Judge feedback

Judge feedback is anonymous and shown in a random order.

  • Would love to see more of the alchemy part. Alchemy is about transformation, synthesis, combination, and hidden knowledge, so I think the game would benefit more of transformation and hidden knowledge. Just go full lean into its motion. (see what I did there? Eh eh?)
  • Atmosphere and graphics are fantastic! Visually I like the way you've represented the world in both the cinematic and the gameplay itself. It would be ideal if we could move through the initial text in the cutscene at our own pace. I was reading the itch.io page and didn't realise I was missing the story :) Good idea to make it easy to replay the cinematic. The gameplay feels very fluid and natural.

Did you include your Game Design Document as a Google Drive link?
Yes, and in the description.

Seriously... did you include your Game Design Document?
Yes, and also in the download instructions !

Is your game set to Public so we can see it?
Yes

Tell us about your game!
Full Motion Alchemist is a fast-paced platformer where you use alchemy to flee big-corpo the fastest way possible. Spawn platforms and damage walls to have the best time and earn medals, it's a speedrun game !

Extra Notes
It's our first game jam for all of us. For me, the programmer, it's my first own game as I began learning gamedev 2 month ago, i'm very happy where it stands right now, there are unfortunately some bugs I didn't have time to iron out as I need to stop early. The two other team member are quite the silent type so i'll speak for everybody when I say : Have a good time with our little project !

This game was so fun to play! I liked the visuals a lot, and the music sounded so good--it's a great fit for the game! My best time (after a handful of tries) was 1:14--very happy I eventually broke 1:30 despite not being so good at these sorts of games haha. Having intentional bunny-hopping was so fun! What I ended up doing a lot was actually moving my right hand off the mouse so that my left hand was focused on mashing W and holding D while my right was mashing space--I haven't really done that sort of hand repositioning thing for a game in a really long time, so it was a very fun experience!! :)

Some feedback notes if you continue to work on this:

  • This is definitely just a browser thing, but something I kept doing with space and left-click kept scrolling my window for me, so boosting myself with the pillars + jumping was inconsistent for me and hard. I think having a full-screen mode would help (or an downloadable build too).
  • Sometimes I'd get stuck on pillars, or I'd pillar myself into a platform or something. It's not the worst thing in the world since it actually adds a bit more of a challenge, but it did get a bit annoying at times.
  • Might have just been because of the two things above, but there were a couple parts I'd consistently try to 'play safe' instead of try to go fast. Not a bad thing--I think it's fun for players to try to decide what parts they want to take risks on vs. what parts they want to play safe. Just something to think about depending on what experiences you want players to have at which parts of the game.

Awesome job!

Thanks, transmitted you appreciation towards the art and music to the team members :p ! 1:14 is a very good time, more if you didn't look up the video or anything like this, congrats ! I'm really glad you liked the game, and yeah, there are problems, mainly coming from the browser, even if I tried to lock the mouse to the game screen you could still click outside with enough velocity, arguably worse than being blatant about the "Don't click outside !"... Still, an error from my side, like the platform cliping that I did try to solve... but only made it happen less, like you said it's not the end of the world but i'll definitely try to solve it when I work on this more.

I'm really glad you liked our game, i'm so happy to get so much feedback, love to you !

Thanks !

Great game! Probably the most satisfying movement in all the games I've played in this jam. It's super smooth and fun, I wished there was more. The opening cinematic was so cool that I instantly knew I was in for a polished experience. I hope you finish it!

Developer

Transmitted to the artist who made the cinematic, she's really glad you like it ! And yeah, I have done like 5 days out of my twelve doing only the movement, was really my objective to get it good and working, glad it's doing what it is supposed to be doing. I intend to make more in the future, maybe not just after the jam but the game will have a finished state sometimes in the future :p. Thanks you so much playing our game and I'm glad you liked it !

This is very good! The controls are smooth and nice and the gimmick is great too! I especially like the moment where you boost yourself up with the block, it's so satisfying! Such a pity there wasn't a second level. I was just getting used to the controls and the game just ended :(
Anyway, well done!!

Developer

Thanks ! Yeah, I guess I stuck to the "around 5 minutes of gameplay" that said Thor too much... could have put more for the other players. But then, you could try and earn better medals and have better timers, what time did you get ? And thank you so much for playing and for your appreciation, we really appreciate it !

It didn't happen a lot that I wanted a second level this much. It really felt like you didn't explore the level design enough with the cool mechanics that you have! Shooting projectiles to launch yourself felt super satisfying, the jumping (short and high), felt very smooth. A nice story intro and good futuristic beat during the game make everything come together.

