Game description
Play with 1-4 players to be the stealthiest Secret Ingredient in this couch party game (playable single-player too). As a Secret Ingredient, you must disguise yourself with other flavors to conceal your true nature. You have two minutes to collect the perfect combination of sauces and spices from around the kitchen before your target arrives.

Aim with your mouse or joystick and press and hold to charge a jump in that direction. Run into containers to make them release their contents and collect them to add them to your flavor profile. Keep an eye on the marks on each flavor bar to remind you what flavor you’re aiming for.

We didn't join the game jam until the 14th, so we focused solely on the main game mechanics to get a fully functional end-to-end prototype of the local multiplayer version of the game, which means we didn't get to add all the things we hoped to like music/sounds, better results screens, online multiplayer, character selection, multiple kitchens/maps, ragdoll-ish models, and cleaned up visuals overall. But... we're proud of getting the full concept to where it is and will keep working on it past this game jam.

Theme interpretation
From the start, we wanted to do something different. We figured a lot of people would do mystery or detective games, secret passages, keeping secrets, and so on. As we were discussing some options, we almost accidentally mentioned "secret ingredient" as a phrase and we realized that we'd been thinking about doing a cooking/flavor-based party game for a while and this would be a great opportunity to go for it.

Fun game, but it's not clear what ingredients do what. For some reason the music and sound effects don't play for me, is it a bug or not? If there still will be time left for rating games, could you play and rate mine? Good job!

Developer

Thanks for playing. What you described isn't a bug. We just didn't have time to incorporate sounds and music (and a lot of other things) that we've added after the submission deadline, but have left off itch.io so far to not give the impression we had all that done during the jam time window. We'll be publishing a version after voting ends that will add sounds, more player characters, simpler flavor profiles, indicators to show what food gives what flavor, and a few other visual and gameplay improvements. Thanks for playing! We'll try to check yours out before the voting deadline today.

The poor unused eggplant! I enjoyed knocking the hot sauce out of the fridge and rolling around in it:) Great job with the amount of time you had!

Developer(+1)

We're glad you enjoyed it and that you found the eggplant 😁 Don't feel too sorry for him. In the post-jam update, you'll be able to play as the eggplant and a few other characters. There will also be a bunch of other finishing touches we didn't have time for like music, sound effect, visual effects, simpler flavor mechanics, flavor collection counters, and eventually control settings, etc. Thanks for playing!

Lovely concept / theme interpretation, nice art and UI, moving around is difficult but fun! Gameplay-wise it felt a bit too unclear what to do... what ingredients can be picked up and to what effect (how to lower a flavor)? R.i.p. unused player model :( Nice work!

Thanks for playing! We couldn't agree more with all your feedback. Noted for the post game jam version 🙂

Glad you found the little secret. That was a last second touch we added when we realized we wouldn't be able to finish the player selector before the deadline.

Fun and weird. Well done.

I really love this concept. I wish it had better controls, however. I was struggling to move my character around. I think with that and a bit of upgraded art, this could be really popular! Good work!

Super fun and innovative concept. I love the idea and functional multiplayer is great. Kind of feels like a somehow even more unhinged take on Katamari Damacy. Also kind of like a golf game is in there too? I think the timer is a bit short but I did manage to get a C so that's pretty good.  I also felt like the camera kind of hated me, you might look how golfing games do their camera for inspiration. Overall a really great and weird approach, I love the creativity shown here and it fits the theme so well. Great job

Developer

Thanks for all the kind words and feedback/tips! We're glad you enjoyed it.

We thought of a question for you. You mentioned the camera not liking you. Were you using your mouse or did you download it to be able to use a gamepad? We're curious what control scheme you were using and what was off about it. The mouse sensitivity can also be a pain. We didn't have much time to test what a good sensitivity level would be for the average player. Thanks again for you comments.

I did use a controller. It was mostly when I was trying to angle up the object could kind of clip in and out of existence while I was trying to line up my shot, also the rotation around speed was pretty slow so if trying to set up another shot in quick succession I'd be slowly orbiting the item for a couple seconds.

Developer

Got it. Thanks for the extra detail. We had a version where we don't have the camera zoom inside the character and instead keeps the same distance and simply let's your camera essentially see through the floor (from the bottom, if that makes any sense). Sounds like there could be some benefits to us going with that version or at least adding in that option through the settings screen we wanted to add but didn't have time. We really appreciate you taking the time to give us the extra info.

It is a Fun, weird, game of its own

Developer

We'll take fun and weird 😄

Thanks for playing!

Your game is original, I would say weird, but a bit anticlimactic at the end, I mean no one ate me it just gave me the statistics. Also, I wished changing the taste would change how brokolli looks, but it's not significant. I guess it is more fun to play it online so you can compete with other people. Maybe we will try it later, but still, good job!

Developer

Thanks for playing! You're speaking our language. We didn't realize the jam started until the 17th, so we were a little short on time. We focused entirely on getting it functional from end to end without any of the extras we dreamed of. There were a few things we wanted to do to make the ending of a round feel more fun, including what you mentioned. We want to make the player change color/shape as you change flavor too.

As for multiplayer, I hope you get a chance to try it out, but keep in mind it only supports local/split-screen multiplayer so far and only if you install the Windows version - for some reason the gamepads don't seem to register correctly on web.

Thanks for playing and for the feedback.
