Interesting idea! I included it in my GMTK Game Jam 2019 compilation video series, if you’d like to take a look. :) https://youtu.be/P5BMwIOWTEc
Thanks again for checking it out, great video! :D
Hey there, I played your game in this video at around 24:20 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig6dOEJRIUM
Awesome! Thanks so much for playing my game :D
It's so much different seeing someone actually play your game, compared to reading what people have to say about it. Your video was really insightful, like I really should've just called them "checkpoints" instead of "spawner", that probably confused a couple people too :p
An original idea, but the controls are not too confotable. Good job anyway a really nice and fresh concept imo! ^w^
Glad that you liked the concept! But I agree, there was some weirdness with the controls. It's the first platformer I've made so it's probabaly not the best character controller in the world haha :p
Cool game, it has some Potensh :)
The mechanics (and the color choice) reminds me of Porttal 2, which is nice !
The controls could be improved, two things for instance:
- You've kept friction on platform edges
- The gun sometimes don't apply color where you shoot, it would have been easier to just kept pressing the fire button and having the color spread around (although it is a lot harder to code give you that)
Great job :)
Haha, thanks! :D
- This is the first platformer I've created so didn't know about getting rid of friction so that the interaction with the platform edge wouldn't be so sticky. I checked it out and it was a quick fix, so really appreciate that!
- If you mean a hold down to just continuously shoot a stream of bullets, then it shouldn't be too hard to implement actually and I can check out how that feels. But if you mean one bullet spreads out, then that could be a little tricky and getting that to feel good might be hard since it's a bit of multitasking for the player
Lovely little unique game! There isn't much to relate it to the theme other then you can only use one colour at a time, perhaps you could've made it so you can do more of one thing at a time, like throughout the levels slowly equip one more colour with a different ability but you can only have that ability through the level (Although that would make level design a lot harder) - The game somewhat reminds me of Splatoon too! I love the originality of this game and I would love for it to be further developed and become a full game, I can totally see this game coming out on the Nintendo Switch. About the controls, it's sort of hard to switch between colours, so like what @SunJane said, I feel like using the mouse wheel to switch between colours would be better, another thing which confused me was the beginning, I was confused on what I had to do and why I wasn't shooting, or shooting anything at all, until I changed the colour. So maybe a small tutorial could help. And another thing! I think you could make some really unique puzzles with this if the colours stay as they are instead of changing when the player changes it! (- Amy)
I tried to tutorialize the color usage by putting some text on the ground like "Use [2] for jump", "Use [3] for speed", but with the other things you said, there was definitely things I couldve done to make the game better especially game design-wise since the puzzles were extremely basic. It was basically a minute long tutorial haha. It was my first game jam so hopefully I can use this experience to do better things for the next one I join. Thanks for the feedback! :)
Very interesting mechanics. I probably lacked only a quick color switch (mouse wheel as a change of weapons). And rhythmic music)
And so, very cool!
Thank you! I never really liked the weapon switching using the mouse wheel in games to be honest so didn't even consider this, but it's the default in most games so I guess a lot of people must really like it haha. I'll try to see what I can do about this, if a future build happens
Nice work for your first jam! It's really good looking and quite satisfying to control.
The only thing that i found frustrating is that you can't use the numbers on your numeric keypad. Next time, be sure to use both the keycodes "Alpha#" and "Keypad#". ;-)
That seems like it would be an pretty easy fix, I'll look into it thanks :)
Cool mechanic! Reminds me of the Portal 2 gels and what not! You could make some really cool puzzles based around switching between colors! Cool game!
I really liked that section in Portal 2, totally going to
steal some ideasgrab inspiration from that game 👀Really cool idea! It reminds me of the goo in Portal 2. I love the mechanic, but I do agree with some other commenters that saying "Jump!" on the hill is super misleading. The only reason I got past that section was because I somehow accidentally double-jumped... Lastly, the "???" idea for the green goo seemed cool, but I got stuck on the huge wall and I didn't see any effect from the green goo. So it could be a good idea to explain what the goo does at some point.
Yeah, I might need to change that ramp section haha. Wait so you got stuck at the tall wall section? The green blobs should've done something to that wall (no visual feedback for it though) ;)
Such a shame it is so short and unpolished. To be fairly honest this is so far the best idea on jam I have seen. It is original and has a lot of potential. I hope you work on it a bit more :)
Oh wow, thanks for the really kind words! Some of these posts are making me want to dedicate another day or two to see if I can make this game work out :D
If you work on this more or make another similar game, try to be more careful about your word usage. Telling the player "Jump!" when you just a little while before used that same word for a specific ability, and especially with that word on screen, makes it very misleading if the player is supposed to just do a plain jump with extra speed.
Haha, now that you mention it, I can see that being confusing now. Appreciate the heads up on that
Taken on it's own, I like the concept as a game.
My one criticism is that from a Game Jam perspective the use of "Only One" color feels more like a hindrance to the game than an asset. I think the most interesting potential for puzzles would stem from using multiple colors at a time, or even combining two colors to make new colors. Just my two cents.
If you keep developing this you could end up with something great!
Now that you mention it, that sounds like it would be really awesome! It would definitely make the visuals a little more appeal too, since right now it looks really plain. I'll take this into consideration, thanks for the feedback :D
Constantly shooting the ground in front of me to zoom across the map made me feel like I had found an exploit until the little speech bubbles popped up. I also liked the green colour's effect.
It did remind me of portal 2 quite a bit which is awesome. With a little polish and more puzzles I think you'd have a fantastic game that people would purchase.
Thanks for the kind words! :)
I might pursue this game in the future, I think I see a glimmer of hope, it's just that there are so many quality 2D puzzle platformers on the market it's hard to justify spending time away from my main side project :p
Good concept, reminds me of Portal. Now, just add like a 1000 more levels and you are good to go! :D
Maybe in the future haha, not sure if I'm going to go forward with this game
Couldn't get past the big ramp. :( But cool concept and was really fun! 4/5, 5/5, 5/5!
Oh wow thanks so much :D
With the ramp, you just have to go really fast
As others said, with a bit more work this can become a cool puzzle/platformer. The speech bubbles give life to your character :) Good job for the jam ! (PS: Other controls would have been great for non-qwerty layouts, I couldn't play with arrow keys as you need 1-2-3 to change color)
Thanks, glad you liked it! I might spend a day or something trying to work out the kinks, and then see where I want to go from there. :)
Given a little more polish for the camera and how the colors work together, this would be a very fun platformer. I got some nice Portal 2 vibes from this.
Yeah, I think the game needs a good clean up to be more presentable, I'm hearing a lot of critic about the camera. The Portal 2 inspiration is 100% there haha
Pretty cool concept, would love to play some more challenging levels, like having to use the red one to get really fast and switching to the blue, doing some super jumps. Good job mate!
I actually did want to add a super jump ramp somewhere in the level! But didnt have enough time to test out the interaction that happens when an immediate color switch occurs :(
And I might pursue this game a little more in the future, not 100% sure yet :p
Short and sweet, indeed like a tutorial level but I feel it fits the scope here to show what you did. The small text parts in between were really nice, obvious yet not too hand-holding.
Thanks, appreciate it :D
This was pretty cool, would be interesting to see it developed further as a concept. The blue for the jump gun reminded me of portal! It could have done with being a little longer, but hey there's only so much that can be done in 48 hours.
Portal 2 was definitely the main inspiration of the game. I might decide on continuing it in the future, but I've been working on my larger side project for over a year and don't want to spend too much time on a side project to my side project lol