But please, don't put reset on esc. I got almost to the end and I tried to pause because someone was talking to me (as a reflex), when I came back, the game had reset to the menu. A reset button doesn't feel needed for your game, because you can remove the platforms anyway if you make yourself get stuck in it (which I did).

Great game!

Developer (1 edit)

Yeah sorry, should have put it on another button or have a charging Time before reset. I needed a reset button for people wanting to farm runs to have better Times, so they Can restart runs quickly, but yeah, probably wrong button (it was supposed to be a pause menu, didn't have time to do it). Thanks for the feedback !

Finished with a time of 3:42. For someone not great at fast platformers, I'm proud of that.

A couple of things I noticed: The music, while excellent and hype, could be a little ear grating. Perhaps consider adding in sound controls so that people can turn off the music if they want. Also, in the areas where the protagonist mentioned "Anti-Alchemy Coating", I found I was still able to make pillars. Might be an oversight there.

The game overall is very fun and very fluid, with a high skill ceiling if you can master the "pillar jumps" as I like to call them. The story as well is interesting and engaging. Always love a story about a corrupt alchemical organization running the world. The pixel art is incredible as well! Very charming yet conveys the action of the setting phenomenally.

Excited to see more of this in the future!

Developer

Thank you  ! Yeah, I see how the music could become a bit irritating at some point, an option menu was in the timeline but I did not have the time (again, haha) to do it. Yeah, the anti-alchemy not working is definitely an oversight. Thank you that you liked our little projects, and very much thank you again for playing it, have a great day !

wow, the art was incredible, and with the intro/chase kinda vibe it felt a little like "another world", but much faster.

Developer

Transmitted to the artiste, thank you so much for playing !

Okay you need to make a full game of this.

So let me just get the couple of bad/annoying things out of the way first.

How the hell does bunnyhopping work? I couldn't seem to do anything with it.

More than once I was able to push myself into the wall with sideways platforms, thanks to the reset button it wasn't a huge deal but still a bit annoying.

The text was a little small and there was no full screen-button so I had to play it in a tiny embed.

Anyways on to the stuff you actually want to hear.

The opening was fan-*******-tastic you set the entire world, setting and story within like the first 60 seconds and I was hooked IMMEDIATELY. The character talking as you played was great but as mentioned previously the text could have been easier to see.

The art is great I love the pixel art characters and backgrounds it all felt very consistent and really on theme with your world.

Wait disregard the part about bunnyhopping, I went back to listen to the music again cos it was such a bop and figured it out. I had to keep tapping. Your speedrun/tutorial video really helped!

Anyways the music absolutely rocks it fits the high speed intense vibes of being on the run really well and like I said above I went back to listen to it just while writing this cos I loved it so much.

Gameplay wise I loved the alchemy mechanic of summoning the platform but the wall jumping and climbing felt really slow by comparison. I saw in your video you basically skipped all the slow parts with speedrun strats which is awesome but as a new player going slow and climbing up the walls felt meh. There was nothing wrong with it functionally but because you gave such an AWESOME alternative to moving around with the player and platforms it just felt so much worse by comparison.

I want more, the world begs to be expanded and I loved the enemy designs. Quick question you said they were from Flamel corp (I think?). This has to have been a nod to Nicolas Flamel right? My immediate thoughts were "Oh my god is he like some insane immortal dictator in this post-apocalyptic world? Is he hunting wild alchemists to stop them discovering the secret to his philosophers stone?

You captured my entire imagination immediately and now I am ravenous for more.

Developer

Thanks you so much ! I transmitted your appreciation for the art and music to both artists and they are very pleased ! They really did an amazing job that really created a cool atmosphere and elevated the game up a notch.

Yeah, there are problems I did not have the time to solve like the resolution and the not very good teaching of the mecanics, I did see that when playtesting with people but I was not able to change it as I was not productive enough. And yeah, you did see the "Flamel" correctly, it is definitely a nod to Nicolas Flamel. As to what happens I'll not spoil you haha.

I probably intend to make a more polished and advanced version of this game in the future (I need to develop my programming skills a bit more I think haha) and your feedback really helped to see what could be revised (wall jumping mainly) for it to be more satisfying, maybe the levels a bit too. Again, thanks and love from the team !

Pretty cool! Really reminds me of the sort of Flash games I'd play as a child, which is a nice thing :)

Developer

Thanks, already had the comment about flash games, NEver really played them but I see the similarities haha

Thank you ! I transmitted you love for the music to the music guy, he's happy :p
