Description
The soundtrack of my OST is completley chiptune, specifically, NES chiptune. It was composed for a sad RPG/Puzzle game demo about dreaming and reality. I used the "DAW" called FamiStudio, with a bit of FamiTracker for original note layout, along with Audacity for processing samples. Each track represents a different phase in the game, from start-up, to the boss. I also used some royalty-free samples from various sources (i'm not kidding when i say this, but one of of the samples here is a heavily distorted vine boom, which was made when i tried to make a punchy kick drum for another project).

Message from the artist
If you want to use my work, just ask. This is my first time doing something so cool, so I'll be happy with any place. I'm not Mozart.

please enjoy.

Theme

Inside my world
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The theme inside my world could have the world being a very lucid dream, which I built on.

In the picture, I see the strange beauty of a dream: Nothing really ever makes sense at all (hence the reason why one of the bosses is literally a pig boy).

A fun listen! Can definitely hear this being in an NES game. Also, the vine boom thing is hilarious.

I think the soundtrack overall could've benefited from more motion overall. Chiptune really needs it to make up for the lack of voices and depth of simple waveforms.

Nice work!

Yoo-hoo! It's idea man time that made a real chiptune with the proper tools!

Wondorus World - Heh, I've definitely heard that menu in some obscure 8-bit game

A Bed of Flowers - Time for bed?

Sweet Motherly Lullaby - It was... sad? It's like I heard the intro to something important and emotional.

La maison petite dans le foret - Heh, I love that pitch change in the track. The slight breakdown is interesting too)

Little People - ♩ Little people, Voodoo people ♩

All Together Now! - ♩One, two, three, four. Can I have a little more? Five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten. I love you♩

eyes... - Something definitely creepy. Is someone looking at me?

Percy the Piggy Boy Draws Near! - Hey, this one rocks! It's like I'm listening to an 8-bit version of a System Of A Down song.

Another day... - Life, routine. Somebody's story is ending and somebody else's is just beginning!

fallen - GAME OVER

Overall - I liked it!

Awesome, another tracker submission. Chiptune music is no joke to make, major respect to those that fully commit to the process.

I think there's definitely some neat ideas in here. Nice articulation of voicings to keep things varied - vibrato seems a little intense in some instances but the change-up was appreciated. I feel like some of the pieces could've done with a couple of more counter melodies on another waveshape or traded off sections accordingly as sometimes the arrangement can feel just a little sparse.

All in all, good work - I can see what you were going for and I think this is a great jumping off point. I like how you put the effort in to include percussion and SFX utilizing the noise channel and I think that is something that could benefit the pieces overall; a good rhythm line going, even if it it is a grounding kick, off-beat snare or rolling hihat line, goes a long way to adding some life to tracks. Solid submission for your first jam entry - I wish you the best. :)

this wasn't made in a tracker. this was made in famistudio.

i'm sorry i'm a fake. /j(famistudio does emulate an NES)

on a more serious note, thanks for the advice! it's my first time releasing a chiptune album to the world and i was expecting everyone to hate it and remind me why i shouldn't be a musician. i'll keep this in mind next time! Thank you!

Impressive amount of ideas! You’ve created a really nice sense of story-arch here and you’ve got a good understanding of chiptune soundworlds. You could add more to the tracks, like others have picked up on, but it doesn’t have to be loads of new musical ideas - you can create variations of your existing material or a subtle pattern to add more depth, as you’ve got lots of ideas here already :)

Really good ideas! It could really help the composition to flesh out the tracks a bit more. Even going all in with the use of the noise channel could be good. Because listening to the tracks, you made really competent use of it in the sound design.

It`s a good idea to make a soundtrack within such a complex specific genre. The melodies are interesting, the basis is good! But the arrangement is still lacking, tracks feel a bit empty. I think with a bit of background arpegios or additional melodies those track will be great!

Developer

any tips? i tried to add more, but it ended up screwing everything up. i used famistudio with the vrc6 expansion (adds two more square waves and a SAW)

Unfortunately don`t have much expirience in those chiptune and 8-bit genres. Made couple demos for interest, and that`s all. And not in the proper DAW =)

I'm glad to finally find someone else who used Famistudio!  I was starting to think I was the only one.  Great job on the soundtrack, I liked Wonderous World of Dreams the best!

Developer

really like where you went with your soundtrack! do you have any tips for a practical newbie?

Start out by doing covers - just remake NES songs you like as closely as you can.  Not only is it a good way to learn how to actually use Famistudio, but you'll pick up on different ways to use the different channels.  One example - I never would have thought to use a triangle wave as part of a drum without hearing it first.  Note that Famistudio also comes with a ton of sample files that are actual NES music pieces that you can take apart, mess with, and learn from.

For channels, the usual setup is for the main melody to be on Pulse 1.  Use  Pulse 2 for harmony with Pulse 1.  Each pulse channel duty cycle has its own characteristics that you'll get used to the more you experiment.  The Triangle wave channel is usually your base and the Noise channel is the drums (Note: the Duty Cycle also affects the sound of the Noise channel so play around with it!.)  DPCM is most often used for drums as well.  You'll want to watch the tutorials on those - they're a game changer!  Once you know the basic rules of each channel, you can start messing with them and using them for other things, such as Triangle for melody and a Pulse for the bass!

Speaking of tutorials, the Famistudio tutorials are also extremely detailed and worth a watch.  I watched them after I made my first soundtrack and still learned a ton.  Things can actually get quite complicated when it comes to creating instruments - I'm still learning that part myself.

If you want to change your songs tempo (BPM,) click the gear icon next to the song's title on the song list in the upper right.  Click the BPM dropdown and select a new BPM.  If the BPM has a star (*) next to it, it is an "Ideal Tempo," which means the notes will be perfectly divided and nothing will get messed up. (It took me forever to figure out how to change tempo in this thing lol)

If your melody sounds too grating or "tinny," try decreasing the volume on the channel.  You can do that by clicking the VERY small arrow next to the magnet icon right below your channel list.  This brings up your channel effects.  Click the "Volume" button.  Then, to the right, click in the timeline where you want to change the volume.  Drag it up or down to where you want it.  This has solved the problem 9/10 times for me, unless there is just something fundamentally wrong with the piece.  There are other effects you can put in as well.

That's about all the good tips I can think of off the top of my head.  If there's anything I did in my soundtrack that you'd like described in detail, feel free to reach out to me on Discord!  (Discord name: "ayback")

I find it always interesting to see a composition with the limitations of the older hardware in mind. While there were some interesting idears in there, I found them quite to short for my taste. I don't know if it was for the authenticity, but I would love to hear one of your idears in a longer format to let it soake in more and hear some evolvment. Nether the less it is a cool soundtrack.

i thought i was going to get dogged on. guess not.

also, thanks for the advice. i'll keep it in mind next time i try this

also, yes, i was using famistudio, the closest you can get to a NES DAW without it just being a tracker

I think a good way to improve a lot of these tracks would be to add more into them. they feel really empty as is when there a lot of unused instruments in each track that could add a lot of depth.

Developer (1 edit)

f**k, i knew i should've added way more.

then again, every time i tried to add something cool, it just ruined everything (it's not easy to make good music for the NES, even with the VRC6 expansion)

Yeah working with chiptune stuff is annoying at least to me.
