Submission of the Alternative Soundtrack - Music Jam #4

Track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3ZazPMiZhY

The choice of instrumentation was based on the character design (boss Coral Riff). As for the BPM, it corresponds to the animation time of the character's movement.

About the composition, It's an experiment that revolves around the bass to which I decided to give it a more cantabile approach instead of just playing the root notes mixed with elements of OSTs that I enjoy like Deaths's Door and Hollow Knight and also dungeon music from several JRPGs.

Very little by little I'm encouraging myself to use synths.

Let me know what you liked!!

It is good. I can see it for a more dungeon crawling game. I must say the contrabass from beginning to end is a little too loud and taking all the attention. Maybe lowering its volume a little bit and bringing the others up could help.

Mixing is one of the stages that I have a lot to learn from. Thanks for letting me know what to improve!

I loved the ghostly influences, along with the orchestral flirtation. I managed to get a picture of Bernard Herrmann driving a kart on the ghost track in Mario Kart 64. Congratulations!

A silly detail of mine: your composition has super-creative sections that could be repeated with changes or progressions that would make the music longer and the auditory memory more active. In other words, your music makes me want to listen to it again and again, because it's so much fun - but all the section is very short.

You just pictured the coolest crossover!! hahaha

I'll definitely take into account what you tell me about the auditory memory in my next compositions. Thank you very much for the feedback!!!

Yes, I want to know more about your compositions!

Sorry for randomly popping in this thread but "Bernard Herrmann driving a kart on the ghost track in Mario Kart 64" is quite possibly one of my favorite musical analogies ever 😂

Hahahahhaha, I truly felt for it too when I wrote it XD

Ooh, this one was interesting.  Intro was cool and ominous, I like the tension created by the measure of dissonance in the contrabass followed by the half and whole guitar notes. The violin melody and bass counterpoint worked really well, especially with the synth pad providing an ominous ambience. Song builds up chaotic tension as other instruments pop in with their melodies and the increased tempo provides quite a bit of exciting tension towards the end (along with the drums and arps). If I were to gripe about anything, I found the ending to be a little bit too abrupt (and honestly I just kinda' wish the song was longer, you've got something good going on here).

Developer

Thank you very much for the feedback. I truly appreciate it!! I think you're right, the ending sounds too soon the way I presented it. It was designed so that the track loops from end to 0:12.

I love the OST for Death's Door, excited to see you mention it! I definitely hear the influence. Cool piece over all, I like the more orchestral approach. The synths at 0:48 make a very cool effect, don't be afraid of them :D

Hi Katie! Thank you for your kind words!!  Working with synths is very new for me so for now I'm adding little by little since it's trial and error for me.

I see why your preference for my track was to have the strings louder 😅 VERY strong usage of strings here, they give good tension! I love the use of instruments from traditionally different genres here too!

I think your use of synths here is great, it really ties it back to the necromancer sound. I can also definitely hear the influence of the games you described above..

Well done!

Developer

Thank you so much!! 😂Yeah, putting aside my personal taste, it was just a suggestion since I think that melodic design of the strings worked very well in your composition.

I really like it! I enjoy the balance between classical instruments and the composition. Cool song and congrats 🙌🏽

Muchas gracias Sandra!! Acabo de escuchar tu música y es excelente, me ha gustado mucho. Felicitaciones!!

Interesting take using acoustic and classical instruments for this. Really like the end with the accentuation and ostinato paterns can feel a nice tension for a boss fight.

It was a fun puzzle to solve, making both sounds work well together throughout the entire track. I'm about to listen yours!
