This is great fun, I've played through a few times already! The designs for everything are great but I especially like how the scrolling background all comes together. Controls felt great and I would happily play through more waves. I think I saw you at the festival today and was going to come say hi and chat about your game, but I'm a bit too awkward because I wasn't certain 😅

Developer

Thank you so much for playing it, I think it was a bit difficult to approach me as I had my kids with me as well and I am a bit socially awkward myself haha. I am thinking about making a full version of the game with more waves and some sections instead of waves to give it more of a SHMUP feel.

If you still want to talk feel free to hit me up on discord!

The presentation is superb, though there are a lot of issues. The game was too easy because none of the enemies moved and the player's shield should've only replenished through upgrades, plus the game don't scale to fit full screen. It would also be nice if in the web build the Exit Game option made the user go back a page or if none is available close the tab.

Developer(+1)

Yeah, I agree there could have been a lot more done to take the game to the next level. I didn't keep in mind people would have actually tried to fit to full screen and should have probably tested that prior.

It's actually a good idea that exit game should have returned to the previous page it didn't come to mind at all to program something like that.

I honestly think I should have kept in mind that it was obviously gonna be an HTML5 build and program it as a Web Game instead of a PC game.

I hope the game was still enjoyable though and thank you for trying it out!

I absolutely love the thumbnail!!!

Not Jam really pulled the NES cardridge feel off! Kudos to him!

Amazing shmup! Really dig the way you handled selecting upgrades. Only bit of feedback I have is that I'd love to see some camera shake to amp up the game feel a touch as a future update.

Awesome work either way! :D

Developer(+1)

I would add a lot more juice and camera shake is definitely one of the things on the list.

Nice one! Looking forward to it. :)

This game is awesome!
Having the game be waved-based with choosing your upgrades really elevates it so much! It was super enjoyable having certain builds on each run and seeing how they play.

There isn't much criticism I can give, it's very polished and I love the art! It would help to have audio or visual feedback from being hit, and I would love to see a score screen once you lose, but that doesn't take away from the experience at all and it's so fun!

Developer

Wow, you just made me realise I completely forgot to add the sound for getting hit haha.

There is a lot of juice lacking in my opinion I wish I could have found the motivation to work on it a bit more.

I am super happy you enjoyed the game thanks a lot!

Loved this game, especially the upgrades system giving it a roguelike feel!

Just a couple of issues I ran into:

  • I didn't realise you had to hold down space so I was pressing it and firing slowly.
  • The projectiles coming straight down and firing straight up means you end up just skirting them and firing back while safe rather than weaving around. Might be worth considering having projectiles move in different patterns in the future, like in a wave or something?

One of my favourite games of the jam though, really great experience and the polish, art, and everything was fantastic!

Honestly I agree it's not what it could have been I probably should have dabbled into a genre I have more experience playing myself.

Tutorials have never really been my strong suit and I always struggle to properly relay instructions sometimes.

If I had some more time I probably would have taken the time to create some more interesting bullet patterns and balanced it a lot more.

Thank you for playing and your review!

It was great if you didn't have experience it doesn't come across that way and within the time frame, it's really impressive work!

Regarding the space bar that'll just be something minor like the difference between "on press" or "on release" or a timing thing or something similar, not a big deal at all just something to note; it's not a tutorial issue, per se,  just like a tiny tiny bug as if you try repeatedly tapping the space bar, instead of holding it, there's like a delay/cooldown on when you fire.

Hope that makes sense!

Developer

Rushed programming creates little bugs like that haha.

I'll have to look into that and you could very well be correct.

There are some more bugs in there that could have been avoided if I spend a bit more time on it but so is the nature of a game jam.

Thanks again!

Really fun and polished game, great job! I love the art + animation for the ship and the side bar art - super nice.

The shop menu selecting is really creative and I love the visual changes of the gun upgrades, really makes it obvious that you're more powerful.

I wish your thumbnail showed off some of the great art in your game! It's one of the nicest looking games in the jam so it would really stand out if it was in the thumbnail.

A death screen would be nice too, I died and instantly restarted because I was already pressing spacebar which was a little jarring.

It was also cool to see all your progress in the discord! Looking forward to seeing your future projects :)

Developer

Thank you for your kind words.

We created all the assets ourself so any compliments on the visuals are very much appreciated.

There is a death screen but it will instantly loop to the main menu due to a silly programming error. If I had some more time there would definitely be a lot more polish. It's kind of buggy here and there and I would have liked some more juice.

I agree the thumbnail could have probably had some more game assets in it. I also mentioned this to my friend Not Jam.

Anyways thanks again!
