Description
I used Musescore 4. I have a background in classical music, so I wanted to create an orchestral piece, and imagined a story-based game with drama.

Theme

Chronicles of the Azure Sky: The White Dragon's Melody
Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
Both the title and the dragon reminded me of Chinese folklore and mythology, and used traditional chinese music as inspiration.

i swore i commented on this when i rated! anyways, this was one of my favorite submissions in this jam!!! "forged in raging thunder" is absolutely a fitting title for the pure electric energy that track has. it's a genuine feat to make something that exciting in such a short time period

The strong Chinese theme was pleasant and enjoyable. Simple but functional.

The Chinese feel was thick in these songs and they were very nice! Great job

This is great stuff. I love the instrumental choice and the scale truly gives off east asian dragon vibes. The fact that you were able to make 2 tracks after how complex the first one is is impressive. Some strings feel kinda robotic (which also happens to me lol), and some high fqs could be controlled  but that's just MIDI samples and with little to no time this is absolutely fantastic! Loved when you introduced the flute on track 1<3

Thank you for the critique! I definitely agree and a lot of it was due to time constraints. Although I'd love to use real acoustic instruments, I am poor so perhaps I'll try experimenting with other programs or playing around with reverb and what not. I appreciate the comment!

Hey, you got a couple goosebumps out of me on 1:37 on your first track and on the second one. I love that you also used Chinese elements.

I would love to hear this on live instruments. Heh... I think I knew I'd like yours when I saw your cover art too, where it's solid dragon iconography.

Very lovely work. Only critique is just that virtual instruments tend to sound like virtual instruments. A solid reverb can really do wonders for making virtual instruments sound more natural. My favorite is neoverb for its general clarity and control, like I don't have to futz with it too much to get really solid, clear, clean reverbs.

I appreciate the critique! I will admit I was pretty frustrated at how robotic the instruments sounded at times, and the idea of reverb never came to me. I'll try experimenting with that in the future. Thanks for the comment!

One relatively low-cost thing you can do is find a decent budget microphone and a DAC, and add vocals as well. It's also a great way to blend the virtual instruments together. A good microphone is the Shure SM-57, since they've been used in everything for like half a century, they're very durable, and the sound is accurate. More expensive microphones color the sound in interesting ways, but having one that is very accurate lets post-processing programs have something to work with.

Choosing which instruments are virtual and which are real also helps. All of the instruments in my track are real, but with the drum, I found a large but modestly priced frame drum. I then used a pitch modulation plugin to shift its tone to provide a drone.

Another thing that can help tremendously is a midi controller when your virtual instruments have dynamics, so that you can do the velocity naturally.

Those are, in my opinion, some of the highest impact things you can do to provide some sound quality to your base setup.

Ohh I see! Thanks for the advice!

This is super unique! I like how you decided to make the 2 tracks completely opposed in feeling, so you can demonstrate two sides of the ost. Awesome!

Beautiful melodies and rhythmic lines. Great job. You really captured the ethnic essence of the theme

Forged in Raging Thunder - I like how the bass stays on the 1 for the first half with lots of energy, and then how the harmony evolves in the second half.

Survivor of War - the Chinese inspiration is felt more here. Love the high keys playing over everything, they fit in very well. Very pretty track!

Really good production on these!

Both of these are so cool! I really like "Forged in Raging Thunder" (especially the climax around 1:30) - really good balance between melody and driving rhythm
