Underrated gem. The puzzles were pretty good. I especially felt satisfied when I finally solved the clock puzzle (I didn't know you could click to open the bottom center part for the longest while lol). Only thing is it's sometimes hard to know what's interactable and what's not. I stumbled upon the fire pit puzzle and solution by complete accident because I was spamming E on stuff.

Game would definitely benefit from sort of minimap. Maybe an inventory item you could open to see which part of the mansion you are in. I was able to navigate pretty easily after some time. But a lot of the hallways felt pretty samey.

Guns trivialize the vampire threat pretty quickly, especially after you find the extra ammo and shotgun. I didn't mind though cause collisions with them were pretty janky. It's easy to get stuck between their arms.

Presentation is definitely going to need a lot of polish before a Steam release. You should try taking queues from VNs for your dialogue ui. Maybe have a dedicated nametag and mini portrait for the characters.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback! It helps a lot. Glad to report lots of progress has been made since DD on the cutscene layout and adding more variety to the rooms.  Glad you found the puzzle satisfying too! Will have a thinnk about adding in some clarity in regards to how they work

I absolutely love the art in dialogs and cutscenes, it's great. Same with the "puzzle art" like the clock one. But the main game art is a bit lackluster. It works, it works well enough, but I feel it could be better.

Speaking of the main game - the map is a bit empty. Some areas are nice and detailed - like the library, some feel too empty - like halls, some rooms, the bathroom. I also almost got lost because all the areas are kinda samey. Well, not lost - but I started to forget where each room is.

Some logic is weird. I'm not talking about the puzzles, but needing to fill the bucket from the fishtank specifically and not from the plant, or the toilet, or the bathtub, or the kitchen - it's not fun.

The puzzles are fine if you're going for an RE vibe.

I got jumpscared once by the vampire cutscene, but otherwise it wasn't too scary. The sound cues help a lot, and I think you give the player too much ammo to feel threatened by the enemies.

It's a solid start for a game, I think. Looking forward to where you're gonna take it!

Thanks for the feedback! Yep, definitely need to decorate the game some more. Glad the puzzles turned out ok, they are the most complicated thing to change lol.

I will admit I got stuck, a couple of times, but I played it on stream so I managed to complete them. My biggest issue was with the music box puzzle. I know that it's a staple, but I'm bad at those puzzles, so I had to open the DAW and cheat by slicing up the audio and cross-referencing the notes.

I think they are fine for RE-style puzzles, but maybe some hints would be nice.

The VOD for the playthrough is up if you're interested

aha, thanks a lot for livestreaming man, really appreciate it. I did wonder about that one, its hard to judge difficulty without playtesters though. I might mark the keys in some way, then its just about guessing the order. The carpet in that room is actually supposed to be a hint, but its far too subtle lol.

The character art in the intro cutscene is pretty good, but it gets a little inconsistent later in the game (especially when the characters aren't in standing poses.) The difference between the cutscene art and the game sprites is a little jarring, as well. The background art is lacking both in cutscenes and gameplay. The dialogue is awkward and has a few grammatical inconsistencies, like only sometimes using quotes when a character is speaking.

As for the game itself, it was boring. I was just wandering the map without much purpose while killing any vampires that showed up. Items don't have interactable prompts so I spammed E on everything I saw until I found the things I needed to progress. I ended up going in circles a lot because everything looks so similar, you should make your environments more distinct and/or add a map.  Enemies not chasing you through different rooms coupled with the player having a lot of health removes any tension from the game, it doesn't feel like you're being chased and in danger. Also, it's odd how your stamina resets when you enter a different room

I'll be frank with you, I don't think this game is anywhere near being worthy of a Steam page. In its current state, it's far too barebones to catch anyone's attention. If I were you, I would polish the fuck out of the mansion level and then, and ONLY then, try to garner some attention. You're just shooting yourself in the foot by showing a half-baked product. Best of luck, I'll check in if you ever submit to another DD.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback. Lots to work on there.

the resident evil influence is clear.

i can't help but feel like that some of the drawings would feel better in higher res. there's a certain "pixel fatigue" in the air for this kind of games imho

as far as improvements are concerned they are pretty obvious, more animations for the vampires etc.

