After some discussion on the Discord chat, it became clear some people wish for a "theme" or other such jam challenge. So I settled on this idea of bonus challenges that you can try to undertake if you wish, just some of them or all of them! While they won't be considered in the global jam ratings, if you accept the challenge and post the link to your game page in this thread, we'll have a mini-vote here at the same time as the global voting. Just for those who undertake the challenge(s)! :)

How that'll be handled logistically, we'll see, lol. Depends how many people come here!

Challenges:

  • Pacifist - In an otherwise violent game, your protagonist must be a pacifist.
  • Yin-Yang - Where there is light, there is dark.
  • Eco-Friendly - The player can control the environment.
  • Freak - Random changes occur outside the player's control.
  • Mitosis - Something in the game must be able to split itself into 2 copies.

How To:

As this is only a small sub-competition (as it were), please post the link to your LOWREZJAM game here if you attempted any of the bonus challenges. Only post once for your game, if you have more than one game then you can make a separate post for it. This is not a discussion thread! Any post other than a submission will be removed. You may edit your post.

After the Shift

Challenges taken:

  • Pacifist - In an otherwise violent game, your protagonist must be a pacifist.
    • Player has no weapons to fight with apart from buildings
  • Yin-Yang - Where there is light, there is dark.
    • The Shift turned some people bad, even the best of us
Didn't really get this one, since it seems very open to interpretation. Pirates exist so that's my excuse :/
  • Eco-Friendly - The player can control the environment.
    • Player moves and builds on islands
  • Freak - Random changes occur outside the player's control.
    • Map regenerates at times
  • Mitosis - Something in the game must be able to split itself into 2 copies.
    • Possibly, such as bullets if there is enough time to implement it
Cannons fire two projectiles at a time, but I'm not sure that counts unless they split mid-air.

Soluna's Secret

Challenge Accepted:

Yin-Yang

  • You literally use light and darkness as part of the core gameplay.
  • The game is also dark. Both in its themes and lighting.

At the time of writing, the game is not currently finished, but I have linked to my devlog in the time being.

  • Eco-Friendly - player can temporarily remove platform blocks in the level
  • Mitosis - anytime an enemy dies,  2 more will spawn

Challege Accepted:

  • Eco-Friendly - You have as many control on your environment as in real life.
  • Freak - You can't choose who you are and where you were born. Just like in real life.

PEONS !

Challenges Accepted:

  •  Pacifist - player has no weapons and cannot directly kill enemies

Snail Racer 2000

Challenges Accepted:

  •  Pacifist - you don't kill anyone as there are no weapons nor health.
  • Freak  - obstacles are randomly placed so player don't know where will they come from

OK, so for those who posted their game here, try and play each others games and vote on your favorite. Just your favorite! You may make a new post! Whoever gets the most favs wins the coveted "very niche bragging rights" prize!

Other than that I hope you enjoyed the jam and that maybe these small challenges helped you along. :)

Im a bit late, but my game Parallels its basically the challenge yin-yang in its finest form.

My favorite is Soluna's secret, the way the game uses light is exactly a "ying-yang" thing.
