  • GDD Great GDD; I could find all the information I needed there. The only thing I would add would be pictures in the inspiration and mechanics section. Good work. Gameplay Little wizard, move out of the way; it's dangerous. Oh no, he has his AirPods on; he can't hear us. What a novel idea. Using keystroke patterns as spells was a nice touch. The ones implemented were really simple and easy to master. The gameplay feels fluid, the little clueless wizard jamming all the time as he is yanked from platform to platform; what a life. I only had some issues with the gameplay when I advanced further; the game became so fast that the boulders warning started to mix up. I got a warning in the middle, and it fell on the right, things like this. The game was not prepared for my mad wizard skills. (The judge writing this review is not a wizard, nor has skills, but possibly is mad.). Art Lovely art style; the retro works well with this kind of game, and the sprites were full of personality. The color palette was very clear. An enjoyable experience. Sound design I can understand why the little wizard doesn't stop jamming, even when he is yanked around by his annoyed staff that may or may not be a reincarnated grand wizard. Lovely BGM, and the SFX gave me the feeling of an SNES game. Last thoughts I loved the gameplay loop, and the concept too is amazing. And there's so much room for expansion. You can add more spell combinations, enemies that can only be defeated by specific spells, and even a nightmare mode that instead of a little wizard, you have to protect an archmage while he casts a mighty spell to clear the stage. So much potential; I hope this keeps being developed post-game jam. Great job.

Is your game set to public on itch.io so we can see it?
Yes

Summarise your game!
Blunderbolt is an arcade-style action game where you play as a wizard’s staff. As the staff, your job is to protect your wizard master by casting powerful spells to defeat incoming enemies and guiding him safely between three platforms to avoid dangerous obstacles for as long as you can!

Please explain how your game fits the theme:
The theme, "You Are the Weapon," is taken quite literally in Blunderbolt by placing the player in the role of the hero's magical weapon rather than the hero themselves. This perspective shift puts the focus on the weapon's agency, making it the true protagonist. Additionally, the game subverts the classic trope of the hero being powerful and strong; instead, the player must protect a young and clueless apprentice, emphasizing the weapon's critical role in their survival.

Is there anything you'd like the judges to pay particular attention to?
Please give us feedback on the "game feel" of the game!

This game is so grooovy and I enjoyed every part of it. The music with the little dancing wizard is an unstoppable combo. Very straight forward and easy to understand gameplay. It was fun and challenging. Definitely would be a great game for friends to compete high scores and  an endless mode to compare scores? Different rooms, constraints and challenges could make it even longer for a full release on here or steam. I love being a hardworking magic staff so thank you for such a great entry!

I had a great time with Blunderbolt! The music, colors, and dancing wizard brought major charm to a simple yet enjoyable gameplay loop. What's the best score from your team?

A great combination of the classic space invaders mixed with a rhythm/music game with the input system. Really creative and unique, I think this could be expanded upon to be a great niche filler for anyone that enjoys rhythm based games with specific key inputs. Fantastic entry!

Very refreshing idea for a game! Lots of charm and while it has a basic premise and straightforward controls, there's a lot that can be expanded on. Great ideas and a cool spin that I think has a lot of potential for replay-ability!

Thank you so much for playing the game!

Really fun and charming! I like the idea of using WASD as commands for different spells, though the WWW spell in particular gets quite fatiguing to input in rapid succession when the difficulty picks up later on, so having some other options for attacks would be nice. Lots of replay value, I could totally see this becoming a Downwell-tier Steam title!

Thank you for playing and providing feedback!

Definitely a great point regarding the WWW spell being quite fatiguing. We're looking into potential alternatives! Really appreciate the comparison to Downwell, it is a huge inspiration for the art direction. It's an honor to be compared to a great game like Downwell!

So much charm to this submission, I really enjoyed the non-traditional inputs as a way of moving and attacking. Balancing the mouse pointer and key sequences makes for a fun experience. Really cute artwork and design, well done!

Cool style, really unique gameplay. The asteroid mechanic was a little broken though, but still a good game overall.

Hey thanks for playing and the great feedback!

The enemies clump up in the corners a lot so it's easy to kill them. Other than that I think this game is a lot of fun