Thanks for playing, and for the feedback. Art definitely needs working on!

I’m interested in seeing where this goes but at the moment it feels a bit too simple and aimless, I need something to tell me what the goal is or how puzzles are related. Also, I felt the rooms were a bit too large for the gameplay, however, whenever I wanted to walk past a zombie by doing a feint I found the corridors were far too narrow and zombies turned too fast. I feel like the UI for the text could use being a bit tighter - text feels too big, and there’s too much empty space.

I did however like the cutscene pixelart, I hope you continue working on this!

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I'll probably add notes and maybe more cutscenes to guide the player a bit more, it's definitely something that needs work. Glad you liked the art!

Gave it a try. Fun times!

If you could get the dialogue to show the character's name in a static location while the actual dialogue loads, that'd be better.

walking and running sfx both have a weird cadence, like it's tap tap, tap tap, tap tap, instead of being evenly spaced like tap, tap, tap,

I see you fixed some of the grammatical issues since last time. Nice! I think I still caught Carmilla using "I" as the object of a sentence once, though...

The new cutscene on entering Gwen's room is nice. Jump scare got me a little. Although the first image is probably the worst spritework out of all the cutscenes.

I think the main menu is slightly off center?

I really liked the clock puzzle! Nice work.

You also fixed so that you don't shoot when tabbing back into the game. Thumbs up.

It seems like the footstep SFX is bugged when using the shotgun. It never stops playing, even when standing still.

I've never heard of an Armillary sphere before; I think "astrolabe" is a more commonly known word for it but maybe I'm crazy.

The greenhouse puzzle was very unintuitive for me. I ended up just brute forcing it. How were you supposed to figure it out?

Overall this game is turning out very nicely! Thanks for letting us try it out.

Developer

Hey, thanks for playing it AGAIN and for the detailed feedback, I really do appreciate it. Lots to work on there!

Just to answer your question, when you turn a valve in the greenhouse, it either plays a flowing water sound or a gurgling, draining sound. They are all supposed to be set in the 'draining' position. Haven't put notes and journals etc Into the game yet, but i'll probably leave one with a heavy hint at what you're supposed to do there. Also, Glad the clock puzzle is getting some love by people, haha.

A very nice game and thanks for the Zombie jumpscare!

I did like the cutscenes and the art style you went with for the game.  The art so far is consistent and of a good quality.

In my opinion I think the biggest improvement you can make is with the U.I especially the dialogue boxes and text formatting.  Once they match the rest of the game's style they will look good. Maybe add a small picture to highlight who is talking, or a different text colour for each character?

As someone else mentioned, I do think more variations on each rooms would look better too.

Overall this is an enjoyable game, its impressive especially as it is an early version as it states in your description.

Developer

Thanks for playing and for the feedback, hope it didn't make you jump too much ;). Ui definitely needs working on, I love the idea of having the characters pic next to the text, definitely adding that!

Thoroughly enjoyed it. The puzzles were very good. I'd say the combat is too easy. The zombies never posed any threat. The game could also really do with a map and to rearrange the rooms into a more logical pattern. Currently it feels too maze like. I'm sure it'll be a lot better if you can differentiate the rooms with different textures. I'd also say the intro cutscene is too long and I forgot I was playing a survival horror game and not a visual novel. Also, try making the vn text be locked in place rather than shifting around, because its very hard to read. Overall good job, I'll happily play future updates.

Developer

Thanks for playing, and the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the puzzles, aswell, that was the msot worrying bit for me!

Don't see any quit button on main menu or options settings.

But I still managed to finish it and I'm glad I figured out the puzzles, even the clock one.

It was a neat experience.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback, and well done for finishing. Glad you solved the puzzles, it's hard to judge difficulty when you're the one who made them lol.

If audio is fucked, try closing and restarting, otherwise, just mute it. Theres not that much audio in yet anyway. Sorry!
