Thank you for the feedback and kind words 😊.
Nice to see a fellow space story enthousiast and glad you got and liked the atmosphere 😊!
Next time I will try to optimize the HDRP cutscene better or use URP to make it visible to lesser computer power. I did a little bit of culling and such, but I needed to have done more or add settings or so. Luckily I added the MP4 😅
Good tip for the extra zoom-in on the sun. That would have made it more clear indeed I think also.
That wondering of what that fate would be and how it would turn out...would maybe be a nice game concept for a future game... 😊
Thanks again and I am happy you enjoyed the scenery!
Cool black-and-white hand-drawn styled cutscene.
The cutscene looked artistically impressive. Combined with the calm, somber music, it created a melancholic atmosphere, which I think was the intention for this scene. The shots and visuals effectively depicted the story (even if it was just a few shots) of playing chess with the devil and time running out to escape alive. At the end, I was still expecting something more to happen, but it simply transitioned into a lingering final shot. Also not bad of course, but I wanted more ;-)!
All in all, a beautifully stylized cutscene.
In this cutscene, you could truly feel the despair. This was well conveyed through both the visuals and the audio. The style is minimalist but well-executed and effective. The audio also plays a key role in setting the ambiance of the scene, with the heartbeat you briefly hear, signaling the rising tension and urgency of the character’s situation. The subtle visual and textual hints make you think about what has happened and what might come next after the scene. It could work very well in a game as cutscene between parts.
Perhaps the text was a bit too quickly at times, making it harder to fully take in the visuals alongside the dialogue. However, I understand that with the time limit and the short duration of the jam, it was challenging to time everything perfectly.
All in all, a beautifully dramatic and somber cutscene for our jam. Well done!
Nice little cinematic cutscene story with a twist at the end.
The music does a great job of creating a dramatic ambiance, and the visuals of everything going wrong add to the sense of despair—you can really feel the hopelessness. The clock ticking also enhanced that.
Visually, it’s also well-polished and pleasing to watch.
The twist at the end completed the whole thing pretty nicely
Overall this is a cool entry for our cutscene jam. Well done!
First of all, it was cool to see this artistic style, which gave the cutscene an unique identity. Cool dithering indeed.
Secondly, this cutscene could easily fit into a Wing Commander-style game as the start of an important mission, with music that gets you hyped for the action. Perhaps the music could start even earlier to give it some more build up.
A whole game in this style...would love to see it.
Definitely a strong cutscene entry for our jam. Well done!
This cutscene does a great job of showing how Dick Storm is killing time until midnight. The large clock on screen combined with snapshots of what Dick is doing works very well.
The 2D elements within the 3D world create a unique style. The animations are well done, and the detail of the smartphone light on Dick’s face shows that the designer is attentive to details.
The rising tension as midnight approaches, with the camera work and the turning cross, is effectively conveyed. I’d love to jump straight into a Doom-like shooter with Dick Storm after this cutscene. Would have loved to see some demon peeking or a glimpse of hell behind the door. But this end keeps us curious.
All in all, a great cutscene with a thrilling build-up—hopefully, we’ll see more of this in a future game ;-)!
PS: The BBC tip was a fun bonus too—I didn’t know that either. :-)
The slow-moving clock, ticking, swelling sound, and zooming in made this cutscene a beautifully dramatic one, with a fantastic demon scream at the end to bring it all to a conclusion. Would have loved to see a scary demon also or blood splatter or..
It’s a pity the clock didn’t line up exactly with 6:66, but that’s just a minor detail. ;-)
A nice second cutscene as well!
Nice "destructive" cutscene :-)!
The dust cloud rolling in at the end was nicely done, and I could see the effects & missiles, which looked great. Visual was good. Perhaps the clock moves a bit too fast—a slower ticking clock might add more impact to the drama unfolding. Sounds added to the ambiance.
A solid entry for our jam!
It’s great that you created all the art yourself, and the art was coherent and clear enough to follow the story. The (depressed) mood of boredom and wasting time was conveyed very well. The crumpling paper effect at the end was a nice touch. It might have been even more impactful if it lasted a bit longer to emphasize the passage of time, but even as it is, it worked well.
A solid entry for this cutscene jam. Keep up the good work!
Fun cutscene with humor.
The humor was definitely well done in this cutscene at the end. The part where the sound cuts out and then comes back with the explosion was a nice touch. The music fit well with the 8-bit pixel art style. A big "boom" sound would have been awesome for the explosion. Perhaps the color palette could have been more unified or limited to one specific tone to make it more stylistic, but it still looked well.
The characters were a bit small, but you could still recognize their movements, like checking their watch, which was well done. The story itself was funny, so that’s great.
Overall it was a fun entry, and well done!
Nice finished cutscene!
