I liked the three samurai system a lot, and the koku system was a great balance mechanic. The art style was cool, the select screen with the samurai portraits was neat. It's a really good game, the controls were responsive, congratulations.
Nicely stylized and executed idea. On a few stages you can go off-screen, not sure if that is a know issue.
Enjoyed the little puzzles of solving the stages, although the stage with the pikemen line in the front with the archer army in the back seemed impossible with my setup. Will try to beat them later!
Also, today I learned what koku is, so that is a plus point!
Separating the fighting and the samurai management was a nice idea.
Well done!
quite a charming game
I loved this game ! Visuals are pretty charming, managment and combats are fun and balanced. Well done :)
Thank you for playing! : )
Neat little management game. The combat was surprisingly difficult and balanced. I feel like it would be nice to know how many samurai you have without going to battle, like when you are looking at buying them. It would also be cool if they differed in some other way, like number of hits they can take as opposed to simply different attack patterns, if you expand it maybe you can do that. Different weapons + different armors to create many samurai variants. Armor enabling more hits, weapons enabling different attack patterns. I think some transitions would be nice and some animations could help but honestly it didn't really feel that necessary the core here is very strong. Being able to deflect arrows would be nice as an alternative to armor, or perhaps a dodge that lets you pass through arrows. One more suggestion I have is just improved readability, it was hard for me to tell where an arrow might hit me.
The music and sound was pretty good too.
oooooh! lots of good points here, Im going to try to improve some of those systems to have a more final polished product, I think alot of your points could bring the game up to a more finished state, thanks for taking the time to play it and give me such a good write up!
Neat concept! I love figuring out which Samurai is right for the job! I did have a little trouble figuring out how close the early enemies could get to you before you die, but that's the only nitpick I had! The art is also very charming.
Great work!
Thanks for playing, yeah i need to work on making some of those collisions more understandable, thanks for comment!
love the color pallete used, conveys the era well
love the Seven Samurai inspiration and the game play mechanic of building your team from weaker and stronger unit depending on how much you want to spend
arrows were difficult to get through
Thanks for giving the game a try! I really need to make the arrows collision smaller, just the tip so its easier to navigate around them!
Loved the artwork you've done for the samurais and the character sprites too. Spent all my Koku on the medium samurai at first since I thought that was THE best samurai to get. Then the spear samurais showed up and wrecked me good haha.
I don't know it if was intentional or not but the samurai's lives still goes down even if you didn't take a hit at the end of a level.
Overall a cute and fun game.
Thanks for playing! Yeah.. I need to fix the whole, you lose your samurai when the level ends bit. Im glad you got to experience a little bit of the strategy involved in the game, I still have the lower the spearmen's difficulty. Those guys are just too unpredictable at the moment.
Fantastic idea! I am not sure if I missed something but maybe a way to counter the arrows would be good. The character portraits were stunning and so full of character.
Oh thanks for hosting this awesome jam and for playing my game! Yeah i think it be cool to cut the arrows down or something, ill take note of that!
So this game has a really interesting art style and the mechanics in the game is pretty interesting. Paying Samurai for your lives and you have to slash them all down is a pretty beat em up basic concept.
Though to be honest, the issue lies in the fact that your character is facing front at all times and the fact that some of the hitboxes tend to be awkward in the browser version kinda dampens my interest playing further rounds. I got to round 4-5ish before the spear elements kinda screwed me over with its ridiculous range. Short sword light samurais can't even reach that. You have to buy the bigger samurais and you don't get luxury of cost.
You get 8 Koku per winning round, which only nets you so many chances. Its kinda a bumdown that the accuracy is pretty jank in terms of overall combat gameplay.
I do like the character selection screen's style. It looks like Japanese Ink based style scroll like character portraits, which I kinda dig the vibes for. The sprite styles do feel awkward when putting it side by side.
Overall, pretty decent game. With a bit more polish, it could be better.
Thank you for playing, and for giving such a thorough review I really appreciate that! I think a lot of comments are super valid, I need to rework some of the koku rewards vs prices, and also I 100% need to add more animations throughout! Im hoping I can polish it a bit and leave it at a state that im proud of. Thanks again for the constructive criticism! : )
The artwork was amazing! Really enjoyed the character cards and the whole dynamic of being in the village paying for the samurai! Then there is the layer of strategy of knowing which samurai to use for each job, it took me some experimenting but I then realized the use of each one as the enemies appeared and brought different obstacles! Man this was really fun I would love to see more of this in the future!
Really like the art! Can recommend medium samurai, most bang for your rice!
Thanks for the kind words! Oh that's interesting, I found myself using the light samurai a ton! I wonder what a full Medium samurai run would be like lol Thanks for playing!
Artwork and game concept are fantastic! Really love the style!
Thank you for playing my game! Im glad you enjoyed it! : )
