The atmosphere is amazing! I was generally impressed by the use of lighting for both atmosphere and level design, and didn’t have any trouble clearing through the game. I do wish the enemies responded to bullets with a pause or stutter as there were points where it felt like taking a hit was unavoidable.

I have one primary issue. There is a section towards the end of the game with dark hallways that spell out instant death. For enemy deaths, I can understand a restart… but this random instant death nearly kept me from finishing the game as I was very frustrated by having to start over from the beginning. A checkpoint system would have helped greatly with this.

I also think the player controller could use a little higher step height, but otherwise I had a great time going through this entry. The atmosphere was top notch, the story didn’t get overexplained, and the visuals were highly engaging while making use of its PSX limitations well. The audio design is the best I’ve seen this jam and the pacing (other than the restart I mentioned) feels reasonable.

Thanks for the submission!

Hi, sorry about the void doors. I originally planned on having different rooms in that section of game that you could enter, but I ran out of time to design them. The stairs in that area was particularly fucked too xD Thank you for the feedback and I'm glad you liked other aspects of the game. I'll definitely be making the necessary improvements once the jam ends.

Really spooky one ! Retro style and atmosphere is very cool.

Submitted(+1)

i adore a good retro 3d style and you really nailed it!
2 simple little things, that i would add to the atmosphere:
find a style for the UI elements that fit to the retro 3d art style - especially the crosshair stands out as too detailed.
and 2nd: while I get that silence can be super scary, I think if you mix it up with some background noises, it could greatly the intensity... but that's just my 2 cents.

Developer

I appreciate your feedback! We'll definitely work more on our UI art and the audio for our game :) I'm glad you like the look we went for

Very creepy, especially the shadow guys. All around a very good atmosphere and an impressive project for 10 days. My only feedback would be the first set of stairs coming back up from what I think was the police station (needed the badge to initially enter), I couldnt just walk up them, I had to keep jumping up. The 2nd stairs worked fine though a bit jittery. Great job on this submission!

Developer

Thank you for playing. I did mess up the stairs and step height there, so that's very high on my list of things to fix :)

This was really nicely done. The lighting was perfect for the feel of this game. I got creepy vibes the whole time I was playing. The mechanics were solid. The environmental story telling was spot on. I really liked this entry. Great Job!

A good reminder that horror is about the unseen more than the seen - great atmosphere

Fantastic job. Loved the ps1 style and the really moody atmosphere. The writing was interesting and kept me wanting to read more and those dark figures showing up in unexpected places had me looking over my shoulder. What a great experience. I beat the game, but  I'm also looking forward to whatever comes next.

Nice game. Works pretty well and has great audio as well. But as others said before... After about 5 min I decided that it was enough darkness for me. Congratulations on the submission.

Wow, the scream I made when the first shadowy person appeared right on my face lol I scared the hell out of my cats

Great game, great music! Just love it!

Pretty cool game. Spooky climate is really well done with perfectly chosen music and sound

Submitted(+2)

Nope, thanks. I chickenned out.

Good game! :D I just don't like horror lol

Developer(+2)

LOL, that's funny, but thank you for commenting :D Funny story, our 3D artist for this absolutely refuses to play our own game even to playtest xD

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

AHAHAHAHA BRUH, i have played the first version and that was enuf for me. and i backseat gamed a lot when i watch u and our boi sneasnake play XD.
Yes i did chicken out after getting 2 or 3 notes. XD
I cant help it okay. But i promise to play after all my work is done irl TwT.

Developer(+2)

same XD, the fence opened and there was a loud sound, i screamed and just noped out of the game XD.
My heart can only take so much

Submitted(+2)

Spooky atmosphere, the black creepy guys add to that as well. Seems I was not the only one climbing trees here, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to jump over the fence from there ;) Great potential to be turned into some longer game. Keep creating!

Developer

Haha, yeah a good amount of people on here have been climbing the trees xD It forced me to put an invisible wall over there so people don't speedrun to the badge lol. Thanks for playing :)

Great game, really impressed with what you achieved in only 10 days

Developer

Thank you! It's been a fun jam <3

The PS1 style graphics are incredible, and work very well with the spooky setting!

The level design is also very good and just easy enough to navigate, making the necessary backtracking not feel like a chore while also making exploration interesting.

Amazing piece of art. The visuals, the audio and the gameplay combine harmoniously.

Developer

Thanks for playing, Mr. Snake Remake! I adore your game a lot

Played and rated. I really enjoyed playing for a while.

Pros

  • Visual style is great and fits  the horror theme
  • Gameplay was smooth, nothing bothered me
  • The ambient sound and sound effects are nice
  • The map design is awesome, easy to understand progression

Cons

  • The monsters lack scary sound effects
  • A scary music and jumpscare stings would have made the scary aspect more pronounced
  • I died from the void doors which wasn't fun, didn't want to restart all over :(

Overall a great game with a gameplay we can be invested in and that has a fitting and nice visual style, that only lacks more ambient and scary sound effects. Fantastic work! :)

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing. I like feedback where the negatives are listed this way. I've been getting some similar comments about the void doors and people falling into them, and I'm very sorry it impacted the experience. I do hope you give it another run some other time and get to the end! I wanted to add rooms there but ran out of time, so I'll probably put invisible walls there for now instead. I totally agree with your sound and music criticism as well. I'll be adding more sounds to the various things in the game and even more ambience in unique locations. The enemies will also get more animations such as getting staggered.

Really good game! Great mechanics and I love the graphics style! Congrats!

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thank you! Omg you're the guy who did Nanni 2. I meant to show your game to the person who did our 3D assets cuz she adores graphics like yours. I'll tell her :)

Submitted(+1)

lovely visuals and setting, great notes.

needs better enemies and shooting system

Developer

Thanks for playing and I appreciate the feedback. I would definitely work more on this game and improve it based on people's comments :)

Submitted(+2)

The graphics are great. The concept is also nice. Thanks for this game. What shader did you use for the graphics mate?

Developer(+1)

No shader, I projected the image of the first person camera into a render texture and used a 2nd camera as the actual display for the game. Lowered its resolution and used point filtering, and did the same for all the textures to give it a crispy ps1 look. The rest are post-processing :)

It would be nice if you could adjust the sensitivity. How does the theme fit with this game? The art looks awesome.

Developer (1 edit) (+2)

I plastered the theme all over the game with the little notes that you find throughout the map. There's a bit of a story that you slowly uncover as you explore the game and unlock new areas, though it is very subtle and hint out at a larger story surrounding the town. I encourage you to explore a bit more :) Thanks for playing! Love your game.

Oh sorry, I was killed a few times without seeing something get to me. So it turned me off. Sorry I missed out on the notes and signs.