I understand it was challenging to make the text run automatically while staying within the timing constraints. It’s clear that this was tricky. The text does move quite quickly now, making it harder to keep an eye on the rest of the cutscene. Luckily, I could watch it multiple times.
The rain and smoke effects make it feel dynamic. Perhaps the characters could have done a bit more, like changing their posture or showing something above their heads during the conversation. At times, they were looking off-screen for a while, and nothing happened except for the text changing.
The use of bright colors worked well to draw attention to the main focus, with darker tones towards the edges, which helped direct the viewer’s eyes to the characters. That worked effectively.
Adding a few more sound effects/audio music could enhance it even further—even something simple, like a typewriter sound as the letters appear, could be a great bonus.
Overall, this is a solid cutscene entry for our jam. Nice job!
Fortunately, my powerful desktop was able to handle the cutscene well😉 , despite it being quite heavy in terms of download and performance.
The voice acting definitely stood out in a positive way, and the visuals & animations in the scene looked great too. The camera work was well done, with different shots and a bit of movement to keep it dynamic. I think I understood the story, but it could have been brought out a bit more clearly, especially regarding the clock and its influence on the narrative.
I understand that you used free models, but as someone else mentioned, one of them did stand out 😅 and seemed to fit less in the scene. But it was not a problem.
Overall, a good cutscene entry and well done!

🎮 GoedWare Game Jam #13
Our classic jam returns with another thrilling theme for developers of all levels!
Yes, I know 😅😅...!
First time using Unity 6 and HDRP. I thought that would be good for the visuals.
It is good for the visual/lighting etc., but heavy on the GPU and I should optimize indeed for a next time. Did not have any time left to try to squeeze something more out of this one.
Did try to activate the Dynamic Scaling and STP in Unity, but I do not know whether I have succeeded in that either😅
Could also be something else that causes the heavy load by the way. Something to try to find out and learn for next scenes/games.
Thanks for watching and the feedback. Hope you still liked the mini space odyssey 😊!?
Thank you and yes, the camera was not as smooth as I wanted it to be and did not have any time left to try to locate and fix.
It is indeed bit jumpy at moments...😅
First time Unity (6) HDRP so maybe I could have optimized it for better framerate and more smooth and is HDRP a bit too heavy without any optimizing. Could also be some other problem that causes the jerkiness...but was fun to try HDRP in Unity for a change instead of URP.
Also first time using Timeline. I think you did too. Nice tool, cool to use it for this jam and learn what it can do. Probably a lot more than I did, but still... 😊
Thanks for watching and the feedback😊!
We will provide a specific color palette consisting of 4–8 colors, defined by exact hex codes. White and/or black may be included in the palette, depending on the final selection. If they are included, you’re free to use them creatively for outlines, shading, or highlights. If not, you’ll need to use the other palette colors creatively to achieve these design elements.
All visual elements in your game—including sprites, backgrounds, and UI—must use only the colors from the provided palette. Transparency is allowed, but only when applied to the palette colors.
We look forward to seeing how you bring your creativity to life within the constraints of the palette!

Here are some other possible options to implement "camera interaction" or demonstrate real-time rendering in a 2D cutscene:
1. Slight Parallax or Background Shift
- Shift the background or elements in the scene slightly in response to user input (e.g., arrow keys or mouse movement).
- This creates a subtle but effective indication of interactivity, mimicking camera movement in a way that works for 2D.
2. Scaling or Layer Movement
- Add a zoom-in or zoom-out effect triggered by a key press, or slightly move a foreground or background layer to create a parallax effect.
- This interaction stays non-intrusive while demonstrating real-time rendering.
3. Transparency Toggles
- Allow the player to make specific sprites or layers transparent or toggle their visibility by pressing a key.
- This method provides an obvious but simple cue of interactivity.
4. Dynamic Scene Adjustments
- Enable small changes to the scene, such as turning an effect (e.g., glow or lighting) on or off, or repositioning an object slightly with a key press.
- These adjustments confirm real-time rendering while allowing the cinematic experience to remain uninterrupted.
Parallax Backgrounds
- If the style allows, you can include parallax backgrounds to create a sense of depth. However, this may not fit every cutscene.
And of course any other option you can think of to proof it is real-time rendered and not pre-rendered.
We will also add a field during submission where the participants can fill in how they proof it is real-time rendered:
Proof of Real-Time Rendering
Describe how your cutscene demonstrates real-time rendering. If you implemented minimal camera controls (e.g., subtle panning or rotation), specify the controls used. If you employed another method, detail your approach to confirm the cutscene is rendered in real time.
This information will help us verify the authenticity of real-time rendering in your submission.
We will also include a field where participants can explain how they ensure we can verify the cutscene is not pre-rendered.
The explanation doesn't need to look polished or visually appealing—it’s solely for verification purposes. Once the verification is complete, the cutscene will be judged solely on its storytelling and cinematic qualities, without consideration of the verification method.
