It took me a little while to understand the game, but once I got it, I found it intriguing. Keep it up!

Thanks for the positive review.

Cool game, at first I didn't understand what to do, but once I got it I had a good time with this. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the positive review.

Hey I met you on Discord! It was a really simple and understandable game to play, and I love that in a jam game. The colors and graphics were calming and simple. For constructive feedback I have three thoughts: 1) Give some user feedback to the click action, like the red button gets a little smaller and makes a "click" sound, just so you know when you pressed it, and I think the sound would help get the timing down. 2) Have a few boxes at the beginning that are extremely easy, to ease players in. 3) Consider putting an "ease" on the character's animation heading into and out of the box. It might help the player understand how much time they have to click. Overall a very nice entry!

Developer

Was not expecting suggestions for fixes, but thanks. The button may not return, but the other two could be helpful for future games. I need to understand the ease animation more though. I have the option, but I would have to understand why it's helpful.

Cool idea! It does require good reflexes if you’re not cheesing it! I would suggest making the whole screen clickable if there’s only one button :)

Actually, I was thinking that for the future. However, the button may fit the limitation better though maybe it could be argued taps for multiple things.

what / where is Meaning Abridged?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Ah yes, the game this is a prequel to. It's currently in my computer. I may upload it to itch.io eventually. Note: it could be considered less of a game and more an interactive art piece.

Developer(+1)

I uploaded the sequel: Meaning Abridged by Quantum Linux (itch.io)

Wow this one is really fun! I went in expecting a generic platformer but found something totally unique. I've never played a platformer like this before - I definitely think this is worth expanding some more!

Developer

Thanks for the positive review. I may do more expansion via other games, but time will tell.

Really like the aesthetic on this! cool music, colors, and visual effects – simple and not something that I’ve seen before. I had to do the clicking constantly thing to get anywhere, but – I am not known for my coordination. You mentioned that your games tend to have hidden meaning, so I’m curious what you can tell me about this one. (The best I’m coming up with is “You have to fit into boxes and have good timing to get somewhere in life” which does seem true, if a little depressing!)

Developer

I didn't mean all my art/games. However, the title did have Meaning Implied, so there could have been room for confusion. Let me explain myself. So, the game that's a sequel to this is Meaning Abridged which does deal with the meaning of life. The song I used is the same in both games which is called Finding Meaning in the Sky. So, one could say he is looking for Meaning in the sky, but he hasn't found it until the next game hence maybe implied as well as maybe being implied since the sequel deals with it. Also, I do sometimes make meaning even in my abstract works because sometimes I find things later, so I'll try that now (by the way what you came up is actually something I would have likely never thought of even though it can be true). So, in this game, he canonically he makes it first try and even if he didn't these things only get in his way, but he'll make it eventually (I didn't think about that for the void, but maybe it can apply). So, right there could be a message of perseverance and love since he's willing to do all this just to unite with his friend which can also relate the meaning of life as well. The cloud could maybe represent not letting stuff get in the way and the rectangle could be not letting stuff weigh us down. I don't know how to canonically explain the platform and the abilities for now.

I liked this game. I felt it was a little repetitive. But, that's not why I feel I need to comment. You used Google Web Designer? HOW? That's for WEBSITES. wow. seriously I do want to know and I'd love to hear how. If you have time could you check my game out?

Developer

I'll explain to some degree. It might be fairly simple. Basically, in the html pages you have, you can do animations. So, the animations you see are all done in Google Web Designer in terms of the movement. When it comes to the tap area for tapping at the right time, that's an animation too. There are different animation options, so the one for moving the tap area is step-end. So, after a period of time, the tap area goes to area of the button, stays there for 0.2 seconds, and then leaves. You can put stuff outside the canvas, and they can come into the canvas. The art comes from images which was made with Google Slides except for the ones that were done in Google Web Designer like the text and the rectangle. The music starts sometime after you click the first button (autoplay may be better, but that's something that hasn't worked properly yet from the times I tried). You can make things links, so when it comes to tapping the right time, it goes to the next page where it starts off looking the same even though it's technically different and it goes in an animation. With the start, that's usually a link to a specific page except on the actual page where it goes to the beginning of the animation. You can let me know if you want more detail, and I may respond. Also, did you finish the game quickly? I may check out your game.

I can tell you liked making your game. I've never gotten a respond so long! I never finished I think I came second to last. Maybe I'll finish it. It was really interesting to hear how. I've never heard of a person making a game with Google Web Designer. Is this your engine of choice or just a fun experiment? I want to hear how you chose this "engine" if you'd call it that. Thanks for the quick response!

Developer (1 edit)

You're welcome. Currently. it's my engine of choice, if it could even be called that (it's not intended for making games, but it has that capability). As to how I got to it, I may not remember all the details despite it being recent, but here goes. Background context I used Google Web Designer a while back. I used it for some 3D animations. It stopped working for 3D as I wanted one day, and I stopped using it. Fast forward to this year, I was making games. I made games before, but this might have been a bit different. I used Batari Basic to make Atari games. I might have been content to stay making Atari games, but then came GMTK game jam. I made an Atari game, and long story short for some reason I decided I was going to move on. I was thinking about GB Studio, but that didn't work for me. Now some time ago, I installed Google Web Designer for making some animations or something (I did uninstall but then I installed it again at some point). I didn't really want to get into the big game engines potentially due at least in some part to being lazy and wanting easier and simpler things or something like that. I don't exactly remember how I figured it out that it could be used, but I did. I was thinking about the Major Game Jam theme before it started, and I came up with a game to make (not this one, but rather its sequel). I might have focused on more on getting it down as well as making it more like art rather than game or something like that. I made that one, and I decided to use it again for this game jam.

Nice! I participated in the gmtk too! Could you tell me the name of your game jam game? Mine was Better Cluck Next Time. Go check it out if you want!

Developer

Sure, but you may not like it. It's called Platformer but you're the platform. Here's the link: Platformer but you're the platform by Quantum Linux (itch.io)
