This game is awesome!

The hotline miami style is well rendered and the action is intense.

However, it really needs balancing ^^
The fact that your capacities cost you life in a game where you constantly take damage is really harsh.
Healing yourself on ennemies is cool but could be stronger.

Last but not least, I find the combat a little junky. It seems that you need to be close to an ennemy to trigger your punch which often results in you turning around an opponent without doing anything.

If you tweak it a little, I am sure that awesome submission will be an even greater game!

The style with the graphics and the music is really cool. I had fun trying this out in several runs and testing how far I could get.  The game is hard, but that's not the problem, I like it.

However, some things seem a bit unfair, like the penalty of the special moves, it's too high in my opinion. Often there is also no real chance to attack the opponent from behind, then the only thing you can do is to run away.

Sometimes the movement near obstacles (cars) was also a bit choppy.

Developer

I was surprised that you liked the music, because due to lack of time we just used one of my old tracks (I literally made it a 13 years old :D)

It's way better than anything I could do and it fits the game well :)

Very fun & satisfying game. The brutal difficulty, "die and you restart" gives me some NES nostalgia.

I definitely want to try out a more polished version, if you plan on continuing work. I enjoy the brutal difficulty a lot. Some advice: it would be a lot nicer to give the players a bit more incentive. Better abilities, heal on kill instead of constantly losing health from everything, prevent the player from using abilities if the cost is higher than their HP, etc.

As someone who loves hotline miami, this was quite cool to play. You nailed the satisfying part of punching someones' head off, the movement feels just right and the art is quite good and clear.

I have a lot of things to say about it, but to be honest this is mainly because i liked it enough to play for more than half an hour.

I think it could be fine to use life as a cost for abilities, but you would have to make it very clear how much life we have left and what we can use without dying.

Also, the fact that we can only hurt ennemies from the back when full HP coupled with the seemingly perfect tracking of ennemy AI means that being full HP in a fight makes you basically useless until you get hit.

For example the first 3 ennemies, either i wanna be able to dash behind them and attack quickly from behind, or i want to be able to punch them from the front, but right now it just feels like punching and dodging randomly until they somehow die...

The katana ennemies also feel like rng, maybe they could have some opening when we evade their charge, because right now the best strategy i found is spamming attack and praying, or a well timed smoke but the timing is awfully tight.

One thing that adds to their difficulty is the static camera. One of the big strength of hotline miami is how much it lets you plan ahead and observe before everything goes to shit, meanwhile in this game it felt like i had to memorize every timing by heart to survive off screen ennemies charging at me.

Ennemy placement seems to force a bit too much head on engagements, once again emphasizing the other problems.

Now i wanna talk about some more minor stuff, just in case some flew under your radar. The invisibility ability feels like it's supposed to be a panick button, but the high cost means you can only use it when everything is still fine (or is it just a "skip part of the level" button?).

When climbing the ladder i get stuck for like one second, and every time it's enough to get me killed so i couldn't see what was over there.

Sometimes ennemies don't aggro, seems to mainly happen to the flashlight guy in the top right corner.

I don't know if this is because of the i mentionned above or if he has too much health, but i didn't manage to kill the shotgun guy after tens of tries.

The crossbow ennemies deserve to have some kind of visual indication when they fire, would make big fights more easy to keep track of.

The shadow mechanic seems promising, maybe it could affect movement speed, attack power, or just buff abilities.

Also, it could be interesting to throw bodies like weapons in hotline, but maybe this would ruin the melee only vampire experience idk.

Overall this was enjoyable, and really damn impressive for a 50h game, but my experience has been held back by all those things. I'm sure a lot of it just comes down to a lack of time, but i hope at least one of my comments was useful to you.

Wow O_O, half an hour (even I don't spend so much messing around with my prototypes)

Now we are slowly polishing this masterpiece, so, thanks for such a big feedback

P.S.: It was quite fun to read

Wow, what a ride! As some others have pointed out, the game is very difficult due to a lack of knowledge of how much HP the player has. Also, having to invest HP in order to perform special moves adds to the problem.

I'd suggest introducing a separate resource to draw from to perform special moves as well as the ability to heal (maybe by drinking blood from fallen enemies). Because all in all, I'd love to be able to explore the levels you've built, but the difficulty is too high for me currently.

Jam Host

I am truly impressed by what you have achieved in just 50 hours! I'm personally not a big fan of pixel art, but the style really suits the game.

The game itself is really difficult, or maybe I just suck? Took me really long to actually figure out I can attack enemies, but I am still not sure how the attack works..

One thing I would change is that as a player I would like that the game prevents me from using a skill if that action is going to kill me. Often times I was not sure it was an enemy who killed me or my own skill. That was quite confusing and frustrating, especially since it's  impossible to tell how much HP I currently had left...

But anyway, really great game! Thanks for participating in our jam!

Very difficult. I'm not a vampire, I'm a cockroach trying to steal a crumb at the barrel of a shotgun. Everyone in this game is against me. My abilities are killing me, enemies are killing me (except for blue and thanks for tmo). I still didn't understand the purpose of the game. Artificial intelligence breaks down and opponents' hitboxes are broken, which gave me at least a chance to kill them.

The big problem is in the not readable healthbar.

So game cool. And I couldn't complite it.

Developer

Yeah, game is a little bit hardcore) There is a mechanic that on full hp you can attack enemies only from their back, so maybe problem is not in hitboxes. Now i think that we should delete it, cause it only makes gameplay worse.

Anyway, thank you for your feedback. It was fun to read it and i find it useful!

Just the opposite. I could kill them in the face in any condition.

I really really like the idea of the game. Also you really nailed the Hotline Miami style and feeling, both in terms of visuals and music! I'm impressed you made all this in two days.

But I feel that the gameplay has a fundamental issue. The abilities are awesome to use, but it's extremely unapologetic. I died of overusing abilities more than from actual enemies, making the player themself a huge enemy. It's an interesting mechanic, but I'd either increase the base health or make the health penalty smaller. Also considering you can only kill enemies from behind when having full hp, the level design doesn't account much to it, as there's not enough dark to properly stealth around.

On the brighter side of gameplay I really liked the enemy design, it was creative and intuitive. It was clear which enemies could do what, and therefore change the strategy in approaching them. The samurai guys tho are a little overpowered haha.

Cool submission!

Thank you for your review! Yeah, abilities have such problem, especially Q. We hadn't enough time to test it in action. Hope after jam we will fix this issues and make level design better!

Also! Forgot that there are some ladders on level (red), you can use them by pressing F.
