A simple vertical platformer with lovely art. Bugged checkpoints were a bit of a let down, but with some clever platforming I was still able to complete the game (even after a lot of falls). I dare to say, with some clever level design this bug could become a feature, at least for higher difficulties. Main mechanic of (de)activating the platforms was interesting, but in current form a little useless. With less linear level design it could be very potent in maze/puzzle levels. I would love to see upgraded versions of this game.
Game Designer Jesse Schell says, that there are two kinds of themes in games. Experience-based (commonly found), and truth-based. Truth-based themes can be much stronger than experience-based ones, and little is required to have the theme resonate in the minds and hearts of players.
And Bring Me To Light brings, well, a truth to light. The game is so much given so little. The controls are messy, the level is tiny, the only music is in the ending, and there are several bugs and inconsistencies. But the truth, hidden inside, shadows all of these.
Also, the moth animation is great. 10/10
The broken checkpoints sadly weaken the experience, and I don't really have the patience to try again and again from the start :/ but I appreciate the attempt at implementing them <3
The idea is quite interesting, as in gathering orbs from platforms and putting them in different platforms to make them appear. I quite enjoyed this mechanic! Plus the respawning animation? Both felt pretty satisfying. If improved, this could be a solid platformer.
If fixed, this game could be really cool. 🙏
Hey, you are a moth! You love lights a loth. But in this game you move more like a slot- okay, the moth in this game cannot fly to a light directly but has to jump over platforms. This seems “inside out” to me a lot, although I am not sure it was intended, as other ingredients are used much more profoundly - there is a festival lantern that serves as a lighthouse calling moths to their ultimate fate. Nicely drawn (with the exception of gray blocks that just don’t fit those hand drawn curved platforms) platformer with a deep story point and a mechanic of orbs that fuel platforms is spoiled by not well implemented checkpoints (that return platforms to their original positions) has quite a potential that I definitely want to see developed into a full fledged fairy tale adventure/platformer game.
