Description
Forgotten Gods is a game which follows a young woman who stumbles upon a dilapidated, abandoned temple overgrown with moss and roots. As she ventures inside, she discovers the white dragon deity that had been long forgotten by a society that moved towards industrialism. The game follows the progress of their relationship, as she attempts to befriend a distrustful, heartbroken god.
I used Reaper to record the midi files and then used Spitfire LABS for all of the sounds used.
1. An Ancient Grief (Main Theme)
This is the main theme + title screen track, capturing a sense of the Gods' grief at being abandoned.
2. Awakening (Inside the Temple Core) (LOOPABLE THEME)
As she ventures inside the temple core, she realizes there is something grand that lies below the ancient stone.
3. A Dying God (Collapsed Lung)
On a ride through the sky, the white dragon deity is gravely injured, causing both of you to hurdle towards the forest. Both injured, you caress him, and notice the lethality of his wound. This solemn piano piece captures the heartbreak of the moment, and yet is a final testament to the beauty of this journey. A gentle smile arises-- he was honored to have been loved, one final time.
The title, Collapsed Lung, refers both to the injury and the Chinese word for the mythical dragon presented in the game. After beating the game and returning to the title screen, this song replaces the main theme.
Message from the artist
This is my first OST jam!!! It was awesome
Theme
How does it fit the theme?
The picture and theme, to me, captured a soulful connection between the protagonist and dragon, as well as a deep respect for a forgotten deity who represents nature. The themes and aesthetics of Princess Mononoke came to mind, and Joe Hisaishi was a huge inspiration for the composition. This soundtrack uses a mix of ambient and orchestral instruments to evoke the serenity, reverence, and gravity of a forgotten nature, and the dragon deity who represents it. I wanted there to be a mix between grief, respect, and the feeling of reawakening a sacred past.

Very soothing and emotional. A nice change of pace. The third track is especially beautiful to my ears. I often feel that writing those really heartwrenching pieces are actually the most difficult to pull off, so kudos!
really nice works.
Beautiful! This feels super melancholic, and I absolutely love it! I especially liked A Dying God and the string swells you included.
Really good calm, melancholic soundtrack! Well done. Almost heal the soul^^
An Ancient Grief: Soothing! Great ambient work.
Awakening: That classic LABS piano.
A Dying God: This is my favorite of the three. Reminds me of Hollow Knight. Those strings sound so good with lots of expression. Great composition!
ah thank you for saying it reminded you of hollow knight!! what a compliment
I'm loving the organ chords they are so rich in texture! I wish you had used them more since they stand out a lot compared to the solo piano!
Really nice tracks all in all!
organ is one of my favorite instruments since it's so rich and great at evoking sacredness :') that track is honestly the one i regret the most because although i like it, i wish i had done a lot more to polish and switch it up. thank you for your kind words and feedback! <3
Really nice track! I enjoyed the atmospheric, mystic, and emotional feeling that you created with each piece! The piano and instrumentalization in general were great! :)
Great selection of tracks ! The whole selection is quite moody (which is very enjoyable), and the choice of instrumentation is pretty nice.
The Labs collection of instruments works really well for more atmospheric tracks like these (a bit less for faster paced tracks unfortunately due to the generally slow attack of the instruments, maybe it has been a factor in the nature of the tracks), so I can also recommend the free BBC Symphony Orchestra Discover (also by Spitfire) if you want to have other quality orchestral instruments for faster orchestral tracks.
Anyway I enjoyed your tracks a lot, so congrats for your work !
thank you!! yeah, LABS has amazing sound quality but there's a pretty slow attack on the string instruments, even when putting the attack all the way to 0. i gotta work with the BBC one more, it'd be nicer to have faster attack but i find that the strings sound a little bit cheesy when i use them-- maybe i just need to arrange better tbh. thank you again for your kind words <3
Those ambient textures on the first piece are really cool, I frankly feel jealous as hell that I didn't think to do that. Can I ask what methods you used to get those specific textures?
That aside, I liked the organs on the second track, but it felt like the frequency buildup in the low mids was really aggressive, just a quick reduction of a couple db in like the 80-140hz range (I did a quick and dirty check and that seemed to feel about right maybe?). Also you might get some decent results by carving out some space somewhere in the spectrum for the piano to come out more, and might get really nice results by putting a super subtle chorus on the organ, because rn it feels kind of mono. Take these suggestions with a huge grain of salt, bc I kind of mix to my own tastes and don't use organ super often, so these suggestions may or may not be something you want in your mix.
Also, whatever programming you did for those strings in the third piece sounds great, super killing it. The piano sounds great as well, the composition as a whole feels super emotive and I really like it.
I hope I didn't come off as negative at all, it just takes a lot of words to describe this mix stuff and way less to say that what you made sounds super beautiful and I really enjoyed it!
i would like to say i did some crazy complicated technique for the texture but i just used a mixture of some pads/synths from spitfire LABS :') i believe the primary one that gives it some texture is the "arctic swells" plugin pack-- it uses a blend of violin and a native american flute.
thank you for the feedback on the organ piece! it's def the track that i regret the most in regards to its lack of polishing. i kept trying to balance things in a way that sounded good but alas i am an amateur and didn't have enough time :( i honestly was struggling for most of the jam just to even write the actual song, so proper mixing was really far off for me. its something i genuinely don't know much about and am hoping to learn a little bit more about, at least at a rudimentary level so i can do better in the next jam :)
i honestly really appreciate constructive criticism because 1. it shows you actually did listen to my pieces and formed your own thoughts about it 2. criticism is just as, if not more valuable than compliments in helping me refine my techniques as a composer <3
Very peaceful and relaxing. Excellent work!
Great work :D the tracks are really relaxing and beautiful, i love them!
these were so peaceful i almost forgot i was listening to them, great work :)
Great job on A Dying God. Beautiful piano piece definitely my favorite out of them all.
you can reeally feel the sorrow in these I love it. Also great job in developing a story and linking it to the themes
I REALLY like that piano ostinato in Awakening, it's so pensive and melancholic when combines with the organ! (reminds me of ICO or Final Fantasy 8)
Also the fact that you crafted a narrative across all your tracks is really creative and added a lot of meaning. The Dying God's pentatonic melodies and use of 4ths reminds me of Japanese folk music, I'm also a HUGE fan of this and when the strings kicked in... UUUUGHH SO PRETTY! Great work on these :)
thank you so much!! your tracks were one of my favorites so i'm honored to have you compliment mine :') i'm SUCH a big fan of 4ths and parallel intervals so thank you for noticing!!
I really like how your pieces captured the sense of grief. Good job!
Very beautiful pieces! The piano especially
I think the compositions were really good quality and I like that you used and organ which was pretty creative
