Really cool game! I can really see how much effort there is in making this game. I like the fact that you can choose between adult and kids mode and they are very different!

Submitted

So i played in adults mode and that may explain why it was laggy at times i guess, since i played the web version.

The projectile lifespan seems quiet high i think since you could hit enemies offscreen.

The houses in the levels(i played till level 2) don't quiet fit with the other assets but that's just how i see it in a sense,i'm talking about the detail they have.

Story wise,i'm not really into stories so i didn'y pay much attention to it,i'm more about gameplay.

In level 2 it's a little annoying when you are on a moving platform wanna jump onto ground but there's an enemy offscreen that comes back to get you. Also the turrets(The red things that shoot at you) in level 2 they are sometimes too close to you, you are on a lower platform and want to jump on a higher platform but there's a turret above you and bump into it.

In level 1 there are falling platforms, are they adjusted to fall at different times or not adjusted properly?

Since some let you on the for longer than others.

The dad's jumping sound is a little weird and loud what can i say.

Not sure how enemy spawn works but in level 1 you need 15 kills so in case you miss 1 or 2 snails, how do they spawn or are there respawns? I did beat the level obviously but i had to backtrack a little bit since i missed 1 snail and got him.

Would a map be a good idea? See if there are enemies left/where they are?

I did like that there was a kill bar, very helpful.

I didn't play with the blaster,i did try it a bit but it didn't do anything since i didn't have any energy left so yeah..i sticked with the normal attack, seems good enough and it's nice that it has a slight knockback to it.

Also the ledge climb/stick mechanic is good in case you don't quiet land right because of the moving platforms.

Keep in mind that i'm not into platformers so some things i said may be good feedback or not.

Thanks again for checking my game out.

Good game man! Kid and adult mode is very interesting to me. I love the simplicity of it and the voice acting was actually pretty good!

I enjoyed playing it, it is a nice simple game, but I don't know if the problem is with my PC, but the game is laggy.

Developer(+1)

I see, thank you for the feedback.. Was this on WebGL? As the performance there is usually a bit worse.

Nope, I downloaded the game and played it on my PC.

Good platformer game. I played “adult” mode and the control is ~~a bit~~ very chunky for me. Switching between static and moving blaster wasn’t intuitive even after a dozen minutes of play. Dialogue is advanced by “E” but clicking shots pellets instead, draining the ammo. I think that the first issue is that “you never know what’s behind the screen”. I know many platformers indeed exploit this feature to have the Player memorize the level and “do it better on the next run”, but I’m not fan of losing hearts because the snail is there and you’ve just jumped off a moving platform, or falling to death trying to understand where are you supposed to go. FPS-related shimmering on moving platforms is annoying but bearable :) The far background is too boring + some objects look like foreground objects (found myself twice trying to jump on a platform which actually was in the background). Fell from platform in the start of the second area to infinity beyond (after killed snails, removed the red light, and going a long ride on horizontal moving platform). Red colors are irritating to the eyes. Yes, I’m nitpicking here, but as the author mentioned “Will probably release this one on steam” I’m writing this comment (not rating) based on “game dev is 20% fun 80% hard work” - this game still needs some polishing done. Overall the game promises to be real fun.

Hi, thank you so much for the thorough feedback! It helps a lot. I will make sure to look at those points and try to improve upon them after this Jam! Thanks once again!

First off, I just want to applaud you for this idea of introducing kids to platformers. There's so many kids games that are like educational and stuff but I've never seen anything like this. And the fact that the same game can be played in kids and adults mode would probably result in so much parent-child bonding! Kids wanting to play the game, just like their parents!

I also really appreciate that while the game is in kids mode, the story is not "watered down" , like the stuff with the dad talking about his job, all the beer stuff etc. Yes kids might not fully understand that, but it's kinda just showing the world as it is! The dynamic between Emily and her father feels so genuine! It really gives the game charm.

I personally think the voice acting in the kids version, subtitling in the adult version is brilliant! I think you could even add more to it... you mention your target age with kids mode is 4-6 right? Since a lot of kids that age can't quite read yet... I'm not sure they'd be able to understand the signs like "moving platform" or "beach elevator."

The solution...?

What if Emily had some voice acting lines too!

Maybe... you can add the E to interact feature into kids mode but instead of interact, it can be "explain" and Emily explains a little more about the signs/platforming mechanics like "this sign says moving platform. I think it will move were I need to go when I stand on it!" or "I should pass under the crystal after it goes up" ... or maybe even after Emily falls off the edge "ouch! I definitely don't want to get that close to the edge again!" That way kids can really get immersed in learning how to platform, and with Emily's voice, they can relate to her character even more and feel like they're learning alongside her. And for kids who already know how to read, maybe there can be an older kids / younger kids switch that turns "E" on and off!

