What's up guys! How are your games doing?
I want to open this post for the ones that are making their first game jam!

How was your experience? Something you realized and want to share or say?

Let us know and share your game!

And of course, let's rate our games so we can help each other :)

In my experience:


I'm making games for almost 7 months and the first problem that I had with a game jam was that I scooped a bit bigger than myself. xD

 I ran the 3 days making a lot of content and I get a lot of stress xD But it was fun. 

I finished my game like 20 minute before the jam ends. It was a chaos!

So my experience was excelent, I had a lot of fun and stress but I realize that the next time I must try to make something smaller and expand from that point!

My game is called Legend of Glitchrun https://noar.itch.io/legend-of-glitchrun

It's a puzzle game with RPG elements! The game was a normal RPG till it crashed, and converted in a puzzle escape room style game!

You must find the glitches to advance in the level! NPC's will guide you (a bit) haha.
I get inspired by The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario 64 glitch speed runs, so the game converted in a escape room game now!

This is my first game jam too! I actually had lots of time and I kept my scope fairly small. At first I was a little bit stressed because I sat for 4 hours scrapping idea after idea but then finally I came up with something that I liked! I'm very proud of my achieement this game jam, although I already know alot of fixes I want to make to my game (thanks to people playing it and giving me feedback), but that will have to wait until next week, for obvious reasons lol.

It's always you being attacked by yet another virus. If only there was a way to control it...

In this fun, yet simple game, you play as a computer virus that tries to destroy every last PC on the planet. The only problem is: some people are smart, and have installed an antivirus software. However, it's your job to make sure that the bugs don't get caught and destroyed. Can you do it? If so, try and beat your best time and comment it in the comments section of the game!

This game had a lot of effort gone into it and I would greatly appreciate it if you were to rate it. Thank you :)

Hey!

We are developing in Unity for over a year, but this is our first game jam.

At the beginning, we had no idea for the topic, but then something came in. We made a 2D platformer based in age of cavemans, which is featuring a few bugs (mechanics) that you must use in order to complete the game.

Hey ;-) It was also the first jam for EinsteinsErbe and me. But we're both professional programmer (for machines, plc to be precise and EE is studing some Neronal network stuff)  and the theme was sooo a lucky punch for us! We both love to hide eastereggs (and intended buggs) in programms our coworkers use ^^ We had great fun.

We started at 9am desinging the game, listed bugs and stuff and started to create the first 2 Levels and of course the crappy mainmenu for our game (player was a square at that point) we finished the day at arround 9 o clock playing some Mario card on the Switch and made a game out of it to write down Title ideas as fast as possible while the other one keeped on driving. After maybe 30min EE looked at me laughed out hard (he lost the game because of that ^^) and said: "The Glitcher!!"  Well the idea was born,.

Satturday was not very intensive as we both had also other stuff to do, but EE improved the menu further (Level select) and I worked on some levels but not a lot work was done.

Next day I started creating the thumbnail which turned out so nice and bit by bit I drew all the graphics for the game, we added a shop, enemies and finally an endbos (muahaha), by the evening (11pm) we had 10 Levels with a lot of crappy mechanics and glitches, forced my GF to play test it (jumpscare made here jump... ^^). and then... we were finished ;-).

What I learned:

- Pixelart is fun!

- I actually ARE able to do animations (if enough pressure is apllied ^^)

- I really like making games 

- We really should take part in even more jams (once or twice a year at least)

- AND I CAN NEVER EVER HERE THAT FUCKING SOUNDTRACK AGAIN!!! ^^


What I recommend:

- using Github and Git (don't know what it is, google/youtube it, it will save you a looot of hedache if working on any sort of programming project)

-  Spend the most time with stuff you are really good at

- Do that kind of game you already have experience with

- kiss -> keep it simple and stupid :D

Hey. I was 16 yo. and I'm intrested in game development.

I started learning unity while ago and this is my First Game Jam.

The game is short and do not have some mechanics that I planned to add, but still its playable. (I have been in school on Saturday :/ )

This is really cool experience and I'm looking forward to get into more jams and of course make better games.

hey! this was my first jam too. i was pretty nervous about doing it, but am so glad i did! even if my submission lacks some essential qualities to be called a "game," it is playable, at least.

i have been mucking around with Twine for a bit now but feel like im only just  getting the hang of it. 

scope was a huge issue for me. i thought "nine petals, six thorns" -- sounds reasonable. but boy, was i wrong! the crunch was real but honestly stoked to finish it at least.

it's been so rad seeing how supportive everyone is, and all the creative games everyone has made! i didnt expect this part of the jam, but so far ive loved playing all the games and seeing all the ways the theme was interpreted. 

can't wait to do more of these :)

Was the first jam for me, but not for the rest of my team.

It was awesome to meet with new people and make a full game.
It was also my first time releasing a game with other people.

What I learned:

  • It's okay to take programming shortcuts in a jam. Not all code has to be perfectly structured.
  • Working in a team is a good opportunity to focus on certain aspects of a game, while having other people focusing on other parts of the game.
    When I make short prototypes, I usually either focus really hard on one aspect of the game to work on one of the skills I want to improve or try to make something simple so I can have something decent in the end, but end up not really learning anything.
    Working in a team was an awesome opportunity to sharpen my skills and learn a lot of cool stuff while having a satisfying end product.
  • I have learned a lot on how to code and how not to code when someone else works on the same project.
  • I have learned how to design music with Wwise and integrate dynamic music into Unity. I would have never integrated music in a prototype, and even less dynamic music, but like I said in my second point, working in a team was a good opportunity to work on things that are not programming or game design/things that I think less about when I say I want to make a small game.

