this is going to sound weird, but I rate this game very well even thought I suck at it haha. But it has such a cool design, it adheres to the theme, and it's sure as heck is original. I don't have the patience for it haha, but I really appreciated the aesthetic and the theme. and I'm assuming it's actually real legit morse code , so the game is teaching something

Developer

Thanks!! The control scheme is definitively a niche audience type of thing. The  source code with the legic Morse code can be found here by clicking on code, if you're interested.

Hey there, I played through some of your game in this video at around 14:35

Developer

Thank you so much. "It's quite fun to get the hang of playing it" is such a rewarding thing to hear!!

Cool concept. I liked the world design with the puzzle built into it. It's just a bit slow - as I'm sure you know from the other comments. Maybe allow a space press or something to repeat the previous command? So that way you can move quickly from one spot to another. I don't think it would need much changed, just a little thing like that. Again, cool idea, nice art style too! It's  the sort of game you could lose yourself in and the hours fly by :D

Developer

Thank you so much for the comments. I really wanted the commands to be actual morse code so  I added the "a"gain command instead of a single dash. I actually had the z button clear the current morse code word in a more complex version of the game (where you had to type 'move' then 'forward' not just 'f'...image how slow that would be!!), then my wife was like..."isn't the whole theme only one...?" lol.

This is amazing, super interesting take on the concept. The gameplay is a little slow paced, but even so I could see myself playing this for hours

Developer

Someone streamed it and said "imagine morse code speed runs" and honestly my mind went bananas! I think with a more refined morse code system the game could play as fast as the old morse code mesages played. Thank you for trying the game!

Submitted

Oh god speedruns of that would be the coolest thing ever! Have a camera on the x button to show how what they are actually doing.

I have to say this idea is very original. I liked the puzzle aspect of the mechanics, it's all really clever and well executed. But I have to say that I think that the gameplay is too slow and cumbersome, you spend more time executing the commands than solving the puzzles themselves. But yeah, seeing that lots of people liked it, maybe it's just me?

Hahaha, anyway, I have to commend your implementation of the concept. It's all very well thought. Congratulations!

Developer(+1)

It is definitively a slow game due to the control scheme. Thank you for trying the game!

Wow super cool design, I've never done morse-code before.  5 stars!! It was a lot fun trying to get the rhythm right.  Also, your UI communicated very well the inputs the player is doing so they can practice and perfect the rhythm.  Awesome job!  Please check out my entry if you can~ Good day.

Developer

The UI was the first thing I made for myself, then I liked it so much I kept it in! Thank you for trying it!

Really unique and cool idea. It took me a little while to figure out that the directions were based on the local direction of the person (instead of global up, down, etc). Still, definitely one of my favorites from this jam!

Developer

Thank you!

This will probably be in the  top 20 video. Seriously, this is so cool, fun, and original! I just loved it. I had to get used to the controls and how long a dot and dash should be, but I think the only thing that bothered me were the left, right and back controls - it was a bit unintuitive that you automatically move, in my opinion there should only be left and right, and executing them only rotates the character. Still, great game!

Developer

Thank you! I agree with the heading. I think as other people had said, more early levels with basic movement would have lessened the confusion. Then again, I still go the wrong direction when facing down

Even though I lack patience for this type of game I have to say that I am really impressed by the design, implementation and idea. This game is definitely great and I wish I had the personality to go through it all! :D Maybe one day I'll come back for more.

Developer

Thank you! The nature of the movement is definitively slow, thank you for trying it!

Submitted(+1)

Your game is actually making me learn some morse, and hell, that's something!
Apart from that, let's see: we have very blatant adherence to the theme, clever design, great execution. Yep, that's a full score!

Developer (1 edit)

I'm so happy so many comments say people are learning and enjoying learning morse code! Thank you so much!

Is the .p8 available anywhere?

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?pid=66363#p Here you go...This version has the credits edited to credit my wife's contribution (she had the idea of movement being based on heading)

Great idea! After a while muscle memory kicks in and controls become less cumbersome. Replaying a level after wrong move, when you already know the solution, is very tedious, so adding a reverse action command would be nice.

Developer

Thanks! That sounds like a great idea, I think I will add that for the post jam version

Developer

Since you mention muscle memory, something I felt while making/playing this game was the potential for a morse code rhythm game xD... Just a wild idea I guess

Submitted(+1)

Of course, it is a bit tedious, but it's a great idea and executed very well!! Nice to see that other people had the idea for morse-based controls as well :D

Developer

Thank you so much!

Submitted(+1)

Very well done! Awesome to see some Pico-8 submissions in this jam.

Developer

Thank you. There is a Pico8 community post and the Pico8 forum also has a number of submissions from this jam, you should definitively give those a try as well!

This really fits the theme! Good job! Never thought I'd use morse code to control a game! Really cool mechanic! I wonder if there would be any way to speed it up at all? Either way, great submission!

Developer

Thank you! I started slow because I figured it would be a hard mechanic to get used to but I really like the idea of a game where you get info using morse code or the info you receive is morse code so that it could be a bit faster.

Submitted(+1)

Yessss! You could make some cool mechanics where you have to decode some messages!

Submitted(+1)

Combining the idea of a one button game with writting morse code is brilliant!

The controls are on the tedious side, but it sure is creative!

Developer

Thank you!

Submitted(+1)

A little bit tedious to play but it sure is an original idea and executed as well as I can imagine!

Developer

Thanks!

What a great game! Had so much fun (though at first it was a little confusing)

Developer

Thank you!

Love the idea, and the use of pico 8 is just great haha
