Did you work in a team?
We had a group of four people helping with various aspects from discussing design to making sprites to programming. It was an extremely fun experience!

Was the resolution a challenge?
Yes! We wanted to make a tactics game which traditionally has a lot of text on the screen to explain mechanics. Using text for most things was basically impossible so it forced us to keep our mechanics as cut-and-dry as possible. I still think there are a couple of menus that aren't completely intuitive, but we did our best.

What did you learn?
We had never completed a fully playable game before so we learned a lot. We became much more comfortable with the Godot engine and had to work through a lot of game design problems to get a fun core loop.

Congratulations on making this game !

I've played your game during a live that you can watch here :

The live is timestamped so you can go directly to your game.

I hope the feedback and live reactions will be useful. Keep it up !

This was great! It was super useful to see someone talk through their thoughts. For the record, the levels are randomly generated and that 3x necromancer spawn you got was brutal for depth 4 haha. I think we also fell into the classic trap of overtuning our game because we knew exactly how it worked. For example, the enemy AI is very simple and always attacks the closest character, so you can manipulate them to attack who you want which is very helpful. Subscribed to your channel, thanks!

Really neat game. It's interesting how you can use your units in different ways to work together, and choose upgrades to develop your own strategy. For my best run I had two paladins with extra health in the front tanking  hits, then an archer at the back with extra range/damage sniping all the enemies. The graphics are charming and the music is nice. The intro song is particularly enjoyable.

very sweet and simple little game

Very nice gameplay but I’d say the game is a bit unbalanced. The music is a great hit, did you guys compose and sing it? it’s a nice touch! Graphics are nice, quite readable in general though some sprites can be a bit messy for just too many individual color pixels. Very nice entry, congratz!

Developer

Unbalanced like it feels too difficult? We tried to dial it in so that you could make it to depth 6-7 pretty reliably. Definitely some random parties are stronger than others, lacking a wizard is definitely a handicap as once you put an attack item on him he becomes quite strong especially against crowded levels. Because the levels are randomly generated you can totally just get screwed by a tough roll though.

Yeah I wrote and recorded the title song. I sat down to just record some instrumental guitar music but started singing stuff about dungeons as a joke and we thought it was funny enough to put in, glad it seems to have gone over so well haha.

Thanks for the feedback!

Great job at fitting a lot of features in a tiny game! It was a bit punishing for my taste, but was fun experimenting and discovering the different enemy types/items as I got further.  Very nice!

If we didn't kill you quickly it would have given away that we ran out of enemies and items to throw at you! Thanks!

Forgot to play the game because I was too busy listening to the main menu song :P

I mean the gameplay and graphics are good too but the music won me over

Developer(+2)

Thank you our only regret is that we forgot to include frogs

A tactics game in it’s purest form, and one very well presented at that. Well done!

Developer

Thanks! We were surprised by how much mileage we were able to get out of such a simple ruleset.

Oh my gosh this is the best jam game I’ve ever played!

Personally I love tactics games, and have always wanted to make one for a jam, but felt that this would be too challenging to convey all the info that’s needed, as text seemed like a must for a clear tactics experience, but you all pulled it off so well that I’m inspired to try next year!

I have to say I had such a great distilled tactical experience, there was just enough to keep me going, and never too much to make it hard to continue playing, congrats on such a great, simple, and clear execution :D

The sprite worked was fun, and when I saw that necromancer raise the dude that died next to them I was so blown away - you all had some really fun stuff going on here.

Lastly your song is a fuckin’ masterpiece :D

I was just sitting here laughing and dancing, what a great entry, and a real source of joy - thanks for making this!

Developer

Wow thank you so much! The UI was definitely the hardest part, even with reducing everything down to the essentials there's still some obfuscation of the health bars for instance. Definitely give it a go next year!

Haha I'm so glad you liked the song, we thought it best if there was a warning about the perils of the dungeon.
