Very fun and cool aesthetics.  A few shorter tutorial esque levels to start out with would be nice and/or possibly making the shop have one time perma upgrades instead so it's a bit easier to go further out each time.   Currently it's sort of I'll just farm up some coins or memorize the entire map (possibly both) right off the bat.

Neat concept, but wish it felt a little less random trying to figure out which way you are supposed to go. Also music or sound would be very nice to have as well, even if they are very basic. Good job making a complete feeling game though, and I do like the graphics and controls!

Developer

thank you! Music etc is really not my skill set so it’s a struggle when I only have a few days to finish a project, but I hope to work on it with future games! Thank you for the feedback! Regarding the direction I really wanted to showcase that feeling of brutally hard retro games, no instructions or hints, I added a few aesthetic hints like signs to show the player places they had already visited and there’s things to discover through trial and error; such as a wall that looks slightly different being fake. I personally love eureka moments in games, where you finally figure out what you’re supposed to do, although I can see how easily that falls into the category of simply too frustrating.

Ah ok, very cool implementation there then! It def does give that brutally hard retro game vibe!

Turning the jam limitation into part of your games core mechanic is really impressive! Top marks from me there. I did like my time playing the game though I would perhaps like to see hearts spawn slightly more often. I did also have a bug with the up arrow key not functioning correctly but swapping to WASD meant that wasn't a big deal.

Developer

glad you enjoyed it and thank you for the feedback.
I often have the up arrow bug and forget to just remove arrow key support/fix it, I’ll work on that!

Hey! I just wanted to let you know this game is really neat but the start screen confused me. I spammed my keyboard until i found the right button.

Developer

haha sorry about that! I’ll update the game page to show the appropriate key, thank you!

For some reason moving up is broken for me, it just starts to move me and immediately stops. Also the window is pretty small. The art looks nice though, it reminds of undertale.

Developer (1 edit)

hi! If you use WASD that shouldn’t happen, I forgot to remove the bugged arrow keys before uploading. Thank you! The window is small right now due to the restrictions of the game jam but I should be updating that after voting ends. Thanks again for playing!

Actually the rules do say you can upscale it, you just have to upscale it such that it maintains hard pixel edges. Or does your engine just only let you scale it a maximum amount?

Developer

I've only really upscaled based on resolution scaling, thought the little window was cute! Plus can draw a little map in paint behind it as a  reference to help escape ;)

Nice ;D I love the 1bit art
