Day 4

Couldn't work on it for the past 2 days because I had exams to take care of so hopefully I can at least finish an intro scene for the Jam. Today I finished working on the enemies. You shoot them with the rewind bullets to send the enemy's back to their time (enemies from the future must be shot with the red/forward bullet). You can also freeze enemies with the blue bullets as well. Might be a bit wonky since Im not really good at making an enemy AI script, but does the job at least. One more day left c:

Wow, great concept! I really like the unique mechanics you implemented, never thought of rewinding yourself.  It looks great so far, keep it up!

Day 3

Worked on the Environment (God Bless tilemaps) doing LOTS of layering for one house and did some logic for...

  • Going through door
  • Going in and out of homes
  • Different bullet types (Blue/Freeze, Green/ Rewind, Red/FastForward (Red isnt done yet))
  • NPC detection and follow radius (Used MoveTowards rather then A* atm)

Hopefully I'll have time to work on a thorough multi path story. Anyways here's an update on how it looks so far, keep on jamming guys! c:

Notice when I shoot it with the green bullet it 'rewinds' to the bathroom while the blue bullet freezes them in place.

Nice work, looks great so far! I don't even know how I would go about the logic for the wall jump thus, I am thoroughly impressed. I'm not sure if you're planning to use a cinemachine for the camera but, I think itd look great with the wall jumps if you get the chance to set it up (Normally takes like 5 minutes). Anyways great work and I cant wait to see the combat when its done c:

Thank you, thank you, I tried my best to make the controller as smooth as possible c:

Edit: Just took a look at your work so far and it looks like a triple A title! Looking forward to playing it when you're done!

Thanks! Look forward to it c:

Thanks!

Jesus Christ, just looking at your initial teaser gets me excited (The GIF thingy). Can't wait to see how you go about your project, I loved escape type games growing up. I definitely will play it when done. Best of Luck!

Nice Work! I like how you've created the environment, everything feels so lively with the parallax background and moving ships. Can't wait to see what else you have in store.

Timeless Gun (Work In Progress Title)

Hey everyone, I just wanted to keep a development log of my current works to help motivate myself and maybe others as well! So Im coming in solo (mainly so if I fail I'll only let myself down) and planning to work on a 2D game. I participated in the last Jam but unfortunately I really over scoped my project and couldn't complete it, so hopefully this time will be a different story.

Concept

So my current idea is to have a side scroller adventure game where the protagonist finds herself lost in a city where she finds a gun that is being inhabited by the god of time. The GoT (God of Time)  reveals that he is trapped somewhere and convinces the protagonist for her help. The two then go on a comical adventure with each other as they search the city (If I have time I want to make them travel through different time periods).

I want to make it as funny and interactive as dr. langeskov, the tiger, and the terribly cursed emerald a whirlwind heist. If you haven't played it, you should check it out it's free and a really fun game with how the game interacts with you. Hopefully I'll be able to provide the same amount of interaction and humor in my game.

The game fits into the theme from the mechanics of the gun. It will have three different bullets; fastforward, rewind, and pause. You'll be able to shoot enemies and obstacles in order to progress to story.

Art

So I'm 100%  not an artist thus I'll be using pre-made art from others (with consent and licensing of course). I'll list there pages here so you can check them out if you like there work!

Day 1-2

I basically just set up the character controller making it as modular as possible and making it feel as impactful as possible. Basically adding the following....

  • Blend Tree for Jumps
  • Smoke/Dust around Legs when Jumping/Landing/Shooting
  • Screen Shake when Shooting
  • Recoil Shell when Shooting

I only had a run and idle animation initially so I used https://www.piskelapp.com/ to create a shoot animation and I used part of the run to make a jump animation.

Did some work setting up tile mapping following Brackeys tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryISV_nH8qw). This way I can set up my world A LOT easier, I did have issues fitting my sprites into the tiles. The fix to this was adjusting the Pixels Per Unity to the block sizes as mentioned here (https://answers.unity.com/questions/1460391/tilemap-resizing-tiles.html). Another problem I had was having white lines between some tiles, this was fixed by editing the sprite sheet and adding a border to each tile I needed it for. This video does a great job at explaining why its happening and different ways to fix it (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QW53YIjhQsA).

Anyways here's what I have so far (Sorry for my loud clicking). Let me know what you guys think and if you have any suggestions, thanks!!

Wow the game already looks really put together and responsive which I think is really important to top down shooters, particularly the impact of each shot on the enemy. The game mechanics alone already makes it look great. good work!

Day 3:

Didn't get much done in terms of the story but, I took care of a lot of the coding practices, generalization, and abstractions with creating interactions with NPCS.

Created base interact scripts and collision detectors.

Created the generic NPC with 7  different preset loops using animations from mixamo.

Setup Fungus to start writing and keep track of the story.

I have a basic concept, but yeah, man kind has surely gone too far here. I want it to be more like your first Idea where the experiment goes terribly wrong and sucks up everything,  bringing the end to the world. As one of the few survivors you wake up inside the black hole trying to survive the creatures and other survivors (I choose to be in the black hole because less work for me to do with level design c: ). After that I don't have much progress, but I do like the idea of spawning creatures from the hole. I might steal that idea and include it into the reason for the experiment going wrong. Thanks for the feedback and giving some nice concepts to the story!

Wow great job creating the UIs for the game. I find it really impressive when people can create their own art. Keep it up! I'm looking forward to seeing how your game turns out I love story driven games.

Nice I like it, its easy to pick up and I like how the look and feel to the arrows that shoot out of the character. I think it'd be pretty neat if you can find a cool backing track or some satisfying sound effects for when people play the game. Great job man c:

Day 2:

Worked on the Combat a bit and on the starting room. Its still a little bit wonky but, I'll just keep it like this for now and try to finish the rest of the game first. I played around with activating colliders at specific times to detect when the player is being hit. Not sure if that is the best way to do things and will try to find a better way when I get a chance. Other then that the enemy reacts pretty well to being hit.

Tomorrow I hope to have some of the story implemented with some dialog or at least more of the map design done.

Hi all,

This is my first game jam, I'm writing this dev log in hopes to keep me accountable to finishing my game but, also to give some idea what my games about and to get some feedback. I'm planning to create a third person shooter with some compelling story, well as good of a story as I can make. You will play as a friend of a scientist who literally got sucked into his experiment. He created a black hole that ended up swallowing everything on earth and you get to experience first hand what its like to be in a black hole.  The two of you need to dive deeper into the hole in order to learn of a way to escape and get out but, you encounter some "problems" and need to solve them.

Hopefully since the black hole is the center of the story and you're diving deeper into it, this game will fit the theme of the jam.

Hopes for this Jam:

  • Finnish a prototype of the game
  • Have good combat and a compelling story
  • Have multiple endings similar to the walking dead or until dawn

Art/Animation:

  • I'm not an artist or a modeler so I'm planning on using assets I purchased from Synty
  • Animations: Mixamo and Clazy Runner might change in the future Im just using whatever I have available

Day 1:

So far I've created the basic layout for the lab room where everything starts and the basic third person controller which was made by following a couple of Sharp Accents tutorials on third person shooters.
