Thanks for making and sharing this game! I enjoyed playing this game and really liked that there was dialogue and interesting mechanics with the essence. I had a hard time with the enemies (specifically the machine guns) because though their visual particles would collide with things on the landscape the shots would still register no matter if I was hiding behind a pillar or the ship so there was no way to take cover or evade once the machine guns got triggered.
I really enjoyed the visuals, audio, and all around vibe of the game. Was definitely fun to play!
Thank you for playing my game and for the awesome feedback! If I end up working on the game more in the future I'll 100% add the collisions between the cannons' shots and the environment. I left it out for the game jam because it was causing issues with it not hitting the player correctly, so I disabled most collisions for that enemy except for with the player as a last minute fix.
There are a few things that confused me. At first I didn't think that the button could be shot multiple times, so I went to the edge of the map and the machine gun shot me down with ease. And then when I realized that you can earn currency on the waves, then on the 4th or 3rd wave a machine gun spawned near me and shot almost all my HP and I died, hoping that there was a checkpoint. Unfortunately there was no checkpoint :D
But other than that it was fun to play. There was even lore with dialogue. Visually, the game is a bit reminiscent of Zen from the first Half-life. Good job!
You have good point, I should have mentioned that it can be shot multiple times, thanks for the advice! I may look into checkpoints too, and maybe have a checkpoint / no checkpoint mode that you choose when you start. Xen from half-life is exactly what I was inspired from! That is the first thing I thought of when I was thinking of designs for my game, although I ended up going for more of a mars look than Xen. Thank you for playing!
Nice game, I have rated it..
Hope you would rate my game too.
Thank you! I'll have to check it out soon!
I have no idea how to beat the guards so wasn't able to progress at all. One thing that'd help is some sort of indication that damage is happening to them, feedback upon hitting them, that kinda thing. Hard to be motivated to keep trying when it's hard to tell if you're actually doing the right thing. I really liked the art and vibe and would love to explore more though! Music was great too :)
I'm sorry to hear that! Adding damage indication on enemies would definitely be a good addition for that reason, thank you for the advice. The guards take 15 hits to kill so I can definitely see how it could be unclear without indication you are damaging it. I'm glad that you still enjoyed some other parts of the game!
That was a session of frantic shooting & running π in an alien environment.
Gameplay
Nice shooter. It was a good and bold attempt to make everything depend on essence. By the way, the guards were super strong. And I died many times because of them and the enemies. I am probably not a good quake and unreal player π . By the way, had expected the pillars to protect me but the guards shot right through them. Maybe an option for in the future that you have some kind of cover. Some more variety in the enemies would have been a nice added bonus as well. Also maybe some more weapon variety. The alien explaining is a nice touch.
Graphics
Kudos for what I think are all homemade assets and style. It really gave an alien planet vibe. Also nice distinct weapon design. The opening screen was also nice and relaxed tone. Some extra particle effects for the weapon would be nice in an update. Or maybe some lights and beams or electric visual effect.
Audio
Sound can really enhance the atmosphere in a game and it did so here for the alien atmosphere. Sound effects were decent too.
Theme
You can enhance your spaceship and yourself, but some more influence on the gameplay would have been nice.
Devlog
Is present and that is always OK π. And this one is good and comprehensive and enjoyable to read what the problems were and how you handled things in making the game. Insightful.
Overall a job well done πͺ. Fun game to play (bit difficult for me but that is not a negative). Keep up that good work.
PS: Minor tip: give your executable a nice icon instead of the default Unity one π
Thank you for the feedback, it's really helpful to me! Like you said, some more visual effects and enemy types would definitely be good to add in the future, and fixing the guards being able to shoot through the pillars would definitely be a good thing to change. Also thanks for the tip, I definitely should have changed the icon lol.
This game was very fun! I got heavy Doom vibes as I was playing this.
Below, I will post my ratings for each category and my reasonings behind each rating I can be detailed with my feedback
Gameplay/Fun (5 Stars) - Honestly didn't see anything wrong with the gameplay design. I like the idea of tying your HP to your ammunition so you have to balance between spending essence to heal, waiting to kill the turrets until you have essence or risk killing yourself, etc. The design of the enemy types could've been a bit more varied. Both just shoot a projectile or beam, but for what it was they were still very well done.
Graphics/Art (4 Stars) - The low-res graphics really added to the theme of a deserted planet and the floating enemies and Deserted NPC are both creepy and add to that further.
Audio (4 Stars) - The music tracks sounding similar but more hyped up really let the player know the difficulty is ramping up. That and the SFX in general were all well placed and added to the game.
Theme (3 Star) - This game does fit the theme but the theme doesn't play much of a role in terms of game design. The only direct enhancement you feel as the player is the ability to shoot faster, but because you can't waste ammo freely or risk spending HP as ammunition, so the upgrade feels very risky to invest into. Enhancing the ship is the core plot device but, again, this has no bearing on gameplay itself.
Devlog (4 Star) - I liked the attention to detail, especially adding some insights into the methods behind many in-game actions.
Altogether a really solid game that I'd love to see get expanded on. This could sell well!
I really appreciate the valuable feedback! I'm glad you enjoyed my game! I may end up expanding on it in the future, as I had a lot of fun making it and I think it could turn out pretty cool as a full game. Also looking back, I probably should have made the theme have more of an impact on the game like you said.
Like to se a shotter over here x3, really nice game and game play, the graphic remember me to half life e.e, the gameplay to serious sam XD. was really funny, those laser beans are insane to destroy and hard to repair the ship e.e XD
Love it the game, a really good
Thanks! Half-Life was one of my inspirations when I decided on graphics for the game.
