Track description | Creative process
I wanted to create something that fit the musical ideas of the overall game while sticking to the general theme of the boss fight.

In the OST of the game, there is:

1. Consistently strong rhythm within each track
2. One/two strong leitmotifs within each individual track, with strong repetition and slight variation
3. Usage of instrumentation of very different styles (mix of electronic/non-electronic instruments)
4. Usage of music from very different genres (this is especially true in the boss fights!)

In the spirit of the points listed above, I wanted to make a track that stuck with the theme of a water/ocean type boss, but reimagined the theme to be more of a fight in stormy weather 🌊

In the actual boss fight, you're fighting against an ensemble of instruments. I didn't want to replicate exactly the instrumentation used in the original track, but I kept to the spirit of it by including some strings, woodwind, bass, and an acoustic and electric guitar (plus drums). I imagined the different sounds and instrumentation to create an ebb and flow of tension like waves in stormy weather.

Lastly, I stuck with a couple of really simple leitmotifs that signify the different instrumentation in the boss fight and varied them slightly over the track.

I like the variations on the main motiff you made.

It's got that 'easy listening boss fights to study to' vibe. I like it!

Nice groove and good ideas and analysis, but I think it lacks some punchiness, like some synth or brass to cut the mix and give more "strength" to your track, like the original does. But everything feels balanced and sounds good, and the groove of your drums and bass is very well crafted.

Thanks for listening and the constructive feedback! Adding layers in a way that makes the music sound punchy and full while not making it sound too busy is something that I struggle with, but I’m working on improving that so feedback like yours is really helpful!

The percussion opening is a nice touch! I like that you keep a strong focus on the melody and the bass without letting too much get in the way, it's a really nice balance of voices and overall a cool track. Definitely get the sense of stormy weather, great job!

Hi! Very cool that you shared your insights. I love the rock vibe you went for AND the use of the strings that you made at 1:03 (I wish they were a little louder, but this is just a personal preference haha).

Well done!

Thank you for listening and for the feedback! A part of me wanted to make the string runs you described louder during composition too, but I made a last minute decision to put it in the background instead because I felt like it took too much away from the strong rhythmic feel.

I did listen to it again on a different pair of headphones with a slightly different sound profile and I agree that it can sound a little bit quiet! Maybe I can do something in the mix in the future to make quiet parts like that stand out more!

I really feel the boss ambiance, just stressfull enough during the whole song, nice!

Nicely done, I like the mix of textures between the rock/metal at first and more mellow acoustic vibe.

Thank you for listening! I enjoyed playing around with the textures in this piece!
