I completed the game. It's funny, the solution to the very last puzzle is the exact same as in another game in the jam although it makes sense as it's a very appropriate conclusion of this type of starting over and over again in the same but not same dungeon.

The game is fun. The UI, enemies and wall textures all look great and the game controls well with a functional inventory and point & clicking. I'm not specially fan of this (mundane) type of combat and waiting in real-time for mana to recharge but since enemies die in two hits and constant level ups mean waiting for mana to recharge is more of a rare case which is even due to the player not targetting the enemies properly rather than a norm it is alright here, especially as the visual feedback for attacking is pretty cool (for enemy attacking too).

The dungeon is pretty good, it's a very good implementation of the themes as the different parts both feel samey while being actually different, it's quite fun to solve . The narrative in notes enhances the pacing too.

I had to play the Web version as the current download version (old one when you asked in the forums for feedback worked) gives me the "black" screen and on an older pc of mine I have got two problems as the game lags and not the entire screen is displayed, the game is still playable but I can't drink potion (and can't equip the torch but have not noticed if it was important).

This is a cool entry, thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the kind feedback!

I could not make this run on my computer for some reason. Well it sun, but the screen is mostly black rendering it hard to play.

I tried restarting the game several times, and even the computer but still have same issue.

Developer

i haven't encountered this bug, yet. can you try to disable post processing? maybe your graphics card is not able to handle it (double click the wrench icon)

Submitted

Yeah, no luck there. I have played all games in the jam now. One game I had to restart because it was black, but then it worked. Your game sadly nothing seems to work.

I got a "Radeon Vega 56" and run 4 screens with it.

Developer

Ok that should definitely be enough on the graphics card side. But not sure how to fix this. I have thrown this game on to 6 - 8 year old laptops and it worked fine. Don't have the Vega hardware to test it sadly.

Host

I have the same problem. All the intro graphics are almost completely black and ingame I can't see a thing and I get killed without knowing wth happened. I have Nvidia 2060 RTX.

Developer

i'll try to compile a web gl build in unity for the people that have this problem. give me minute. never done that before. not sure what it'll look like on web though. maybe different problems

Developer

i got an idea: can you run it inside a virtual machine? i testet that with vmwareplayer and windows 10 vm and it worked. maybe that is a workaround to get it to display correctly.

Developer

https://wooolfy.itch.io/cosmc-horror-web-version
(this is the same build as web version. i tried it out a couple of minutes but it is not testet thouroughly at all. also i never made a web build before... so try at own risk). but at least it should be playable for you now. just remember: save/load might crash the game on web so don't try it

Submitted (1 edit) (+1)

Yeah, that seems to work without issues.

EDIT: Save and Load seems to work in webbuild as well. Was the first thing I tried.... :)

Developer

Oh wow cool! Thanks!

Well, it was not saved after reloading browser, but during one play.

Got lost after a while. I think I locked myself into the long surrounding corridor by interacting with a switch and going inside.

Developer

you can't lock yourself inside. i made a seperate exit with a hidden button at the end of the long corridor. also you need to find another hidden button inside the long corridor to progress. just look at the wall textures while walking through, it is clearly marked ;-)

Submitted (1 edit)

There is no end, it just loops round and round. I think you are thinking of another hidden door/wall. I have run around 5 loops checking all walls.

Developer

I can upload a playthrough

Hm, I am torn, the game looks great, sounds great and plays well. The movement is solid and I really like the inventory stuff. While basic, the experience system is just right for such a short jam. But I see so many stolen graphics, that is just not cool. Many of us used AI art, which has its own problems, but you ripped the UI straight out of Waxworks, the wall out of EOB and I think the flasks come from Legend of Kyrandia. Please make your own stuff next time. But the entry itself is really solid and well done.

I beat the game once and liked it. My thoughts on the game:

Intro is very good with the voice acting but  a little long perphaps. The artwork in the cutscenes look very nice.  You managed to capture the old school DOS game vibe very nicely. As someone else mentioned, the textures look like they are straight from Eye of the Beholder 1 Sewer Level but it's fine, they look good. Enemies art is very good and scary but i wish there were more enemy types. Love the illusory walls detail. You did a distortion there like breaking of light, it looks very nice. You could've added chests too. Drag and drop inventory works perfectly. Weapons and additional spells would be nice too. Btw i love casting lightning spell effect. I think the artwork in general is AI generated but they looks great. Don't know which AI image  generator you used but i think it's a perfect utilization of AI in making a video game.

Kudos for your work and good luck.

Theme was spot on. I loved the creepy sound effects and the mood of the dungeon. Telling the story and explaining mechanics with little pieces of paper was great. I had trouble getting my sanity meter to fall very much - I know that sanity goes up when not in combat - from that I assumed it would go down when in combat. So I tried to spend a lot of time dancing around monsters without finishing them off but the lowest I could get my sanity was 8. Overall a fun experience.

thanks for the feedback!

Voice acting! In a game jam!? Everything looks so polished. The textures looks like you ripped them right out of Eye of the Beholder. There's a little bug where you can move onto the same square as an enemy (I have the same bug). I couldn't find the exit out of the 2nd level and I couldn't go more insane as directed because I had already killed all the enemies. The minimap is great, one improvement would be if it filled in spaced you could already see instead of just the ones you walked on. Please make a clear way to quit the game. I hate having to use task manager to exit when it forces full screen. Otherwise, great job.

Got caught up in a few panic moments when I was trying to strafe but turned, or tried to turn but strafed, led to some funny chaotic moments which was great :D.

Also really loved how you could just pick up and place stuff down in the world. that was a really nice touch that I spent a few minutes just messing with.

Art was real nice, vibe was good, and the monsters looked really cool.

thank you!

I dig it.

The intro with voice over was cool. Maybe a bit to long.
Controls are smooth. But I do like pure keyboard control more - way nicer with laptop on the couch. :D
And I did not find a way to exit the game - except AltF4.

Art Style is cool and the insanity effect.

Nice work!

Developer

thank you!

Pros:

Controls and movement felt nice, The combat was straight forward, and the art was consistently good.

Cons:

ran into a bug (Maybe?) where my sanity dropped and i got the fish eye effect, but it didn't go away when my sanity went back to 10, also couldn't pick up papers when the fish eye effect was present. also no way to close the game that I could find.

Developer

sorry to hear. Yes I think that's a bug :-( If the effects don't work you can disable them by double clicking the wrench