Also, I love how hardcore adult mode is haha. A genuine challenge! I had a lot of fun with it and definitely intend to go back and finish it.

Really really great work here. Hope the suggestions are useful to you for future developments! I cannot wait to see what's to come for the future of this game. I hope it takes off and inspires a new generation of gamers!

Thank you so much for taking the time playing both modes and also giving this great thorough feedback! Really appreciated! You got also some good points there, and I will see if I can implement some voice acting of Emily's side. Might be a bit too tricky for my daughter of four to pull it off in all four languages haha! But thank you so much for the suggestions!

Summer Stone (8yo) enjoyed the kids mode

I watched and laughed

very fun! You are a crazy dude!

Developer

Ah that is awesome! I suppose he got through it fairly easy! Thank you for the feedback. It's the best when kids play it to see if kids mode is any good haha

The lights were very well-done! It felt like a rich environment despite the 2D game area.

Developer

Thank you for your kind feedback!

I really liked the lighting effects in general and how the attacks work, as well as the background feel, my only thing would be that it feels like there is a lot of empty space which is a personal preference thing, good job!

Developer

Thank you for the feedback! Yes in adult mode the background is a bit boring and also several feedbacks point it out! I will improve this after the Jam!

It feels odd to have no voice and subtitles in adult mode, and voice but no subtitles in kids mode.

The moving platform feels laggy. base.transform.position = Vector3.MoveTowards(base.transform.position, this.nextPos, this.speed * Time.deltaTime); looks solid though so maybe you are not basing your character correctly.

Developer (1 edit)

Thanks for the comment, I noticed it as well on some platforms. It is probably the groundcheck of the player. Will try to fix this!^^
Kids cannot really click away the texts or subtitles and it is just in their eyes (at least for my daughter and most kids who have played 4-6 year olds). I believe adults would be more annoyed by my voice then anything else haha so it was a conscious choice.

This game was very well-made! I loved the effects. The jumping and move mechanics worked very smoothly. Usually platformer games the hitboxes are an issue, but for this I thought it was very fair. I liked the theme and the atmosphere as well! The GUI for conversations was also very well done! I can very much tell a lot of effort was put into it and I really congratulate you for being able to do a game as a one-man team! Definitely requires a lot of dedication, time, and effort for sure. I also loved that you were thoughtful to include different languages. Me personally I am a huge language-learning lover. So I found it very nice that you incorporated that into the game as well. I also liked the fact that you include kids as an audience for your game. I thought it was a nice way to tie into easy and hard mode. The adult mode at certain parts were very challenging and took me a while to pass through, so if I were being nitpicky I would say scale the difficulty down a little bit. But honestly, what's a game without a little bit of challenge!

Overall, wonderful job! Thanks for making this game, I enjoyed it a lot!

This was a really great game! You can clearly see all the effort that went into it. At first I chose Dutch as the language, but then I was confused since everything was in English anyway. But when I chose the child version I was really suprised that it actually had voice acting! That is really impressive! For 4 different languages! Great job! I am Dutch myself, and I have been studying some Japanese, so it was fun to hear the same story in three different languages, haha

I also really appreciated the two modes, one for children and one for adults. It was a lot of fun to see the world in two different 'universes' if you will. Maybe one point of critique I have is that the game stays relatively easy for quite a long time. At least for the adult version, I think it would be cool if the difficulty scaled a bit faster, and that maybe the different guns have different uses. I liked the idea of having multiple weapons, but for me I stayed with the mouse-click-gun since that felt the most easy for me.
Thanks for this game! Hopfefully this is at least a bit helpful! 今からも頑張ってね!

Developer

Yo bro thanks a lot for the feedback! Lekker op zijn Engels ;-) Appreciate that you played the different modes as well! Adult mode is indeed doable the first couple levels... I think the last couple of levels are challenging! In the past I had the feedback that it was too hard in general so I scaled it down a bit and removed a lot of spikes or also losing life's when falling.

Anyhow! Bedankt voor het testen mate! ^^

I really like the game a lot especially with how different kids mode is; it isn't just an easier version of adult mode. One thing is that I would've preferred if changing blaster modes was right mouse click since I would be able to react faster to changing it but that's just a small nick pick.

Great work! :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for the feedback! I will add the function of changing mode after the jam! ^^ Will probably release this one on steam after getting all feedbacks and updating it!

Man you've put a crazy amount of work into this! The different translations are fantastic and it's insane that you voiced them all yourself. Really good stuff, this feels like the kind of game you could get on Nintendo Switch and it'd do well.

Loved the humour. The art style's great and your characters really pop.

Did you also make the music yourself? It's great. The beach theme reminds me of Spongebob.

Developer

Thank you kindly for the comment bro! Appreciate it! Most of the music I got from YouTube library, as that would be too good to also make that haha.. But all the rest I pretty much made leaving out one or two assets which I picked up!
