I played this already for far too long. It has a ton of replay value. There is also lots of variety with the different enemies and weapons. Further, the audio is great and enhances the overall feeling of the game.
I think there can be done some more work on the graphics. The ground looks a bit too scarce for my taste. Maybe some small rocks or puddles of dirty water work. I wish the katana animation would be more exciting.
Thanks for the feedback! Good call on the ground, I've already done some tests to make it more interesting.
I followed the progress on Twitter and I was mega excited to see the end-result. I have to say it was more fun than I expected and I replayed it a LOT.
5/5 right out of the door: polished, fun, challenging. Also the music, damn. :)
Thank you so much! Always great to overdeliver on expectations :)
Ah, so this is what this genre is like! I had fun with it. It was satisfying getting my weapons buffed to the max and seeing them melt through the enemies. Difficulty felt good to me, I was able to win on my third try. Very effective use of visuals, I stopped noticing that it was low resolution after just a little bit of time ingame.
Glad I was able to give to a good intro to the genre! :D
This was an absolute blast! I spent way too long playing this. I think the chits-to-difficulty ratio for katana felt like the best value to me, so I grinded quite a few katana runs.
Really impressed by the amount of polish in this game. The smooth performance despite tons of entities onscreen, the little sound of the chest hitting the ground when you open it, it all worked so well. Also I love the music. The bassline was great and I loved the way the sparse melody interacted with it. Awesome job, I played the hell out of this one!
Good job replicating the essence of vampire survivor with such limitations. Very addictive
Thanks! NGL, it was sometimes quite a challenge :)
Of course we all know by now how Vampire Survivor is addictive, so it works too here. Congrats on being able to fit this on such a small screen, and with a very cool. I must admit I would just have wished for a bit of a twist or surprise
Thanks for the feedback! Fell short on time for the innovation bits :)
It gets unexpectedly fun, especially when you max out everything. Very addictive.
I decided to stay fighting too long after the chopper arrived, to enjoy being ridiculously powerful and the sheer amount of stuff that was going on crashed the game/PICO-8 with an OUT OF MEMORY error. XD
looks like you found the secret ending! :D
Great job on the low res bullet heaven! I had a go at all the weapons. Am I just terrible at the katana?
thanks! The katana is really difficult unless you upgrade a lot of the meta stuff :)
Fun to play! The tension really goes up with time
Addicting! I loved the power ups and the music! The gameplay is also pretty smooth!
Thanks! Glad to hear I got you hooked :)
Not a fan of Vampire Survivors style games but this is a very nice and polished jam entry. Nice graphics, good sound and music.
Thanks, happy to hear you got something out of it despite not being your cup of tea :)
Very good, very addictive. But should be easier, I spent far too long getting to finish!!
Thanks for the feedback!
Which weapon did you use?
I tried them all but went with gun mostly. I'm just getting old! It was hard to see how much effect the upgrades had on each retry, but the upgrade loop was very addictive
Great job! I was most looking forward to playing your game as it was most similar to my own.
The UI is clean and juicy. Lots of abilities to choose from! Genuine fun.
Thanks! Happy to hear you like it. min gonna give your game whirl tomorrow, have seen a bunch of other survival games as well…
Overall, great surviver!
Good representative of the genre.
It's impressive that you managed to do so much in such a short time!
Thanks, happy to hear you think it lives up to some of the genre’s standards!
It might be two weeks only, but I had a lot of time available and spent it all :)
Its super impressive that you where able to fit such a good survivors like on pico-8. Art, sfx and music is great, and its a good collection of upgrades to choose from.
It would be nice if you could strafe by holding z or x, as the pistol and sword are pretty hard to hit with (but maybe that's the intent, since they are marked as higher difficulties).
Love it!
Thanks for the kind words! I’ve been using pico8 for a long time and have a few tricks to use I guess.
I wanted the higher challenges to require more of the player in terms of positioning and timing, and not just more power ups and build recipes. It also makes each weapon stand out I think.
Thanks again!
This is stupid fun to play!
I like a lot of things, so I'll just list them:
- Minimal learning curve (aka, I did not need to spend needless brain effort to have a great time, but still had meaningful decisions to make).
- You get thrown into the fun immediately.
- There is a persistent sense of progress despite the randomized intermediate upgrades - I presume that these get lost, though I did not pay enough attention to tell for sure.
- Seeing new (and scarier) enemies the more I progressed was great and kind of mind-blowing (just when I thought I was comfortable with which scary things would appear and how to handle them, new ones kept popping up).
- Props for the weapons being different for different difficulties - this was a great way to control the experience without making us feel stupider for trying the "easier" ones. For example, after I realised a katana was too much for me from the get-go, I switched to a gun which was still hard at first but satisfactory because I really liked how it plays out. You basically let me control the difficult-vs-coolness factor to what I was comfortable with, which was great.
Only recomendation is to maybe not make the chips and health bars continuous, e.g., split into rectangural blocks or icons to help understand what they are from the get-go.
thanks for the thoughtful response! Good to hear that you got a lot of the experiences I was aiming for.
Splitting up the bars in chunks is a good idea! Just difficult to do with so few pixels as I think we all know by now… :)
A+
🙏🏻
Great fun! I don't know if I'm elite enough yet to do katana mode
Thanks Ben! It’s a challenge for sure. I wouldn’t attempt it until at least half of the meta upgrades were almost full