I am 16 and this was my first game jam. I've been using Unity for a while and I have started quite lot of projects but unfortunately I didn't finish most of them. Making and publishing a game in such a short time was very satisfying and rewarding. 

My biggest problem during the jam was that I initially overscoped. Fortunately I realised that pretty quickly and came up with a smaller, more manageable project. 

The main thing I learned from the jam is how much polish can do for a game. Most of my games never left the prototype stage. They always had close to zero polish, most of them didn't even have sound. For this game I spend much more time on things like particles, screen shake etc. and it is amazing how much impact little things like that can have. Although this game was made in under 72 hours I think it is more enjoyable than any of my earlier game because I did way more to improve the feel of the game.

Another big thing is to know your strengths and weaknesses : I'm no artist. When I try to make good 2d (or 3d) art it either takes way too long and just looks kinda okay or it's turns out terrible which is why for this game I only used simple shapes for the graphics did my best to make them look nice and the moved on to making the core mechanics and polishing the game.

 I have been really happy with the comments people left under my game. Everyone has been very kind and supportive, I basically only got constructive criticism and people left me a lot of great ideas to improve my games and things to keep in mind for my next project.

This is also my/our first Game Jam. (Arthurs and mine)

We didn't have that much game making knowledge. I've programmed small games in game maker for a year now, but never finished them and arthur did'nt make games before either. Therefore we wanted to create a game, which should be as simpleand short as possible. On friday we came up with the core idea of a quiz game, where you get insulted by a bird for answering incorrectly. On the same day, I programmed the Textbox and buttons and Arthur got started with the soundtrack. The next day, we thought of questions and a storyline for the game.  I drew the Sprites and Arthur made some sounds for the bird talking. On the last day, things were getting tricky. We still needed more questions and insults and we wanted to implement different endings. Because of the lack of time, we scrapped some of the questions and didn't fix all the bugs (because our game did'nt have that much to do with bugs at the time). If a bug didn't make the game crash, it was fine. In the end we finished the game released it. We're pretty happy, how it turned out.

This Gamejam was really fun and I'm sure, we'll participate in other ones too.

Mine first also. I started with simple but I think good puzzle idea and worked on physics and movement fisrt day. Second day I made main mechanics of game and 3 first levels. Then I realized I have to do More levels More mechanics musics sound effects menus ui everything. And yeah 9 hours of work Last day and done. Pretty fun jam overall. I already played yours and to be honest is one of my favourites. If you can improve the graphics and the UI in the futuro I grant you that you will have a powerfull game. I loved how you used the glitches and the puzzles are very well done.

This is my first jam too!!

I started to work in unity a year and a half ago.. maybe more.

at first when the jam has started, i didn't really settled on an idea and just started experimenting in unity, creating some scripts and objects that in the end I didn't used.

at the end of the day 1 I had a really basic idea and mechanics, so all i left with  was 2 days to make it feel fun and building all the levels and everything..

next time I hope I'll spend more time developing and less time thinking on a concept P:

Hello everyone,

this is also my first game jam :)

Call me crazy, I built my first game in this jam, pretty much without any experience with the used engine and programming language: D

But to be fair it should be mentioned that I studied computer science. So logical thinking, programming and the functioning of computers are not foreign to me;)

For this year I have set myself the goal of really building a game. As an absolute beginner, I decided to use the RPGMaker. It offers exactly the right start for me in 2D game development.

Jua and pretty much with this knowledge I started here: D

At first I was really unsure whether I would be able to get anything done, let alone something that reminded me of a game.

After all, I had an idea right away. When I heard the announcement of the topic, I immediately thought of the first bug found in the history of computers. In case you don't know, the first bug was really a living bug :D
This thought gave me the idea for my puzzle game.

I (unfortunately) didn't use the Discord. At first I didn't dare and then I found a good group to share in the RPGMaker forum :)

For me, the jam weekend was divided as follows.
I had to work a long time on Friday. But I found the time to put my rough puzzle idea on paper and so I had my concept.
In the evening and at night, I then followed some tutorials to get used to the engine.
Saturday was a wild ride.
I designed graphics, wrote scripts, created maps, built the puzzle mechanics etc. It was always a try and error, but with every problem I solved it got better.
Sunday morning I had other things to do outside of the jam. I then used the afternoon and night to add more levels, fix bugs and build the itch side.

On Monday morning I was pretty tired but also proud that I did it :)

Even though I had extensions in mind for my simple puzzle idea, I stayed with the basic idea. I suspect that's why I got this game done. I was able to really concentrate on the core and implement it.

When I read the comments on my game, most seem to like the puzzle. I myself don't like to play it again right now, I've done it soooo many times to remove all the wrong solutions: D

Today I finally found the time to work on the polished version.
For starters, I'm just going to revise the content that's already in the jam version so the foundation fits.
After that, I definitely want to expand the puzzle element, because I have a few ideas for extensions that I would like to test.

As an an example:
If you turn one part, it rotates another.
Some parts only conduct the current of a certain color.
The 3x3 parts are not specified, but you have 9 loose parts that you have to arrange and rotate yourself.
