How did you make the caves? Blender?

Really wish there was a tutorial explaining how the gem cutting works and stuff, because it took me around 15 minutes of trial and error to figure it out, but once i did the game was very fun

Such a unique concept and solid experience! I watch Vikfro play it on his stream, but I was really surprised at how great the graphics were when I played it for myself. I can't imagine the work that went into making the actual gem cutting part of the game work. Unbelievable! 5/5 :-)

this game is very original, the cutting system works really nice, and is actually interesting, even though i didn't understand what the "make another cut" button does, and i figured out the rotation after about seven orders,  so i think the game could use some tutorial. i really wanna see it grow as a big steam game. One suggestion would be to make an inventory/storage system, so you could grab a bunch of gems in one go, and store them somewhere at the house, then go into mines again, once you run out of that. But that's just a suggestion!

Developer

make another cut does exactly that: it “applies” the cut and then the resulting stone is used as input for a second cut, instead of the original rough. This way you can make more complex cuts - e.g. if you make a square cut, each face are 90 degrees of each other, then in the second cut you rotate 45 degrees and make small faces in the corners

The gem cut vas very nice touch and mechanic

This was a cool concept, the gem cutting was a neat element unlike any other game I’ve played. I liked the music, though a more smooth transition between the outdoor and underground music might have been nice. The UI was a bit wonky, and at some point I think I had the mouse captured, but menu button focused, so pressing space to jump would toggle the menu. Overall, nice work and use of the theme!

Amazingly original as always! I really like the vibe in the cave, and would have been happy doing other things in there for the entire game. :) I did get stuck (as others have mentioned) and can provide a screenshot if you need it for debugging.

I struggled with the gem cutting interface. Managed to get 2 gems correctly fitted, and other times I thought I was on track but it didn't work. Perhaps I've gone in with zero gem cutting knowledge, and that doesn't help. For instance, I didn't see the need to use any other angle other than "top" and structure the bottom of my cut accordingly... I suppose I could have fancier / more varied parts of the gems if I did...

Apart from that, super original and still enjoyable, congrats on another great submission!

Developer

yes please, would love to check the screenshot!

No worries! I also had an issue where the settings button had focus so was opening/closing when I pushed space (that's why it's open in the screenshot).. I don't think that was the issue thought. :)

Wow i dont know how you made this game in 8 days! it was amazing! nice job!

As I've said, your games are always a treat because of how original they are. This one is no exception; no other game this jam has had me identifying gems and then cutting them to fit a setting. Perhaps it could involve having something more to do (or perhaps being part of something larger), but that's beyond what you can reasonably do within a jam.

absolutely beautiful jam game! very good! i'll agree that it felt difficult to get it right. maybe a tutorial could've helped. oh, and the only tiny other thing, to me, is the change of music / ambiance is quite abrupt, and i kept failing my cuts, so having to run in and out the mine a lot.

but beyond that, i loved it! am very impressed that this was made in only 9 days! i sucked at it, but at least i could seize the means!

also, not to brag, but i won the special mode, almost instantly! ;D

Quite an original game, nice use of CSG! I guess I learned to identify gems x). But honestly I did not get to the end of the game (if there is one). I managed to have two successful gem cuts but failed all the others. I just find the gem cutting system very hard to use and it got me quite frustrated and after 20 minutes I simply abandoned. I guess I'm not cut out for this :p

Developer

Thanks for trying! Maybe a tutorial on this would be a good feature

there is no end for now, it just keeps going on and on

It was great and relaxing, although it was pretty hard to see in caves and you can get stuck in some spots too. Though can I ask how do you cut the gems? I would always get the error of the container hitting the bottom and not cutting the gem.

Thanks for playing!

It could be two things: either the bottom part is too pointy so it hits the bottom before the girdle (side) is in place, or the gem is too small and pass through the holding points without touching them.

Regardless of setting shape, you should make the gem respecting the expected size, with some 1mm tolerance max (less tolerance for smaller gems)

What a superb game! A real gem! xD

Congrats for the effort, it was worth it!

Just a question... Is my impression or I could run out of gems?

Developer

Hey, thanks for playing!

Yes, you can exhaust the mine, and the reason you can turn down clients is for when they are asking for gems you no longer have.

The game wouldn’t be endless, it ends when the mine exhaust, but I didn’t have time to implement game over screens with different endings, unfortunately :(
