Making a rhythm game for The Champ is a great idea to start with. Having things change depending on the successfully rhyme while also having to keep their power secret were genius additions.
Despite having place holders, this is a neat concept for a rhythm game. Thanks for sharing what you've made!
I think there is something interesting about balancing the dynamic between pressing the right and wrong buttons, and having these two polar actions contribute to a single win condition in a rhythm game. It really capture the feeling of freestyling that comes with rapping. One suggestion I would make is to continue to lean into that concept a bit more, and really showcase it. Highlight the words where the rhyme can change, and maybe make the input button icon glow or something to indicate that the input can be wrong to throw off the rhyme intentionally.
Other than that, I did enjoy the simplicity of the game, and I always appreciate a rhythm game that has the world change around you as you play.
I think this really needed a tutorial of some kind, since it's a hard concept to explain in text without trying it. Then again, if I put in a tutorial it probably would have been the same length as the main game at this point, so that might defeat the purpose :p
As someone who is perpetually late for work, I'd love the ability to strike my boss with lightning, haha! Great version of the Champ, he's my favourite of the Jam!
I didn't even think that it would be the boss when I was concepting it--it was just a random person walking as a "gotcha" right before the end (your suspicion goes up by 50% if you bolt him, and I'm not even sure it's possible to win outside of no-fail). :)
Oh that's hilarious lol!
Agreed that a rhythm game is a super great fit for the champ. i also really appreciate the options included. Stuff like controller and keyboard support, delay adjustment, and no fail mode are actually really nice accessibility things i would not expect from any game jam game
Thanks for the comment on the options--part of it's that coding is my strength here, and those are easier for me than even making simple pictures in paint.
The Champ's rhyming power is a perfect fit for a rhythm game. Cool idea!
Addictive! Played it many times until I could finally get Champ to work. I liked being surprised by DSD, the rhymes were really funny and I like how they changed both the words and the world, had a really good time with this one.
Fun and interesting concept! I understand that there's some placeholder assets, but I can imagine what it would be like with finished music. A bit difficult to press all the buttons (on keyboard at least) while reading the lyrics and looking at the visuals, but I had a good time with this.
Yeah, keyboard controls were a last-minute addition (and I haven't figured out how to do user-rebindable controls in Godot yet), so I'd recommend a controller if you can, as those are a lot more natural.
This was fun! The concept is solid and I'd love to play it again with some groovy boom-bap beats.
Seriously, I really enjoyed playing this (on no-fail mode). It was a challenge to hit the (correct) keys while also reading the lyrics. Rhymes were funny, and the reality-bending moments were great!
Thanks! That's the main reason why I submitted it even in a relatively bare-bones state: because I liked the concept.
