Fishing for scale and building armor is an amazing idea! Nice concept!

Developer

Thank you! Thanks to the crazy-8 ideation method, we had over 20 ideas to pick from, and we were really split on which to use. In the end we chose that one, because there was a game loop with two very distict activities, which sounded fun.

Did you try out the updated version? It's much more enjoyable because it's a lot less hard to stay in business! https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024
In any case, glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted(+1)

nice entry, realy neet Artworks !

A fishing game is rare,  so it's realy cool to see it in here !

The first iteration was chalanging (but I'm a fan of FPS so managed to have 3 on the 4th, but hell, it was hard, had to restart when I understood that purple ones are not to clic xD)

The second one was nice too !

Hoped to have a loop between  shop and fishing (and Game over when you ran out of money  maybe ?)

But Hey its a JAM, and you did a realy good job !

Developer(+1)

Thanks for all your words! I can only repeat myself from all the other comments: My teammate says "thanks", he did all the art, and we know about the difficulty of the fishing minigame, it's being our downfall so far. We've linked a patched version below the game, maybe you've seen it? It makes the fishing a lot simpler, maybe you want to give it a try! It really makes the game a lot more fun, since you don't have to lose on round one every time: https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

Anyways, thanks a lot for playing!

Submitted(+1)

Pretty cool game! Very distinct art style.

Submitted(+1)

Looks like a very good game with nice artstyle. The original minigame is indeed a bit too hard.  The updated one is better in terms of difficulty (tho still a bit too hard, but not too much).  Reminds me of old flash game Jacksmith and Sort the court.

Developer

Thank you! You wouldn't believe it, but you're the first person to actually give us feedback about the second iteration of the minigame, it is way more useful and great to hear then you'd think <3

Something else you wouldn't believe (or actually, maybe you would, considering this is a game jam and procrastination hits hard), we were literally working on making at least the game loop functional in the last 30 minutes of the jam and pressed upload five seconds before the deadline ended ;-)

So we are definitely happy we got a functioning game out on the other end, that is fun to play and at least the economy part fairy balanced, without ever play testing the full game. We've definitely learned a couple of things in this one once more.

Again, thanks so much for playing! We're happy you had fun with it.

Submitted(+1)

Classic main game loop procrastination (completely not me who was polishing other aspects of the game and not doing it). Also the assembling armor part is really nice looking and using materials based on appearance of characters is very smart mechanics.

Submitted(+1)

Great idea ! Bad luck the minigame is too hard on the first iteration, but you got it ;) Really nice art work also !

Developer

Your the first to actually give feedback on the improved minigame, thank you very much for that! I also feel like it's a lot more enjoyable with these changes. Glad you had fun!

Submitted(+1)

Such a fun concept, and I loved the art :) I found the fishing to be a little frustrating but overall I really enjoyed it

Developer(+1)

If that's the only thing that bothered you, feel free to check out the improved minigame in this patched version: https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

We adjusted timings, speeds and hitboxes to make it more enjoyable. Thanks for playing!

Developer

Feel free to share your fav armor pieces you constructed in the comments as well!

Submitted(+1)

Wow, really nice art work, well done!

Developer(+1)

My teammate says "thank you!", he did all the art, and I have to agree, it looks so nice.

Submitted(+1)

Lovely art style, and funny characters. When we were discussing game concepts in my team we had the idea of a "game where you built with scales" but we scrapped the idea, super fun to see someone else think of that too!

Gameplay-wise, it can be very punishing to get started. A bad customer you can't satisfy with your starting scales combined with failing one fish spelled game over for me several times :(

Overall great concept though

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you! Characters and art were all my teammate, so he definitely says "thanks!".
We realized that the fishing minigame is way too hard way past the deadline. We created a patch for that, but can't change the online game any more (obviously). If you want to try it still, here's it! https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

Submitted(+1)

Very nice art. I likked the fishing minigame but sometimes it felt really punisching.  Also I really liked the caracter that wanted cheap stuff. Cool that you can combine different scale to build armor. Nice game :)

Developer

Yes! That was our favourite part too, and for that reason, in the patched version (https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024), there is a keyboard cheatcode "giveall" that gives you 7 of each scale when you enter it, essentially allowing you to make any armor your want. That version also makes the fishing more enjoyable!

(that guy with the round face, I don't know how my teammate came up with him though, but he's a pretty fun character though)

Submitted(+1)

Such a clever idea with great and unique characters and art! As you've already noted, the fishing is a bit tricky and I kept finding myself in encounters where I didn't have enough scales to help the customers. I ran it back several times to keep getting new customers and more scales still, nice job!

