the the goal is more like speed of completion of levels where you don't have to deal with opposing trains at all. Overall I think the game is fun when I'm not struggling to find the other trains so I can steal their cars, and I think an improved control scheme would be in the games best interest.

Also just wanna reiterate that the music in this is great. Good gameplay, Great music. Fantastic job with the art, ESPECIALLY the 45s for the cars. No idea how you pulled that off. great job mate.

In regards to the comments you left on the jam page: I love that you tried to limit yourself in a new interesting way by using train movement. You did a great job, and your game is so close to being really really good. Hope you develop it more! (and zoom it out as soon as this jam is done, though please don't also upscale the art, it's fantastic.)

Edit: I'd also like to note that I am terrible at this game, so in case that matters.

Thank you for your feedback, really means a lot to me.

I really started to run out of time so there was no time left to implement different control schemes although that was definitely on my to-do list. Had a lot of ideas for this game which unfortunately had to be dropped because I had to commit a lot of time to bug fixing and smaller things but that's just how it is in a game jam. The camera view definitely was something I struggled with: Originally all my graphics were done in ~8x8 but I just had to rework them in 6x6 after some playtesting, but didn't want to go even smaller because I literally would have ended up  with pixel blobs only. Don't know when I continue to develop the game in the future because I want to dedicate my time to other projects first, but I still have something on my mind for that game, heh!

Also: I don't know anything about music at all, I just "randomly" cobble things together in Bosca Ceoil until it starts to sound less terrible. Personally I think that the music would be a much better fit for a shooter game but that's just my personal opinion.

I said this on the game page too, but this game is super clever! My favorite of the Jam so far!

I loved this game! A very fun gameplay. The art is beautiful and the game is very clean and polished. The music is really good and the SFX too. It's a little tricky to understand what's in front and what's behind the train, but nothing that compromises the gameplay too much.

Congratulations!

This is pretty great.  I have to agree with @slaintees about the viewport, but boy is this a nifty idea.  I love ramp up via the sort of lived-tutorial.  Feels polished and fun to puzzle through.  Very cool

Very nice puzzle experience… maybe the viewport is a bit tight which impacts your reaction times, but overall a very nice gaming experience. Great entry!

This is great! Some fun puzzles in there, also the tutorial is helpful in getting started.
