I really enjoyed the concept! Racing snails and the plane mode had me grinning from ear to ear, and I liked how the big snail destroyed the environment as it rolled through! Kudos for a wonderfully whimsical idea and presentation. The game is quite difficult, and I feel that having some power up or item that temporarily boosted your speed would add a lot of depth. That way, you could afford to slow down slightly if you hit a blade of grass and not immediately die. It would also add depth in that you'd be actively trying to reach it instead of just avoiding obstacles, playing into the idea of risk/reward. That said, your first game jam game was much better than my first, and you should be very proud of how this came out :)

Developer

Awww, thanks so much for the feedback and encouragement!! I definitely agree that the game could benefit from some quirky power-ups, and I'm really glad you liked the art!!

If you add a leaderboard for the death counter, I will be in first place. This counter has reached a value in a very short time that I can never reach with the score counter in my whole life. The game is cute but it could benefit from making it easier first (less obstacles, lower evil snail speed, etc) then ramping up the difficulty as time goes on. To reward hardcore players, you could add stars or coins in some locations that increase the score so that newbies can ignore them and focus on surviving while hardcore players would seek to both collect the coins and outrun the evil snail. Overall, good work.

Developer

Yeah, one of the things I wanted to implement was a secret path through the top of the screen or something, but I didn't have the chance. And I definitely would've made it easier if I'd thought about it. :/ Also, the score just increases whenever you pass an obstacle so it can only ever go up to 11. Thanks for your feedback!!!

Very cute game, with cool sound! I like snail transformations a lot

Developer

Thanks! I've been getting a lot of comments saying they like the snail's gliding form! ;)

Great game with  a lot of charm. I really like your art style and the variety of obstacles. The fast restarts are great too as it took me a bit to time my flying nicely.

Developer

Thanks! The retry option was a pretty last-minute addition, so I'm glad it was helpful! And I can't take credit for the amazing art, that was all CapnStache. ;)

It's transformers but a snail in disguise ! It took me a while to figure out that's salt on the ground but I like the whole concept of it, there's potential to make a bigger game with more snail puns ~

Developer(+1)

Haha thanks for playing!! I'll get escar-going with those snail puns! ;)

I snailed it! This game is really cute, and the one button idea means it would be good both for accessibility reasons, and it would work great on a touch screen. It's quite short but I love the personality the character has.

Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :D

Cute endless runner game. You did good!

Developer

Thanks! Even though it's not *technically* endless, I'm really glad you liked it!

The aerosnail thing made me really laugh, but unfortunately the difficulty boot was a bit steep and I found it frustrating a lot sooner than I would've preferred.

I find myself saying this a lot this jam, but this would be a good mobile game with some polish, and you could impart more of a feeling of speed by parallaxing the background so that it moves to the left faster than the foreground does. Would be interesting to see what you do with it. :)

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Sorry you had trouble with it. :/ I got a suggestion earlier that easing into the difficulty would help, and I definitely think that would solve the problem. Also, I did try a parallax effect, but I'd never done it before so I didn't think it looked great. Thanks for the feedback, though!

EDIT: I'm starting to realize I'm not great at judging difficulty... I didn't do a ton of playtesting with other people because every time I played it I thought it was too easy. Guess it's more important than I thought to have others test the game!

I love how the snail turns into an airplane :D

I think the game starts a bit too difficult. I would like to get a feel for the game with some easier obstacles before I get thrown into the more difficult obstacles.

Developer

Thanks! I can't believe I didn't think of that! That is an awesome idea, thanks for the feedback!!

Submitted(+1)

Love it! it's cuuuute :D

Developer

Thanks!! I didn't actually do the art (my partner did), but I agree that it looks amazing!

Such a cute little game! I love the art and the audio, great work on that! :D The idea is cool, but not that original as I have seen a lot of games similar to the submitted to the jam. But it's still nice and I really like how you incorporated it into the snail theme. Overall I had a really fun time playing your game! Good job! :D

Also thank you very much for playing my game as well :)

Developer

No problem! I appreciate your feedback, and I'm glad you liked the game!! :)

You're very welcome! :)

I snailed it! Cool little game, took me a little to figure out but fun when I snailed it down. I don't fully understand why the score timer is needed, since it's not endless, but I did enjoy it all around. Nice work!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I originally put the score timer in because I was bored and it felt productive, then I never actually got rid of it...  I'm really glad you had fun though!

Submitted(+1)

Very nice! I wish there was some indicator as for when the glide was about to end as I had a bit of trouble with controlling that (you slow down to a stop when you hit the ground, is this intentional?)

Developer

Yeah, I'm beginning to realize that a visible glide timer would've probably helped... I created all the glide stuff at like midnight, so it wasn't the most polished... :/ And as for the slowing down, that was not intentional, but it happened when I added the glide-snail sprite change (near the end of the jam) and I had so many other things to take care of that I couldn't fix it. I wish I'd been able to fix the slowing down part, but I'm glad you still liked the game. :)

Submitted(+1)

It's still a very nice game! Polish is usually not very achievable while participating in a game jam.

Submitted(+1)

Really fun! And the snail is really cute.

You could make it endless, but then it would lose the ONLY ONE LEVEL.

I will admit I saw the snailure screen many, many times.

Developer

Oh yes, that's DEFINITELY why I didn't make it endless! It's not because I don't know how or anything... Heh...

Submitted(+1)

Yeah... I actually didn't think about how you could do that.

Well, if you have an obstacle class with a type variable, you could use 3 obstacle objects and change their place to be in front of the player every couple of seconds and then change their type randomly. But then you have to do many, many thing to make it work, like maybe making the amount of obstacles go up as you get better, and that just introduces more and more problems. Yeah. It's just a bad idea for a game jam, I think.

Submitted(+1)

Fun when it works, if there was a telegraph or visual cue telling you that the glide is going to stop, that would save from a few cheap deaths when learning how long the glide lasts.

Nice work

Developer(+1)

Thanks! If there had been some more time I definitely would've added a timer or something for the glide. Good to know for next time, I guess!

Submitted(+1)

I'm a snailure :(

But for real, it was a pretty nice, simple and sweet kind of game :)

Developer

Aw, sorry. I'm glad you liked it though!! Maybe if you give it another try, you can SNAIL it? ;)

Submitted(+1)

Made me think of a more fun, snail version of the Chrome T-Rex game. I would have greatly appreciated it if I could control my glide duration like I can my jump height.

Developer

Haha thanks! I can see what you mean with the gliding. I wish I'd had time to explain that you can only glide for a few seconds before automatically falling. And it was kind of funny that as I was working I was going for "Flappy Bird but there's ground" even though that's basically just the T-Rex game! ;)

Thanks for the feedback! Sorry you died unfairly. I had some trouble getting the speeds to line up so that wouldn't happen. I hope you still enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

Pretty nice. Mechanically it works fairly well, if tricky to get the timing right.
Took me more deaths than I'd care to realise there was salt on the ground though ^^;

Developer

Thanks! The salt was originally more see-through, so I'm glad we changed it!

(+1)

The controls are a bit sluggish, it seems to need a heavy press of the space and it needs very precise timing to achieve the jumps. I do love the art, the aeroplane wings on the snails are very cute.
Also you have your viewport set to the wrong size so the words etc are off the edge of the page and you can't see the floor unless in fullscreen.

Developer

Thanks for the feedback! I just fixed the viewport, so hopefully that helps a bit. I haven't used itch.io before this so there was a bit of a learning curve...