Developer

Thank you! As I reply to all of you kind people, you are absolutely right about the fishing. I'll skip all the explanation and give you a direct link to a fixed version of the minigame, in case you would want to try again! https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

Submitted(+1)

Wow, what a unique spin on the theme! This might just be the most literal interpretation! I share the views of others regarding the fishing game. Never the less, the game is very enjoyable! Great work.

Developer

Yep, that fishing minigame is definetly the downfall of an otherwise pretty cool game (what I feel like). We've patched the minigame to be easier and less janky in the meantime, but we are not allowed to list it as an official link (according to the rules), which is kinda sad, since we only tweaked a few numbers, but that made such a big difference. If you want, you can always try it though! https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

Love how you can mix and match scales to create many different beautiful armors.

Developer

Yes! Especially later on, when you have a wide variety of scales to pick from, you can make some really pretty ones.
For that reason, in the patched version, there is a keyboard cheatcode "giveall" that gives you 7 of each scale when you enter it, essentially allowing you to make any armor your want. If you really want, you can give it a try! https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

We're really happy though that you enjoyed it! We definitely had a lot of fun making it.

Developer (4 edits)

We know that the fishing minigame is hard and might seem janky - but believe us, it's possible!
We've already created a version of the game that fixes this issue, but the rules do not allow linking such fixed copies. How sad.

Submitted(+1)

Great you fixed it and I do understand the urge to fix things up, be careful though, it's technically against the rules to link to other version and might disqualify you.  Good luck

Developer (1 edit)

Really, is it? I didn't know that. But you're right, I just looked at the rules. I'll remove the link then.

Do you think something like this would still be acceptable? We really want to share what our vision could have been...

Submitted(+1)

Cool concept and nice interpretation of the theme, I just wish the fishing minigame was less clunky lol

Developer(+1)

Hi there! Thank you for your feedback. We've uploaded a new version of the game a few hours ago, available via the link in the description, aiming to fix a few of the issues the minigame had. Did you play that version or the original one? If you played the updated one, if you allow the question, what bothered you specifically? In any case, thanks again!

Submitted(+1)

I played the original one

Submitted(+1)

First of all, WOW I really love this concept and the game is so much fun!! It's so creative - building armor with scales. The gameplay would have been really enhanced if there was audio, but the art already speaks for itself. I came for the art style. Also, this is so my type of game. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any fish haha so I could only build the default armor over and over (because I thought even that part was fun). If you have any tips on how to do the fishing, please let me know!

Developer(+1)

Wow! Thank you, you really put all the points that mattered to us into words. You've also pointed out the difficulty of the fishing minigame, which is completely justified; it's a way to hard for someone who didn't practice it for 5 hours during development (me).

https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024
If you want to give it another chance, you can check out this updated version, with larger/slower bubbles, but in any case, we're very glad you enjoyed it!

Submitted

Yes please!!! Definitely checking this out :D

Submitted(+1)

Cool entry. The art is really good! I had some technical problems on my higher resolution monitor which seemed to make my cursor not grab objects correctly which made the fishing mini game extremely hard.

Developer

Hi there! Thank you for playing our game and your feedback!

The fishing minigame is a problem zone for other people as well, it seems. We've revised the difficulty of it in an updated version (https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024) and found out that if you play in F11, it works a lot better!

Submitted(+1)

I loved the artstyle. It's very impressive of how much of the art you've done in just 98 hours. I Also loved the main mechanic of fishing for scales, even if is very unforgivable sometimes.

Developer

Thank you! My teammate really put in a lot of hours over the four day making all the art. Humbly said, it's by far the best entry we've both produced so far, in our opinion, and the art is a big part of that.

The fishing minigame seems too hard, and we agree with all of you commentors. So, we've updated the game and made it a little easiser, if you want to give it another try! https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024

Great art. Absolutely fantastic job with the art.

The tutorial had great pacing, that's pretty rare.

I was confused how the fishing worked, and I failed the game in the tutorial. Is it like animal crossing fishing? Did I miss a visual clue somewhere?

Combing a shop game with a fishing game is a good design, I could see it being fleshed out to include other types of armor and maybe weapons.

I don't hear any audio. I think some basic audio and music would really make this pop.

Developer

Thank you! My teammate says "thanks", since he made all the art (a lot of art, my god)!
About the tutorial, I realized that instead of having floating text, I could have several clients teach you about the game, which seems to have worked great!
There is no audio btw, we didn't have time, knowing very well how much it elevates gameplay.

The fishing is way too hard, we agree. That's why we put out an updated version of the game, which aims to make it a little easier: https://yanwittmann.de/game/GMTK2024/gmtk2024
If you want, you can give it another try!

In any case, thank you so much for playing our game!
