Description
# tracks: 2
Total Runtime: ~2:22

DAW: REAPER
Libraries: Metropolis Ark (strings, brass), Modern Scoring Strings (string bass), Oceania II (choir), Phoenix Orchestra (Chinese instruments)

Type of game: action/adventure rpg

Inspiration: I am very inspired by the Sekiro soundtrack, but have never tried writing in that style. After seeing the theme picture, my goal for this jam was to learn a bit about that style and try to incorporate that into a song. Another huge inspiration behind the concept was the Sunwarriors episode from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Process: Progression w/ internal melody -> main melody -> arrange -> instrument selection -> orchestration -> leveling -> my sad attempt at mixing

Message from the artist
Hi, thank you for listening!! This is my first jam submission ever! I'm super nervous and self-conscious ahahaha. Wasn't able to finish everything I wanted, but still learned a lot, and had tons of fun!

I've messed around with using orchestral elements within a metal mix for quite a while, but decided to seriously learn about soundtrack this March. I'm a super beginner at this style of composition (and also general start-to-finish music production), so please let me know what you think! A would be super appreciative of any feedback.

Theme

Picture theme

How does it fit the theme?
The picture made me think of an action/adventure RPG taking place in a war-torn land in which dragons are revered and feared as gods. We would play as character seeking to either confront or beseech wisdom from a dragon.

I imagined "Divine Descent" as music playing throughout the player's encounter with a dragon, and "Wandering" as a theme to play while traversing through the world.

The dual themes in "Divine Descent" were meant to mirror the nature of dragons (graceful with a gentle heart; ferocious). I wanted both melodies to feel elegant, soaring, and almost distant as the dragon and the player converge.

"Wandering" shares the first theme, as it is played when showing "the gentle heart of the land." I was working on a battle them incorporating the second theme, but won't finish in time :(((

Just as I start listening I already love the arrangement, I need to get myself some eastern instruments, but then again, one is always hungering for more VSTS and what not (: What an epic build up in the first track, Mix sounds fine to me ear, nothing really off-putting stands out.

Impressive composition, lots of going on, but never feels chaotic, it all flows together well, the different elements complimenting each other nicely. I believe this is why the mix works well, despite your lack of faith in it. ;) If the composition and arrangement is good, most of the mixing is essentially done for you, at least in orchestral music I find it.

omg!!! the chorus on divine descent is amazing. absolutely loved the dissonance used towards the energetic climax there. i read your description and you made yourself sound like an amateur but i can 100% hear so much talent and experience in your end product. be proud of what you made!! it's amazing!!

The eastern dragon vibe is such a cool one. The way you composed it really adds a sense of grandiose foreboding which makes it feel like a grand storm dragon is approaching. Sounds like the leadup to a major boss fight. I like it!

Thank you so much!! Really glad you enjoyed it, and thanks for the feedback!

I love the asian instrumentation. A lot of us added chinese instruments to western epic orchestral elements to  represent the ethnic nature of dragons, but this is THE most east asian music heavily inspired track I've heard so far and it almost sounds traditional and folkloric! i love it<3

Developer

Thank you so much, I take that as a huge compliment! I'm very glad you liked it! Yeah I actually quite enjoy listening to traditional East Asian music, and put a playlist with that genre on pretty regularly

Divine Descent: Eastern instruments help connect it to the theme! Gives me a grand boss battle vs. a dragon kind of vibe.

Wandering: Love that percussion. Only thing is it feels like it ends a little abruptly. This track is definitely one of my favorites in terms of matching the theme!

Great work, perfect match on the theme for me!

Developer

Wow thank you so much for the great feedback!! Thanks for listening, and I'm glad you liked it!

This is great, very dramatic and the chinese instruments are a super cool inclusion. The percussion in divine descent is super intense, and I love how textural wandering is, it feels super vibey. Great work, I really liked it!

Very atmospheric! You did really well with the Sekiro style. I just wish they were a bit longer

Developer

Thank you!! Ahh yeah I wish I was able to make them longer too, but ran out of time to work - definitely need to work on production speed. Glad you liked it, and thanks for listening!

Great instrumentation and great soundtrack overall ! The compositions are quite enjoyable, the instruments have a lot of space to breathe (in other words the mix is well done) and I liked the progression on the Divine Descent track a lot. Congrats !

These tracks feel the most cultural of any I have listened to so far and that is really cool. I do think they are a bit too similar though.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I'll work on it and come back better :)

Great job mate! Both the songs are so distinct yet also on theme the whole time! Loved the usage of the ethnic instruments, which really gives off the oriental vibe. Really how powerful Divine Decent is!

Thanks so much!!

These are great tracks, the mix is very clean! I didn't find them to be all that distinct from each other though.
